United lifted the Lancashire Senior Cup, for the 14th time, following this resounding victory against Accrington Stanley at the Lancashire County Ground, Leyland.

The scoreline suggests a one-sided contest, but Stanley contributed greatly throughout and, but for great work from Sam Johnstone in United’s goal, they could have made it considerably more difficult for the Reds.

Both sides were taken to a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final before booking their place in the final. United defeated Blackpool 5-4, on penalties, after drawing 0-0 at Moss Lane. The Reds overcame Blackburn Rovers 4-0 in the quarter-final after receiving a bye in the first round. Accrington enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win against Oldham Athletic in the quarter-final before ousting Wigan Athletic in the last four, 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Stanley were also handed a bye in the first round of the competition.

There was little to choose between the teams in the early stages and it’s probably true to say that Johnstone was the busier of the two goalkeepers. Johnstone was kept active by the Lancashire side and he was called upon to make several important saves including a brilliant block from striker Padraig Amond three minutes before the break.

United had been limited in attack with Tom Lawrence, a 23rd minute substitute for the injured Luke Giverin, going agonisingly close with a curling drive. Accrington appeared to have negotiated the first half on level terms with their illustrious opponents, but just before the referee blew for the interval, Lawrence struck to put United into the lead. Accrington keeper Ian Dunbavin did well to block Lawrence’s first shot, but the United player followed up to find the net at the second attempt.

United looked as though they were going to take complete control of the game early in the second half, particularly after Larnell Cole had rounded Dunbavin to put United two-up, but Stanley came back strongly as the half progressed. Johnstone came to United’s aid again during the second spell as Stanley went looking for a goal.

The game, and the destination of the trophy, was effectively put beyond their grasp, with nine minutes remaining, when Cole grabbed his secod of the night following smart work from Joshua King. Norwegian striker King had the last word when he cracked home United fourth goal, from Marnick Vermijl’s pass, in the final minute.

Scott Wootton's early strike was enough to earn victory in United's first-ever Under-21*league match at Stoke City as Darren Fletcher played the full 90 minutes to continue his bid for full fitness.

The Reds had to*survive a couple of scares but only some wayward finishing prevented the*three points from being wrapped up as there were plenty of signs that this could be another successful season for Warren Joyce's*charges.

Stoke*included four over-aged players in their line-up*and almost went ahead*on four minutes*when one of them, Mamady Sidibe, rattled the bar after Andrew Musungu got the better of Michael*Keane. Yet United were also swiftly into top gear as*the impressive Tyler Blackett whipped in a cross that really should have been converted*by Joshua King, who instead headed wide.

A minute later, some neat build-up work involving Jesse*Lingard and Ryan Tunnicliffe led to Wootton looping a*shot over Carlo Nash and into the net via the far post for a goal that seemed to surprise everybody at the Weaver Stadium.

King was*a real threat*virtually all game*but could not apply a finishing touch to his powerful approach play. The Norwegian forced a*diving save out of Nash and*shot wildly off target when teed up by Blackett. The striker then fed Davide Petrucci but the*Italian's finish was blocked by Ben Heneghan.

Sam Johnstone was in top form at the other end, making two great stops to thwart Musungu and the same player dragged a glorious opening wide before the interval while King also scooped another attempt off target.

Stoke improved in the second half and had a goal harshly ruled out for offside when Abu-Bakarr Kargbo rounded Johnstone to find the net on 51 minutes while Jordan Richardson and Diego Arismendi spurned two chances in quick succession.

A rare opening for United was wasted when King headed straight at Nash after Wootton galloped down the right and delivered an inviting cross and Larnell Cole hammered a speculative effort well over the top. Wootton continued to enjoy moving forward and could not convert a difficult aerial opportunity after Fletcher dug out a cross from the right.

The Reds held out pretty comfortably in the end to start the campaign with a hard-fought victory and Fletcher will be delighted to get 90 minutes under his belt.

Federico Macheda scored both goals as a strong United side*made it two wins out of two in the new Barclays Under-21 Premier League with a 2-1 triumph against Tottenham.*

Recent recruit Alexander Buttner made his first appearance for the club at left-back while Jonny Evans, Darren Fletcher and Anders*Lindegaard all played the full 90 minutes.

With Sir Alex Ferguson, Angelo Henriquez and Tom Cleverley amongst those in attendance, a goal arrived almost instantly, with*around 70 seconds*on the clock. Ryan Tunnicliffe won the ball in midfield to release Macheda and, when his shot was blocked by Jordan Archer, it rebounded back off the Italian and deflected into the net.

Joshua King's blistering pace and some wayward shooting were the main features of the rest of the first half with Nick Powell having a shot blocked and then unable to supply the finishing touch following a run by the electric King. Captain Scott Wootton beat Harry Kane to head a dangerous cross behind and Spurs had openings but Andros Townsend, Iago Falque and Kane provided disappointing attempts.

