EARLY UNITED TEAM NEWS FOR SEVILLA CLASH

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed he is dealing with a number of injury issues ahead of the Champions League tie at Sevilla.

The manager made changes to his squad for the Emirates FA Cup win at Huddersfield Town on Saturday but says it was not down to resting players.

"I didn’t rest anyone other than [David] De Gea," he stressed. "Can we recover some of them for Wednesday? I think [Marcus] Rashford, [Ander] Herrera, [Antonio] Valencia have a chance.

"Paul Pogba? I don’t know. [Marcos] Rojo, [Phil] Jones, [Marouane] Fellaini, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], I don’t think they have any chance."

The news that Rojo and Jones are injured means Eric Bailly's return to fitness – he came on as a substitute in the dying embers of the clash at the John Smith's Stadium at the weekend – has been a timely one.

Rashford and Herrera have missed the last couple of games but Valencia featured in the last Premier League outing, at Newcastle United.

Jose is likely to provide further team news in Seville on Tuesday when previewing the round-of-16 tie.

Re: [UCL] Sevilla vs Manchester United

'This is where we belong': Manchester United must make being in Champions League knockout stages a regular occurrence again according to captain Michael Carrick ahead of Sevilla tie

* Manchester United face Sevilla away in the Champions League on Wednesday
* United will play their first game in the last-16 of the competition for four years
* Michael Carrick believes United belong in the tournament's knockout stages
* Carrick was part of the United side that won the Champions League in 2008

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick admits the knockout stage of the Champions League is the minimum standard for the club.

United face their first game in the last-16 of the competition in four years with a trip to Sevilla on Wednesday.

Having been a regular in the latter stages of the Champions League prior to that Carrick stressed the players must strive to reach that level again.

'It's what we should expect of ourselves - to be at this stage of the Champions League,' he told MUTV.

'That's not being blase, it's just that should be our standard. We should be in this competition and fighting in the later stages most years.

'This is where we belong and, however this year pans out, this has to be the standard year in, year out.

Manchester United face Sevilla on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League tie

'A few years ago, it was relentless. Every season we had some massive games and we tended to do really well in them and it became quite normal.

'That's what we need to get back to, these games feeling quite routine.'

Carrick is set to retire at the end of the season to join United's coaching staff and is determined to make the most of his last run in the competition.

'For me, it's probably going to be my last few months as a player and that, in itself, creates a different feeling,' added the 36-year-old, who won the Champions League in 2008 and was a losing finalist in 2009 and 2011.

'Towards the end of your career, the bigger games in the league, the cup and certainly in the Champions League, you don't take them for granted.'

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PREVIEW: SEVILLA V UNITED

Setting the scene: European football makes a welcome return as the Reds are back in UEFA Champions League action on Wednesday night with a trip to Spain to face five-times Europa League winners Sevilla in the round-of-16 first leg. It’s our first appearance in the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition for four years and, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake, Jose Mourinho men’s will be keen to record a positive result at the 42,500-capacity Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford on 13 March.

How have we been doing? The Reds have generally been in good form of late, recording seven wins from nine games in all competitions in 2018 after Saturday’s 2-0 win at Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup, which set up a last-eight tie at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. It promises to be a much tougher test in Seville for United during a crucial week, which concludes with a key Premier League clash against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, but one which the Reds will undoubtedly relish on the European stage.

How can I watch it? Wednesday’s tie kicks off at 19:45 GMT and will be broadcast live on BT Sport in the UK. MUTV subscribers will be able to watch build-up from 17:45 GMT on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game before watching it in full at midnight. You can also follow the action as it happens via ManUtd.com’s live match blog and @ManUtd on Twitter.

What’s the team news? Jose Mourinho is dealing with a number of injury issues ahead of the game and says he expects to be without Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford have a chance of being fit. Eric Bailly could make his 50th appearance for the club after returning from three months out with an ankle injury as a late substitute against Huddersfield. The boss could give a further update on his squad in Tuesday’s pre-match press conference.

How have both sides reached this stage? The Reds finished top of Group A, which consisted of Basel, CSKA Moscow and Benfica, after winning five of our six matches – with the only dropped points coming in the 1-0 defeat in Switzerland on matchday five. Meanwhile, Sevilla were runners-up in Group E but enjoyed a positive campaign, picking up nine points. They drew twice with group winners Liverpool, including coming from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at home, and their only defeat was a surprise 5-1 thrashing at Spartak Moscow.

