Manchester United's Reserves started the pre-season campaign with a 1-0 friendly defeat at Bray Wanderers.

Warren Joyce took a large squad to Ireland for the fixture and made 10 changes to the team at half time but saw Jake Kelly score the only goal of the game on 42 minutes.

Philly Hughes had an early header wide before the Reds made a impression with Bebe's shot blocked. Josh Harrop tested Stephen McGuinness with a couple of stinging efforts but Bray broke the deadlock when Kelly latched onto a pass by Ismahil Akinade to drill past Joel Castro Pereira.

Only captain Tom Thorpe kept his place for the second half and Joe Rothwell, Saidy Janko and Angelo Henriquez all mustered attempts as the Reds sought an equaliser. The closest Joyce's side came to restoring parity was when Tom Lawrence's fine drive produced an outstanding save out of Shane Redmond.

Manchester United's Reserves were held to a goalless draw by Southport with Angelo Henriquez going closest to breaking the deadlock.

Warren Joyce again utilised a large squad, as he did at Bray Wanderers on Sunday, with James Wilson starting in attack against the Conference Premier outfit. The crowd of 675 at the Merseyrail Community Stadium may not have seen any goals but there was no doubting the commitment in a feisty encounter.

Wilson, Davide Petrucci and Tom Thorpe all mustered efforts in the first period before Joyce rang the changes with nine substitutions. Although there was only booking, for Luke George, there could have been more as the midfield area became increasingly combative.

Chile international Henriquez, who was joined by Ashley Fletcher in attack, could have stolen victory on 80 minutes but was thwarted by Dean Porter in the home goal.

Manchester United’s Reserves claimed their first win of the pre-season and embroidered the victory with five goals at the J. Davidson Stadium.

Altrincham, who were promoted to the Conference Premier at last season’s close, celebrated the opening of their new away dressing room before the kick-off with United’s Nicky Butt cutting the ribbon.

Both teams took a little while to get into their stride but then, in a matter of minutes, there were attempts on goal at either end. Saidy Janko fired wide for United before, shortly afterwards, James Lawrie had the home fans on their feet with a long-range effort that skimmed Joel Pereira’s crossbar.

United, without a goal in two previous pre-season outings against Bray Wanderers in Ireland and at Southport, finally ended that shortcoming in the 28th minute when James Wilson employed all his predatory instincts to force the ball home from close range after meeting Andreas Pereira’s cross.

The Reds were beginning to express themselves and it came as no surprise when Italian midfielder David Petrucci’s 25-yard thunderbolt increased the lead.

After the break, United moved up a gear after and three further goals completed an excellent evening’s work for Warren Joyce’s lads. Petrucci claimed his second with a cheeky chip over David Parton after the ball squirmed out of the keeper's grasp.

Paddy McNair added a fourth with a glancing header from an Andreas Pereira assist and Callum Evans, on for the injured Angelo Henriquez, scored in similar circumstances by nodding in a late fifth.*

The next scheduled assignment for the second-string team is at Barnsley next Tuesday.

Kasihan Petrucci dan Thorpe. Petrucci tahun ini dah 23 tahun tapi sih main aja di level U-21. Klo emang mo dipinjamin lagi mending dijual aja buat perkembangan karir dia. Thorpe juga sama. Meski katanya highly rated tapi kok sih minim kesempatan. Jangan2 overrated. :nohope:

Manchester United's Reserves produced an accomplished and clinical performance to triumph 2-1 against Barnsley in front of 3,385 fans at Oakwell.

Josh Harrop scored both of his side's goals in the first half on a pleasant summer's evening in South Yorkshire but a third successive clean sheet during the pre-season was denied by Jean-Yves M'Voto's late consolation.

Sam Winnall bent a shot off target as the Tykes began brightly but United, wearing the new white shirt, went ahead in the 11th minute. A stray pass by Conor Hourihane was pounced upon by Harrop, who advanced towards goal and unleashed a stunning shot into the far corner of Adam Davies' net.

The home side attempted to reply with Winnall hitting the target with a full-blooded volley, that was gathered by Joel Castro Pereira, and a Brad Abbott shot which deflected wide. Tom Thorpe was forced into a superb diving header to clear as the Reds defended stoutly and started to emerge as a threat at the other end again.

Referee Jon Moss played an advantage when Tom Lawrence was cynically brought down but Andreas Pereira was unable to beat Davies from a tight angle with no options available in the middle. A second goal did duly arrive on 32 minutes when Harrop played a slick one-two with Lawrence and buried another sweet finish past Davies.

