UNITED TAKE MOMENTUM INTO LIVERPOOL TEST

The late winner at Crystal Palace had multiple benefits: it inspired a moment of pure joy, secured three Premier League points and, perhaps most importantly, enhanced the momentum behind Jose Mourinho’s United before Saturday’s crunch match against old rivals Liverpool.

That blockbuster game at Old Trafford could determine who finishes second in the table and, as the manager has repeatedly stated, that remains the ambition with the title seemingly out of reach.

Having twice come from behind against Chelsea and Palace over the last fortnight, there is no doubt that United head into the fixture with increased confidence, belief and a little bit of swagger. The images that followed Nemanja Matic’s half-volley at Selhurst Park were almost cinematic, and you should not underestimate how galvanising that result could be for both the squad and fans.

The Reds must now harness the feel-good factor and wield it throughout Saturday’s pivotal match with Liverpool, which is coincidentally the 200th competitive fixture between the two clubs.

Chris Smalling was accurate when he stated the players will train this week with smiles on their faces and our Serbian match-winner, Matic, shrewdly highlighted the increased momentum that is now behind the Reds. Yet Nemanja was also wise enough to acknowledge the players must also improve their performance levels when Jurgen Klopp’s third-placed side visit the Theatre of Dreams.

“It is obviously great to win game by game and when you have a match against Liverpool coming up, a big derby, it is important to go into that with a win,” Matic opined on Monday.

“We will show the same character as we did tonight, but we have to be honest: we have to play better, especially when you see our first half performance. We have to do more if we want to win as Liverpool is a team with great quality and we have to do more. We have to play better, but with the same character.”

Speaking of character, there was plenty shown by United’s travelling fans at Selhurst Park and Jose Mourinho reserved special praise for them while speaking to MUTV. The manager stated such a support is now required at Old Trafford, with a triumvirate of high-profile occasions to come in all competitions.

“It is a big game against Liverpool,” Jose said. “I think we both want to finish in the top four, but we both want to finish second so, yes, it is a big game. Then we have Sevilla in the Champions League knockout and Brighton in the FA Cup knockout, so three big matches at Old Trafford.”

As a result of 'that' late winner, the fans are on a high and creating a vociferous atmosphere will not be a problem on Saturday afternoon, according to a man who is well-versed in the rivalry.

“What a lift the Palace win is for the game against Liverpool, not just for the fans but everybody associated with the club,” Paddy Crerand explained. “We're all looking forward to the game now and feeling confident, rather than having doubts. Those were three big points for United on Monday.”

United v Liverpool kicks off at 12:30 GMT on Saturday and MUTV's live build-up will start at 10:30.

Manchester United must improve on Crystal Palace display if we want to beat Liverpool, admits Nemanja Matic

* Nemanja Matic says Liverpool are a team of 'great quality' ahead of league clash
* The Serbian warns Manchester United team-mates they must 'do more' to win
* Matic scored the winning goal vs Crystal Palace to complete a huge comeback

Manchester United showed plenty of character in Monday's come-from-behind Premier League win over Crystal Palace but they need to show improvement when Liverpool visit Old Trafford at the weekend, midfielder Nemanja Matic has said.

Matic scored his first United goal with a superb volleyed added-time winner as they recovered from two goals down to seal a 3-2 victory that took them back up to second place above Liverpool ahead of Saturday's blockbuster Premier League clash.

'We have to do more if we want to win, as Liverpool is a team with great quality. We have to play better, but with the same character,' Matic told the club's website.

Nemanja Matic says Manchester United need to improve if they want to beat Liverpool

'We'll show the same character as we did (against Palace)... but we have to be honest... we have to play better, especially when you see our first half performance.

'It is obviously great to win game by game and when you have a match against Liverpool coming up, a big derby, it's important to go into that with a win,' Serbia international Matic added.

With runaway leaders Manchester City closing in on their third league title in seven seasons, attention has shifted to the fight for Champions League qualification and United's battle with Liverpool to finish second behind their neighbours.

Jose Mourinho's United side have 62 points and lead the Merseyside club by two with nine game remaining.

Both clubs are also targeting European glory, with Liverpool reaching the Champions League quarter-finals after a 5-0 aggregate win over Porto while United face Sevilla in the return leg of their last 16 clash on Tuesday having drawn 0-0 away.

United host Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup quarter-finals on the Saturday following the match with the Spaniards.

'It is a big game against Liverpool,' Mourinho said. 'I think we both want to finish in the top four, but we both want to finish second so, yes, it is a big game.

'Then we have Sevilla in the Champions League knockout and Brighton in the FA Cup knockout, so three big matches at Old Trafford,' the Portuguese manager added.

UNITED V LIVERPOOL: SIX TALKING POINTS

Matches between Manchester United and Liverpool rarely disappoint and don’t need any kind of introduction.

Jose Mourinho’s men will be raring to go after coming from behind to beat both Chelsea and Crystal Palace in the last two Premier League games.