Who is Sevilla’s manager? Just a month after being sacked by AC Milan, Vincenzo Montella only took charge of the Spanish club at the end of December. The Italian replaced Eduardo Berizzo – who was sacked a week earlier, after returning to the club following cancer surgery, as a result of a poor run of form. A prolific goalscorer in his successful 28-year playing career, the former Roma striker had a brief spell in the Premier League with Fulham, where he scored twice in 10 outings in 2006/07, and has six years of managerial experience in his homeland with several clubs, including Fiorentina and Sampdoria.

How are Sevilla doing? The Andalusian side, who won the Europa League in three successive seasons prior to the Reds’ triumph last term, have endured an up-and-down season, but their form has improved since the turn of the year. They currently sit fifth in La Liga, six points behind Real Madrid who occupy the final Champions League qualification place, and have reached the Copa del Rey final, where they will face Barcelona in April. Montella’s men also come into the game on the back of three straight wins in all competitions, after beating Las Palmas 2-1 away from home on Saturday. Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan has been a fortress this season, with Sevilla’s only home defeat in all competitions a 5-3 loss against fierce rivals Real Betis on 6 January.

One to watch: After a season away with Inter Milan, Ever Banega returned to Sevilla last summer and quickly found his feet again. A tactically intelligent and versatile playmaker, the 29-year-old has long been admired by some of Europe’s top clubs and has been part of Argentina’s squad for a decade. Capable of dictating the tempo and creating chances for his team-mates, the experienced midfield maestro has chipped in with a number of goals and assists across all competitions this season and will be key to attempting to unlock the Reds defence.

What’s our record like in Spain? The Reds have generally struggled on Spanish soil, winning just two of our previous 23 games on European excursions. But United have fared well in the country in recent times, suffering just one defeat in the last eight visits and were victorious on our previous trip to Spain in May last year as Marcus Rashford’s free-kick gave the Reds a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final first leg.

What they said: One man who is looking forward to the Seville trip is Juan Mata, who will be back in his homeland where he spent four years with Valencia before moving to England in 2011. “I’m especially excited about playing in my country again, at the Sanchez Pizjuan, a major stadium where the local team always gets big support,” he wrote in his latest blog. “I hope we see a great football game and we get a good score for the second leg at Old Trafford, in front of our crowd.”

Did you know? Wednesday’s game will be United’s 50th match against Spanish teams overall in European competition. The Reds’ record so far stands at 13 wins, 20 draws and 16 defeats. It’s also our first competitive meeting with Sevilla, who become the club’s 220th official opponents all told.

Who’s the referee? Clement Turpin will lead a French team of officials who will take charge of the midweek game. The 35-year-old will oversee his first United game but handled Sevilla’s 2-1 win over Leicester City at this stage of the competition a year ago and their play-off first-leg victory over Istanbul Basaksehir by the same scoreline back in August.

Rivals Watch: After four ties were played last week, there are four more last-16 games taking place this week. Here’s the fixture list:

Tuesday 20 February
Bayern Munich v Besiktas
Chelsea v Barcelona

Wednesday 21 February
Sevilla v Manchester United
Shakhtar Donetsk v Roma

All games will be kick off at 19:45 GMT.

Re: [UCL] Sevilla vs Manchester United

PROFILE : THE LOWDOWN ON SEVILLA

It’s been a long wait for Manchester United to return to action on the European stage, but UEFA Champions League football is finally upon us this week.

The Reds face a tough assignment against five-times Europa League winners Sevilla in the Round of 16 and travel to Spain for the first leg, which takes place on Wednesday night.

The club’s official magazine Inside United enlisted the help of Spanish football expert Andy Brassell to get the lowdown on our La Liga opponents from Andalucia, who will then travel to Old Trafford for the second leg on 13 March.

Here’s everything you need to know about Sevilla…

WHAT IS SEVILLA’S HISTORY?
Formed in 1890, Sevilla are Spain’s oldest club just dedicated to football, rather than being a multisports entity such as Barcelona or Real Madrid, and Andalucia’s most successful club – having won 13 major trophies and four second-tier titles but their only La Liga triumph came in 1946. After spending three seasons in the second tier at the end of the 1990s, the team found stability under the five-year tenure of locally born coach Joaquin Caparros before his successor Juande Ramos, who went on to manage Tottenham, created the team that brought Sevilla to Europe’s attention.