Marcus Haber had a shot beaten away by Joel Pereira from the restart and the trialist headed down for Winnall to hook over from close range soon afterwards. The final effort of the half came when Nana Boakye-Yiadom, at full stretch, again failed to hit the target.

After the break, Winnall robbed Thorpe but the skipper recovered to toe the ball back to Joel Pereira as Haber looked to get a shot away. Harrop left the field to generous applause from both sets of supporters while James Wilson was introduced at the expense of Andreas Pereira.

Although Marnick Vermijl fired straight at Davies and Winnall placed a shot too close to Joel Pereira, the chances started to dry up. Reuben Noble-Lazarus tried his luck from long range with a couple of powerful drives that flew over the bar but United struggled to carve out any more openings despite the arrival of substitute James Wilson.

Donald Love made a brief appearance but pulled up when trying to reach a Wilson pass and was replaced by Sean Goss. In the closing stages, Joel Pereira kept out Rose and Dominic Hale but was powerless to prevent M'voto reducing the arrears with two minutes remaining with an instinctive finish past the keeper's despairing dive.

Manchester Senior Cup final preview


The Manchester Senior Cup is up for grabs when United face City at Hyde FC's Ewen Fields on Thursday night.

The Reds have won the competition 27 times with Warren Joyce's side lifting the trophy for the past three seasons. Qualification was actually secured for the final way back in September 2013 with Adnan Januzaj and Wilfried Zaha among the scorers in a 4-0 win against Bolton Wanderers.

After missing out on silverware last term when being beaten by Chelsea in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League final, the Reserves will be determined to come out on top in the local affair against City's Elite Development Squad.

United looked in good shape when defeating Barnsley 2-1 in a final pre-season friendly with midfielder Josh Harrop scoring both goals.

"It's been a bit of a gap," explained Warren Joyce to MUTV. "We would maybe have liked another game in between but we have to prepare in training and look forward to the City game."

Angelo Henriquez missed the Oakwell victory due to injury and Donald Love could be a doubt as he made only a brief appearance before being withdrawn soon after entering the fray as a second-half substitute.

"Donald has had one or two problems in pre-season," explained Joyce. "He's not really got back as he was injured for a long time last year and has not really done the same work as the other lads. He's not been able to train day in and day out like the others have done and is still recovering from the back end of last season."

Joyce utilised his full squad in the friendlies but is likely to field a strong side for the final with Tom Thorpe impressing as captain and Joe Rothwell and Ben Pearson working well in tandem in midfield. James Wilson came off the bench at Barnsley and will be an option to start as he looks to build on an outstanding 2013/14.

There is the possibility that several of the younger charges who were in the United States for Tour 2014 promoted by Aon could feature depending on manager Louis van Gaal's plans ahead of the Valencia friendly at Old Trafford next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, right-sided star Saidy Janko feels it is always imperative to triumph in the derby.

"I think it’s an important game," he stressed. "We need to win – for ourselves and the club as well."

Manchester United teenager James Wilson reminded Louis van Gaal of his huge potential by hitting all four goals in a 4-1 win over rivals Manchester City in the Manchester Senior Cup Final on Thursday night.

Wilson scored twice on his Premier League debut against Hull City last season under interim manager Ryan Giggs but wasn't taken by Van Gaal on the club's recent pre-season tour of America.

But in front of watching City manager Manuel Pellegrini, Wilson turned the Senior Cup final in Hyde on its head with clinical finishing in each half after United had fallen behind.

Patrick Vieira's City youngsters took the lead in front of an impressive crowd of 3,261 when Andy Cole's son Devante set up Jordi Hiwula to score.

But after that it was the Wilson show.

He levelled on the stroke of half-time and then twice breached the City defence to score early in the second half

His first dunked a finish past goalkeeper Angus Gunn, son of former Norwich City No 1 Bryan, and then side footed for his hat-trick. He added a fourth late on.

Wilson, 18, is tipped to be the next United youngster after Adnan Januzaj to emerge from the club's famed youth ranks and follow in the footsteps of The Busby Babes and Class of '92.

Van Gaal will probably consider sending Wilson on loan to The Championship or League One to gain competitive first-team experience.

It was the 28th time United had lifted the Senior Cup and it means the club have won two trophies in Van Gaal's first three weeks at the club.