As ever when the two rivals go head to head, there are plenty of sub-plots and we’ve picked out six topics up for discussion ahead of Saturday’s showdown…

THE BATTLE FOR SECOND PLACE

The first Premier League match of the weekend pits second against third, with United currently leading the race to finish in the runners-up spot, with the title seemingly out of reach. There are currently two points separating the two sides, who have taken turns to occupy second place in recent weeks. But, crucially, Mourinho’s team have momentum at a good time and victory this weekend would open up a five-point gap over the Merseysiders with just eight games left to play, which could be significant at this stage of the season.

RIVALRY REACHES KEY LANDMARK
The Saturday lunchtime encounter at the Theatre of Dreams will be our 200th competitive meeting with Liverpool in an intense rivalry that stretches all the way back to April 1894. United have the upper hand over the previous 199 games, winning 79 to Liverpool’s 65, and there have been 55 draws. Overall, we have scored 272 goals against Liverpool, conceding 251. After four consecutive draws between the sides, the Reds will be eager to mark the milestone by getting the better of the Merseysiders for the first time since September 2015.

IS MARTIAL IN OR OUT?
Anthony Martial capped a debut to remember in that aforementioned fixture three years ago, coming off the bench to seal a 3-1 success with a well-taken finish in front of the Stretford End. He will be hoping to be involved on Saturday and have a positive impact against Liverpool once again, after missing Monday’s thrilling comeback victory at Crystal Palace through injury. The boss could give an update on the Frenchman's fitness in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

WHO COULD PLAY FOR LIVERPOOL?
There was plenty of debate surrounding Jurgen Klopp’s team selection for Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League last-16 second leg against FC Porto, with his side already holding a virtually unassailable 5-0 lead from the first leg. The Liverpool boss made five changes for the goalless draw at Anfield from their 2-0 home win over Newcastle in the league last weekend, handing Adam Lallana a first start in two months after injury and giving some game time to forgotten striker Danny Ings off the bench in the second half. But the Merseysiders are likely to return to a full-strength side on Saturday, with Nathaniel Clyne expected to be their only absentee.

SHUTTING OUT THE MERSEYSIDERS
Liverpool's attack has earned praise this season, with the club scoring 67 Premier League goals so far. But United comfortably kept a clean sheet at Anfield in the goalless draw back in October and are one of only six teams to shut out the Merseysiders in their 42 games in all competitions this term. Encouragingly, heading into Saturday’s game, Mourinho’s men hold the best defensive home record in the Premier League this season – conceding just six times at Old Trafford in our 14 top-flight games. Add into the mix the fact United have kept four clean sheets during an unbeaten run of seven league encounters against Liverpool and it stands to reason that a solid defensive base can set the platform for a crucial victory.

A CRUCIAL HOME RUN BEGINS
The visit of our fierce rivals from across the North West is the first of three massive home games for United in the space of seven days in three different competitions – with a decisive Champions League last-16 tie against Sevilla to come on Tuesday night, followed by an Emirates FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton. The boss has called for a big atmosphere on Saturday, which would help give the players an extra lift in their quest to secure a win that would be well received and could set the tone for a positive week ahead.

WILL OUR GAME-CHANGING SUBS START?

It’s an obvious point to make but the identity of both starting XIs will have a large bearing on the outcome of Saturday’s big clash between Manchester United and Liverpool.

United have a number of injury doubts, with Anthony Martial, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Marouane Fellaini, Daley Blind and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all having been absent for differing periods of time.

It remains to be seen whether any of them will be in contention to face the Merseysiders at Old Trafford, but Jose Mourinho will have other selection decisions to make as he masterminds his victory plan.

One – or rather three – of those could centre on the substitutes who made a game-changing impact when they came off the bench for the second half of Monday’s dramatic 3-2 victory at Crystal Palace.

Marcus Rashford replaced Scott McTominay at the interval and immediately injected a threat with his pace and direct running from the left flank.

Juan Mata and Luke Shaw also impressed after coming on for Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young respectively with 23 minutes left.

And Twitter was awash with praise for the impact of the three replacements against Palace…

Essa Al-Khalifa tweeted: “Mata and Rashford completely changed the game. We began to pass with purpose and with intent. Fair play, Jose.”

Tom Roddy commented: “It doesn’t always work, but Juan Mata coming on was the difference for MUFC. His runs, link-up play, getting in between the lines. He was the antidote Mourinho and United needed.”

Manas Sinha said: “All the substitutes were game changers. Rashford kept width with Shaw on the left which allowed Mata to make his runs in behind the defence causing havoc in the Palace defence.”

Mata has been a regular in the XI this season and may have been in Mourinho’s starting plans on Saturday anyway, but Rashford and Shaw have perhaps given the boss food for thought as he ponders the make-up of his team.

Rashford played on the left to accommodate Alexis Sanchez’s central shift at Selhurst Park, with Jesse Lingard initially moving out to the right wing, before switching to what Mourinho called a “crazy” right-back role when Mata replaced Valencia.

The manager was certainly pleased with his substitutions’ contribution, telling reporters after the game: “Marcus was good. Immediately he created dangerous situations and opened more spaces between defenders, where our attacking players could make runs and penetrate these gaps.