THE TEAM
It’s a time of profound change for Sevilla, who lost talented coach Jorge Sampaoli to Argentina and sporting director Monchi following 30 years of service with the club. As someone who represented the heart and soul of the club, Monchi left a legacy which has been taken on by his old right-hand man Oscar Arias. The club has built a versatile squad which boasts a better group of players than the one edged out by then-Premier League champions Leicester City at the same stage of the competition last year, with midfield maestro Ever Banega now back at the club after spending one season with Inter Milan. Typically set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation by coach Vincenzo Montella, who took over from Eduardo Berizzo in late December, the midfield pair of Steven N’Zonzi and Banega provide stability behind a dangerous attacking quartet now led by club record signing Luis Muriel.

THE EUROPEAN PEDIGREE
Despite progressing from a tough group featuring Juventus and Lyon to reach the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 last season, Sevilla are more typically associated with the Europa League, having won the trophy a record five times since 2006 (including its incarnation as the UEFA Cup). The first two of those triumphs, in 2006 and 2007, were achieved by one of the most celebrated sides in the club’s history. Coached by Juande Ramos and featuring the likes of Dani Alves, Luis Fabiano and the late Antonio Puerta, the club youth product who tragically died after collapsing during a match later in 2007. Unai Emery presided over the club’s glorious three-in-a-row in 2014, 2015 and 2016, for which the coach needs to be afforded an enormous amount of credit. In terms of the Champions League and the European Cup, this season is only the sixth time in the club’s history they have competed in the competition. Sevilla reached the quarter-finals in 1957/58 and the other five appearances have been in the Champions League era. Last season, they fell to Leicester City in the last 16 after losing 3-2 on aggregate, but didn’t progress from a group containing Manchester City and Juventus in 2015/16. They also made the last 16 in 2007/08 and 2009/10.

THE FANS

There are few more atmospheric footballing venues in Spain than Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. Also known as Nervion, after the district in which it’s located, it’s reassuringly old-fashioned, set in the middle of a built-up area and making it easy to recall memories of some of the biggest occasions its hosted – such as the 1982 World Cup semi-final between France and Germany, and the 1986 European Cup final in which Steaua Bucharest beat Terry Venables’ Barcelona on penalties. The magnificent façade, a mosaic incorporating club crests from all over the world and surrounding the club’s own badge, covers the front of the stadium on approach from the west side and hints at the experience waiting inside. At every home game, the whole stadium sings a rousing rendition of the club’s anthem Himno Centenario minutes before kick-off. Once the game starts, the club’s ultras, the Biris Norte group who congregate behind the goal at the north end of the stadium, keep the energy up. The group was formed in the 1970s and named after the Gambian forward Biri Biri – Alhaji Momodo Nije, the club’s first black player.

PREVIOUS AGAINST UNITED
The Reds have never played Sevilla in a competitive game before but have faced the Spanish side in a couple of friendlies at Old Trafford. United were beaten 3-1 in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial match in 2013, but ran out 3-0 winners against the then UEFA Cup holders in 2006 thanks to goals from Louis Saha, Cristiano Ronaldo and young substitute David Jones.

YOUNG BULLISH ABOUT EUROPEAN PROSPECTS

Ashley Young says Manchester United are in the Champions League to try to win it as the Reds prepare to face Sevilla in the last 16 on Wednesday.

The full-back is bullish about the club's chances of going all the way in the competition and lifting the coveted trophy for the first time since 2008.

"It's a massive week," Young told reporters. "We had to get ourselves back to winning ways [at Huddersfield Town] after last weekend [at Newcastle United]. We've got a tough game against Sevilla away and we've got to concentrate on that.

"We can't look too far ahead. Obviously, we know we have got Chelsea coming up and Sevilla is the next game and that's where our thoughts are.

"Can we win the Champions League? Of course. You don't enter a competition not to win it. That's what we will be looking to do and take each game as it comes. The next one is against Sevilla. We just have to concentrate on ourselves."

Young feels defenders come in for criticism but a 22nd clean sheet of the season at Huddersfield was more proof that the team is performing well in this area.