King skied his finish after being put in the clear by the impressive Macheda and Robbie Brady clubbed an equally wayward shot off target as the Reds went in for the break a goal to the good. Buttner had to make a goalline clearance to thwart Townsend at the start of the second period before Macheda extended the lead from the penalty spot.

Powell collected a pass from the Italian striker and was unceremoniously bundled over by Adam Smith, allowing Macheda to calmly slot in his second goal of the night. Archer denied Michael Keane but Lindegaard was called upon at the other end to show his class. The Dane made a truly astounding double save to frustrate Jonathan Obika and Kane, although the latter's effort would have been ruled out for offside.

Lindegaard dived to prevent Obika netting a tremendous overhead kick from Kane's header and Warren Joyce introduced Jesse Lingard and Larnell Cole in a bid to regain control. However, after Kane worked Lindegaard again, the young striker earned a penalty after tumbling under Wootton's challenge. Ryan Mason drilled in the spot-kick to give Spurs hope with 10 minutes left and end a run of over 10 hours without conceding a goal competitively for Joyce's team.

The Reds*held out with Tom Thorpe replacing King*to add more defensive stability but*the visitors provided a real test throughout the encounter.

Saya lihat pertandingan ini tadi malam dan harus saya akui kalau saya terkesan dengan permainan yang ditampilkan Buttner.

Dia main sebagai fullback kiri dan dia sangat sering maju ke depan membombardir pertahanan lawan. Larinya cepat dan beberapa kali melakukan dribble melewati lawan. Punya tendangan kaki kiri yang sangat keras (satu tedangannya membentur tiang gawang).

Dia juga main sangat disiplin dan solid di belakang, satu kali dia melakukan clearance header di depan gawang kita. Satu hal yang sangat saya suka dari Buttner adalah dia berani duel dengan lawan dan melakukan tackle2 keras. Mungkin dia beberapa agak terlalu semangat jadi beberapi kali tacklenya miss tapi dia dengan sejalannya waktu saya yakin dia bisa lebih dewasa dalam mengambil keputusan.

Praktis kekhawatiran saya kalau kemampuan bertahannya jelek pupus dari melihat pertandingan ini karena ternyata dia punya kemampuan bertahan yang bagus. Kalau dia bisa terus konsistem bukan tidak mungkin dia bisa jadi the next Patrice Evra.

Hal positif lain adalah Fletcher bermain full 90 menit untuk kedua kalinya (setelah main 90 menit lawan stoke U-21 minggu lalu). Mainnya lumayan tapi dia tidak memperlihatkan keagresivitasan yang selama ini jadi ciri khasnya, dan mungkin ini wajar mengingat dia baru bermain kembali setalah sekian lama. Walaupun masih jelas terlihat kalau perjalanannya kembali ke tim utama masih jauh, tapi setidaknya 2 pertandingan awal ini bisa jadi awal yang bagus untuk Fletch.

Berita baik lainnya adalah Johnny Evans juga main 90 menit jadi kemungkinan dia bisa turun lawan Soton besok :)

Anders Lindegaard main bagus dan double savenya mendapatkan banyak pujian.

Selain pemain tim utama di atas, pemain2 muda yang tampil bagus di pertandingan ini adalah King, Powell dan Tunnicliffe. Seperti biasa King main sangat lincah dan hidup tapi finishingnya masih kacau, sama seperti pertandingan lawan Stoke U-21 minggu lalu di mana dia banyak menyia2kan peluang. Powell main solid walaupun ga spektakuler, selalu berani melakukan tendangan jarak jauh khasnya dan Tunnicliffe juga main rapi di tengah dan bisa ngasih kover yang bagus bagi lini belakang.

Thanks review-nya @taz_devil_utd. Mungkin ini penampilan terakhir Macheda. Moga dia bisa dipinjamin buat nambah pengalaman. Gimana penampilan Lingard dan Cole? Musim lalu mereka sosok vital di reserve.

Lingard dan Cole cuma main 30 menit, tapi setelah mereka masuk United secara keseluruhan bisa pegang bola lebih bagus.

Pemain2 yang jadi starting line up hampir ga ada yang bisa pegang bola atau mengatur ritme permainan. 3 gelandang tengah yang dimainin semua bertipe box-to-box dan ball winner (Fletch, Tunnicliffe, dan Powell), jadi praktis ball posession dipegang Tottenham. Walaupun Tunni tampil beringas dengan tackle2 kerasnya, kita cuma mengandalkan counterattack cepat lewat trio Macheda-King-Brady.

Masuknya Lingard dan Cole membuat ball keeping United jadi lebih baik tapi mereka ga bisa meningkatkan tempo permainan United. Mungkin karena lini tengah udah capek (Flecth terlihat sangat kecapekan di 15 menit terakhir).