"It's fantastic," he added. "I think a lot has been said about defenders and what not - a lot was said last week [after Newcastle] - and it's one of those things. Everyone's entitled to their opinion.

"Keep getting clean sheets and, hopefully, we can chip in with goals as well as the front boys."

Romelu Lukaku took his goal tally to 21 this season with the double at the John Smith's Stadium and Young was quick to praise his team-mate.

"His hold-up play, his all-round game was fantastic and he's done that throughout the season," added the defender. "He's getting goals and to get two was brilliant for him. When you've got someone who can hold up the ball like he can, and get in the box, it's fantastic.

"You can see the combinations between him and Alexis Sanchez. Alexis comes inside and Rom's seen him and picked him up as well and they're picking each other out and they have worked well together so far."

Amiiinnnn, semoga United bisa mengeluarkan semua kemampuannya \:D/

UNITED SQUAD UPDATE FOR SEVILLA ENCOUNTER

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has explained that the players returning to his Champions League squad trained in front of the media on Tuesday before flying to Seville.

There was a change in the usual routine at the Aon Training Complex as the cameras were able to capture a later part of the session, with Paul Pogba, Antonio Valencia, Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera all present after missing the Emirates FA Cup victory at Huddersfield Town.

The quartet's availability is a boost ahead of the round-of-16 tie with Sevilla as the Reds seek a positive result ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford.

"We opened the training session today and I open in a period where we normally don't open," said the manager. "We normally do it in the warming up and the first simple drills of the training session. This time, we did it for quite a long time and in the last period so we could see players in a competitive situation.

"When a player is in that competitive situation, it's because the players are normally ready and without problems, so you could see in that training some people that didn't play against Huddersfield with problems - like Pogba, Valencia, Rashford and Herrera."

Ever Banega, Joaquin Correa and Luis Muriel are all fit and available for the hosts but Sebastian Corchia is rated doutful.

"I normally say that Champions League dreams start around the quarter-finals and not yet in the last 16," added the boss. "Last 16 still looks a long way to go. When a team reaches the quarter-finals, I think it's the moment where even the teams that are not favourites - which is our case - they start realising that anything is possible.

"But for the moment, I think we have to just focus on the very difficult opponent [Sevilla] and the first match of this two-legged knockout tie - a match that doesn't decide anything but is very important."

Re: [UCL] Sevilla vs Manchester United

It's time for Paul Pogba to get serious... Manchester United need midfielder to perform at his best against Sevilla

* Manchester United face Sevilla in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday
* United boss Jose Mourinho confirmed Paul Pogba is set for a return to action
* Pogba missed last weekend's FA Cup clash with Huddersfield due to illness
* He is under pressure to deliver having struggled for form in recent weeks

Paul Pogba is never likely to go unnoticed, but Manchester United's record signing landed in Seville yesterday under more scrutiny than at any time in his Old Trafford career.

The midfielder's swift return from the unspecified illness that kept him out of the FA Cup win over Huddersfield on Saturday has only added to the sense of intrigue surrounding his recent problems at United.

Despite blaming the player's loss of form for his decision to drop Pogba and substitute him twice over the course of three games, Jose Mourinho has tried to quell talk of a rift between the two men.

But the manager still faced more questions about the Frenchman and on Tuesday, at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, Pogba needs to start coming up with some answers.

He has not always produced performances befitting a player who cost £89million, certainly not in the bigger games.

A Champions League last 16 tie would be a good moment to do so. But Mourinho said: 'I don't even like the fact that the player who cost X millions doesn't have the same responsibility as the player who cost three times X. The responsibility is for everyone.

https://s9.postimg.org/ax6v6i5pb/496...Pogba_is_s.jpg
Jose Mourinho confirmed Paul Pogba is set to return to action against Sevilla on Wednesday. Mourinho, speaking on Tuesday, said it would be unfair to place too much expectation on him

'When I decide a team to play, I don't look to the age, the salary, the transfer fee, because that's also not fair.'

It appears that Pogba's ego has been pricked by the high-profile signing of Alexis Sanchez, hence his demands to play on the left of a three-man midfield.

Off the pitch, his behaviour — described as boisterous at best and childish at worst — continues to puzzle senior players who are not part of his clique with Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.

They cannot understand why Mourinho, a stickler for players taking responsibility, has not come down on Pogba harder. The elaborate hairstyles and handshakes begin to wear a little thin when performances on the pitch are not up to scratch.

https://s9.postimg.org/tpiqa3wyn/496..._media_ahe.jpg
The Portuguese refused to accept that United are favourites to go through or get carried away. Mourinho revealed it was when he made quarter-finals he believed he could win with Porto. Mourinho lost with Real Madrid at Sevilla but said he won't let history affect him too much

Still, no one doubts his ability, least of all Sevilla coach Vincenzo Montella who faced him enough times in Italy when Pogba was at Juventus.

'He is an incredible player, a complete player,' said Montella. The Italian may also have been joking when he said that Sevilla may have to 'kill Sanchez or knock him down' to subdue the Chile star, but United are expecting a difficult challenge.

Five-times winners of the Europa League since 2006, the Spaniards have never progressed beyond the last 16 of the Champions League before and went out to Leicester City at this stage a year ago.

Mourinho said: 'They can be nice and say we are favourites but that means absolutely nothing.

'Champions League dreams start around the quarter-finals, not the last 16. The quarter-final is the moment where even the teams that are not favourites, which is our case, realise anything is possible.'

JOSE FEELING CALM AND FOCUSED

Jose Mourinho says he is feeling calm about the first leg of Manchester United's last 16 Champions League tie against Sevilla, insisting it's only when you reach the quarter-finals of the competition that you can dare to dream about winning it.

The Reds face the La Liga side on Wednesday evening at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Seville, a stadium and city which holds good memories for Mourinho. It was here that the boss enjoyed UEFA Cup glory when his FC Porto side beat Celtic in the final and during his time at Real Madrid he claimed three victories over Sevilla on their own patch, two being 6-2 wins.

Mourinho is not expecting that kind of scoreline this time around, but says he and his players are focused on the job in hand and are determined to book a place in the last eight.

"I'm calm and I think it's the way to be," he told MUTV. "It’s an important match, the first half of a knockout match if you want to say that. It's important to be calm and to be ready for the dimension of the game, but controlling emotions because it’s a game where we have to be at the top of our level.

"It’s a really difficult stadium to play at because it’s a stadium where the fans love the knock-out competition. They are called a knockout team because they are normally very successful, in the domestic cups also and especially in the Europa League. The crowd plays the game, they don’t come here just to watch, they come here to play the game and put lots of pressure on the opponent and the referee’s decisions.

"I said before that any team which reaches the quarter-finals has a chance," he added. "I never thought I was going to win it with Inter or Porto before reaching the quarter-finals and it's when you reach the quarter finals that you have the feeling that anything can happen. Nothing will change, the dynamic is nothing will change. The normal tendencies of some clubs are in this moment more ready to win it. But I think when you reach the quarter-finals, that's when any team can feel that anything can happen. So I think this step from going to the last 16 to eight teams is always an important step."

Mourinho was asked about the comments from some Seville players in the lead up to the game that United are the favourites to go through in the tie, but Mourinho insists: "For me, the word 'favourite' or 'no favourite' means nothing.

"They have good defensive organisation, they defend with everybody. [Sevilla boss Vincenzo] Montella is Italian - Italian coaches know how to organise their teams very compact from the defensive point of view. I can see easily now the distances between the wingers and the full-backs are much shorter. The wingers drop back to compact with the full-backs - not like in England, because in England, some experts that never sit on the bench, they say wingers shouldn't defend and the midfield players should only attack. But that's only in England in this moment, with this generation of experts.

"With Sevilla I don't think it's possible to score many goals and I think the game is going to be really competitive because they can say what they want, they can be nice to us and say we are favourites. That means absolutely nothing. I think I prefer to say they have good players and a good team and a good mentality for the knockout matches. Sevilla is a club of cups, a club that likes and enjoys the Copa del Rey, enjoys the Europa League and now they have the chance to play in the biggest competition of all, so the motivation is obviously even bigger."

Recalling that previous triumph in Seville with Porto, Jose reflected: "I have to say the Uefa Cup success in 2003 meant a lot because it was the first time I was playing in a European competition with a very young team and a very inexperienced team. For us to reach that final and win meant a lot. I know I had big victories here against Sevilla but I also lost and honestly I'm not the kind of guy to be thinking that what happened had any influence. I just think that on Wednesday and in a few weeks at Old Trafford, the two teams are very balanced, I would say the same chances for both, but we want to try. We want to go with everything and we are confident that over two legs we can do it."

Another disappointing performance....parahhh,,2 match beruntun minim shot on target....depan ompong belakang lowong...Correa sm Muriel bebas bgd bombardir defence MU,,untung kipernya De Gea. Gmna mau juara UCL kalo mainnya ky gini...harus berubah di leg 2....main ofensif n menang.

REPORT: SEVILLA 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 0

Manchester United and Sevilla will meet at Old Trafford next month with everything to play for, following a tight and intense 0-0 draw in this UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg.

Vincenzo Montella’s team, currently fifth in La Liga, enjoyed a superior percentage of possession and created far more chances on the night, but they could not beat the astonishingly good David De Gea and that failure could be pivotal ahead of the teams facing off again on 13 March.

United, naturally, wanted an away goal to take back to Manchester, yet the Reds will be confident of victory in the second leg and progressing through to the quarter finals of Europe's top competition.

The Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan has earned a fearsome reputation due to Sevilla’s formidable record of only losing once since November 2016, but also because of a ferocious fan base that relishes every occasion, big or small. That was very much evident in the traditional pre-match ceremony, when the floodlights flashed on and off, while the crowd sang their club anthem with a level of conviction that has prompted some to describe this as the best atmosphere in Spain.

Those in Sevilla colours cheered an attempt at goal in just the fourth minute, when Luis Muriel’s ambitious shot from distance was expertly parried by Spain international De Gea, and 11 minutes later ex-Manchester City man Jesus Navas dragged another shot wide from a similar range.

Jose Mourinho had started the match with a three-man midfield that consisted of Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay and Ander Herrera, but his plan was disrupted in just the 17th minute when the latter went down to ground with an injury, before exiting the pitch to be replaced by Paul Pogba.

The manager may have been forced into another first-half change when Alexis Sanchez was booted to the ground moments later, following a terrible challenge from Steven N’Zonzi, but thankfully the no.7 escaped serious damage and the former Blackburn Rovers defender was rightly yellow carded.

United had two decent chances to score in the first half, when Romelu Lukaku shot off target and McTominay struck from 20 yards, but Sevilla shaded the opening 45 after a flurry of late chances that required De Gea to emphasise his status as the world no.1. Back in his homeland, he twice denied shots from Argentinian Joaquin Correa, before parrying powerful close-range headers from N’Zonzi and Muriel over the bar on the stroke of half-time in a remarkable display, prompting two white-shirted opponents to congratulate him en route to the dressing rooms for the interval.

Sevilla began the second half in the ascendancy, by peppering a series of speculative shots from range that did not trouble the in-form De Gea, but United slowly eased into the restart and began to control more of the ball, particularly up the left flank where Alexis was working hard and with pace. The Chilean was perhaps our most dangerous forward, on his Champions League debut for the club.

Profligacy was becoming the word of the night for the hosts and their missed attempts continued to rack up after the hour, most evidently when Clement Lenglet weakly headed at De Gea from six yards, prior to the lively Correa striking off target from the edge of the penalty area moments later.

Pogba, playing on the left of the midfield three, as part of a 4-3-3 formation, sent a shot of his own wide from 25 yards as United looked for a precious away goal in Seville while the clock ticked on. To aid that bid, Mourinho introduced the pace of Anthony Martial and fit-again Marcus Rashford, who scored a famous winner in Spain during last season’s Europa League semi-final first leg at Celta Vigo.

The Reds had the ball in the back of the net, too, on 83 minutes, when Lukaku spun his marker inside the penalty area and shot past goalkeeper Sergio Rico, seemingly completing a perfect smash-and-grab outing, until the referee blew his whistle for an apparent handball from the Belgian striker.

Perhaps smelling an opportunity, and possible tiredness, Jose’s men pushed forward again and an intricate pass from Pogba led to Rashford bending a left-footed shot wide from inside the box. The Academy graduate then blasted a thunderous free-kick just a yard off target a moment after.

Alas, the goal never came and the teams will reconvene at the Theatre of Dreams in March, with a place in the Champions League quarter-finals well and truly up for grabs.

MOURINHO REACTS TO SEVILLA STALEMATE

Jose Mourinho feels there’s everything to play for in the second leg after Manchester United’s stalemate against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Reds were held to a goalless draw in southern Spain in the last-16 first leg but were thankful to heroics from goalkeeper David De Gea in the first half to keep an important clean sheet.

It leaves the tie finely balanced heading into the return fixture at Old Trafford on Tuesday 13 March.

Read what the boss had to say in his post-match interview with BT Sport and in his post-match press conference…

ON THE RESULT AND PERFORMANCE
“I think the only moment where we felt relieved was in the last couple of minutes in the first half, when there were a couple of our mistakes in possession and they had a couple of good situations with two David great saves and that gave this fantastic stadium the emotion that normally they have for 90 minutes. Apart from that, I was never relieved. The game was even. The stats are what it is. Sometimes you have 15 shots, but 13 of them were what I call 'statistic shots', so I really feel that the result reflects what the game was. You ask me, ‘is it a good result?’. I say, it’s not good, it’s not bad. We have two legs to play and we have one match to decide everything at Old Trafford. For sure, Old Trafford misses knockout Champions League. Yes, last season we had Europa League knockout, which obviously is not the same. In previous years, I think we were out in the group phase, so I think Old Trafford is a big Champions League night we want to have.”

OLD TRAFFORD MISSES BIG EUROPEAN NIGHTS
“If we draw with goals in the second leg, we are out. If we win, we are through. It’s difficult. I believe that Old Trafford misses a big European night. We had the quarter-finals and semi-finals last year but the Europa League has a different meaning.”

POGBA GAVE US STABILITY
“I think Paul made a big effort to try to give the team what I ask the team. I started with Ander and Scott. I think a fantastic player like Banega is, he wasn’t, because he didn’t have the space to be the Banega that the world of football admires and Paul replaced Ander. He tried to bring to the game the same kind of qualities plus his security with the ball. Of course, he lost a couple of possessions, but he gave us also stability. We had a good percentage of possession for the way we play and the match away at home against a good team like Sevilla; we had a good percentage of the ball and that means control of the game. I think Paul had responsibilities on that and I am also happy with Matic. I think the three midfield players, they had good control and Paul was part of it.”

PRAISE FOR MCTOMINAY
“In the press conference, the questions were about Paul [Pogba] but the question should be about the kid. He was fantastic. He did everything well. He put pressure on Ever Banega and stopped him playing, he's their playmaker. I think Scott was brilliant. The midfield started really well and Paul made a big effort to go into the dynamic when he came on and he had a positive performance. He looked a senior player, he looked a player with great maturity, with tactical sense, with a sense of responsibility, good in possession, good in the pressing. I think Scott McTominay looked a man with dozens and dozens of matches in the Champions League, when this is only the second one.”

DE GEA ‘IS WHAT HE IS’
“I think the clean sheets are because of the team and because of David [De Gea]. But, we also kept a few clean sheets with [Sergio] Romero in goal, so I think the team even with a couple of mistakes, the team defended well and when we made the mistakes, obviously David was there. And that’s the reason why he is what he is.”

OPINIONS: REACTION TO DRAW AT SEVILLA

ManUtd.com has gathered a selection of post-match quotes from the players and manager Jose Mourinho following Manchester United’s goalless draw against Sevilla on Wednesday night.

The UEFA Champions League last-16 tie is finely poised heading into the second leg at Old Trafford next month after the first-leg stalemate at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Mourinho, David De Gea, Chris Smalling, Scott McTominay and Victor Lindelof all spoke to MUTV and BT Sport after the game and we have summarised their key points below.

Jose Mourinho: “I think the only moment where we felt relieved was in the last couple of minutes in the first half, when there were a couple of our mistakes in possession and they had a couple of good situations with two David great saves and that gave this fantastic stadium the emotion that normally they have for 90 minutes. Apart from that, I was never relieved. The game was even. The stats are what it is. Sometimes you have 15 shots, but 13 of them were what I call “statistic shots”, so I really feel that the result reflects what the game was. You ask me, ‘is it a good result?’. I say, it’s not good, it’s not bad. We have two legs to play and we have one match to decide everything at Old Trafford.”

Chris Smalling: “It opened up in the second half and obviously in the last five minutes of the first half, David made a couple of good saves but other than that they didn't really have many clear-cut chances and it's in our hands at home - you have to win at home to go through anyway. The atmosphere was very good here, you can tell it was emotional and we had to dig in at times. I think the game plan was executed as the manager wanted. I think they tired in the second half in the last 20 minutes when we applied pressure. It was very open in the second half but it's a result which means we're confident at home.”

David De Gea: “It was a good moment and a good save, of course, especially because of the moment in the game - the last minute of the first half. It was important we didn't concede a goal. We defended well. I think they had control of the game, but the result is open.”

Victor Lindelof: “Of course we wanted to score a goal. We didn't manage to do that tonight. Right now we have to rest a little bit and we can look at the game again to see where we could have done better. It's an important week for us - now we have to go back to Manchester, relax and recover because we have another important game [against Chelsea on Sunday]. It's going to be a tough game [in the second leg] but we'll be playing at home with our fans behind us and we're looking forward to that game.”

Scott McTominay: “Obviously nerves are natural, it’s how you deal with those nerves and once you go out there, you just forget about it. It’s a game of football on a pitch that you played on before, you just take from there and want to play your game. It’s a difficult place to come, Sevilla; the fans and all the players are going to be up for it when Manchester United are in town and it’s a difficult night. You have to concentrate and focus. I thought it was a good performance from the whole team, everybody played well and that’s the main thing going back to Old Trafford.”

View from the opposing dug-out –
Sevilla boss Vincenzo Montella: “We had to win, and because of this, we are disappointed for the fans that have been incredible tonight. It has been a great night that could have been even better, but it's all to play for now.”

View from Twitter – @ReginaldRosario: “Two positives tonight: McTominay and De Gea. McTominay held his own and didn’t look out of place. Had #MUFC ’s only shot on target as well. De Gea. Out of this world. The only reason we aren’t a goal behind heading into the second leg.”

Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United - PLAYER RATINGS: David de Gea produces world class display while Romelu Lukaku has night to forget

* Sevilla were held to a 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Wednesday night
* David de Gea was brilliant as United gained advantage in Champions League tie
* Romelu Lukaku barely found a man all night up front for Jose Mourinho's side
* The second leg of the last-16 tie takes place on March 13 at Old Trafford

David de Gea performed brilliantly to ensure Manchester United held Sevilla to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night.

The goalkeeper's stunning game has given United a slender advantage going into the second-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Sportsmail's JACK GAUGHAN has rated the performances from the players on both sides at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Wednesday night...

Manchester United (4-3-3)

David De Gea – 9

Even congratulated by Sevilla players after two fabulous reflex saves before half-time – the second genuine world class.

https://s9.postimg.org/me5ayaoin/497...9249679965.jpg
The Spanish goalkeeper produced a world-class reflex save just before half-time

Antonio Valencia – 5.5

Really struggled with the wily Joaquin Correa and unusually decided to back off too much.

Chris Smalling – 6.5

Does the basics well, won his headers and produced a couple of handy blocks. Could do more in possession.

Victor Lindelof – 6.5

One very hairy moment derived from miscommunication but acquitting himself fairly well against Sevilla's runners.

Ashley Young – 6

Industrious going forward and offered very little help going the other way because of United's set-up.

Ander Herrera – 6.5

The one man early on who was directing things before his night was cut short through injury.

Nemanja Matic – 7

His sloppiness on the ball should not overshadow some good work he did off it in breaking up play.

https://s9.postimg.org/5dmepoocv/497...9249958027.jpg
United right back Antonio Valencia struggled coming up against Sevilla's Joaquin Correa

Scott McTominay – 6

Didn't embarrass himself – never does – and that, at the moment, is all United can ask of the 21-year-old.

Juan Mata – 5.5

Not enough ingenuity from United's attacking players and Mata was as culpable as the rest.

Romelu Lukaku – 5

How anyone can become that isolated in a 4-3-3 is a mystery. Barely found a man all night.

Alexis Sanchez - 6

Dropped deeper and deeper to try and affect the game, leaving Lukaku to fend for himself.

Subs

Paul Pogba (for Herrera, 17) – 6

Grew into the game as it progressed. Hadn't looked himself before half-time.

Marcus Rashford (for Sanchez, 75) – 7

Made a positive impact on the match but wasn't given enough time.

Anthony Martial (for Mata, 80) - 7

Similarly to Rashford, looked up for this.

Manager: Jose Mourinho – 5

These are not bad players but United looked in a constant state of confusion.