“From the wider positional point of view he was very good for us. And I think what I call a crazy right-back was also very important because we had to take the risks and Lingard as a right-back is this kind of crazy right-back that can make a defensive mistake by losing his position but can also be an extra man attacking other areas.

“It was difficult for them; Roy [Hodgson] saw it. He brought [Jaïro] Riedewald to play wide and cover him, but he was really aggressive and Mata was coming to the inside, so we created a lot of problems in the second half.”

Mourinho has deployed a 4-3-3 formation in recent games, having often favoured a 4-2-3-1 before that, and it’ll be interesting to see which system he considers most effective against Jurgen Klopp’s side, who are the Premier League’s leading scorers on the road this term with 34 goals.

Perhaps the only players we can predict with a certain degree of confidence to be in the starting line-up on Saturday, based on what has gone before this season, are David De Gea, Chris Smalling, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku. Yet the fact there’s another huge home game – against Sevilla – only three days after Liverpool could influence the manager’s selection decisions.

Re: [EPL] Manchester United vs Liverpool

Manchester United will defend deep again but we'll play attacking football, vows Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren

* Manchester United host Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon
* In the reverse fixture earlier this season, United managed just one shot on target
* Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren expects United be as equally defensive-minded

Dejan Lovren has claimed Jose Mourinho will revert to his cautious type on Saturday as he vowed Liverpool will be committed to all-out attack.

The biggest rivalry in English football resumes at Old Trafford with the winner of this showdown almost certain to finish runners-up to Manchester City; it is Liverpool's intention to go for victory and utilise the talents of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

When the teams last met at Anfield in October, Mourinho set his team up not to lose - a point highlighted by the fact that United barely threatened and only managed one tame shot on target in 90 minutes.

https://s9.postimg.org/ar12jmvq7/49_...rinho_s_ta.jpg
Dejan Lovren expects Manchester United to be defensive when Liverpool visit on Saturday. Speaking about United boss Jose Mourinho's tactics - Lovren believes they'll defend deep

Liverpool, it should be noted, were not much better in that fixture but their form has improved dramatically since then and Lovren, whose performances have improved since Virgil van Dijk arrived at the club in January, is adamant they will be committed to going for goals.

'It will be a tough challenge definitely,' said Lovren. 'Last time, when they came here, they defend really deep so let's see what happens now.'

Asked whether United would defend deep again, he replied: 'I think so. They need the points, definitely. For them it will be maybe a point good but for us, we never play for a point. We are there; we will give our best. We will play like we play every day, attacking football. Let's enjoy it.

'You know, Mourinho has his own plans. Whatever he wants to do, it is not our job to know. It is our job to focus on ourselves and play how we hope will beat them. We didn't do the best game in our season (against Porto) but we can concentrate for the next game, the big game against United.'

Lovren will square up to Lukaku for the first time since the pair clashed at Anfield. The Croatia defender accused the Belgium international of deliberately kicking him in the face; the Football Association studied the video of the clash but said Lukaku had no charge to face.

'He is a top striker,' said Lovren, who revealed that the pair had not had contact since Anfield.

'We can say what we want (but) he scores many goals. Maybe they are not in the best shape but still they win ugly. What matters is the points. It (the stamp) is over. There is another game.

'I enjoy playing against big, top strikers. The biggest challenge for me is when you have Mo Salah and Sadio Mane at the training ground - then you know what you are. Definitely Lukaku is one of the best strikers in the Premier League. He showed that many times.'

MATCH PREVIEW: MANCHESTER UNITED V LIVERPOOL

Setting the scene… United begin a huge week at Old Trafford on Saturday with a lunchtime showdown against Liverpool, in what is always one of the biggest games of any season. With crucial home matches against Sevilla and Brighton to follow, Jose Mourinho's men will be looking to build on the momentum gained from consecutive comeback wins over Chelsea and Crystal Palace in the last two Premier League matches. In what is a significant match in the battle for second place, United will look to widen the gap over the Merseysiders to five points with a victory and extend our unbeaten run against the Anfield club in the top flight to eight matches.

How can I watch it? Saturday's big match kicks off at 12:30 GMT and will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports. MUTV subscribers on Sky or Virgin Media, the MUTV app, or online at MUTV.com can enjoy match build-up from 10:30 GMT on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game, before watching it in full on Sunday at 18:00 GMT. You can also keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com's live match blog and our official Twitter account @ManUtd.

What's the team news? United were without seven players for Monday's thrilling comeback victory over Crystal Palace. Anthony Martial, who marked his United debut with a memorable goal in our last victory over Liverpool in September 2015, missed the trip to Selhurst Park through injury, while Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have been missing for varying periods of time. The boss could give a further update on his squad in Friday's pre-match press conference. For Liverpool, Nathaniel Clyne is edging towards fitness but is unlikely to feature, while Georginio Wijnaldum is struggling with illness and captain Jordan Henderson is also doubtful due to an ongoing leg issue.

How are Liverpool doing? After a relatively slow start to the season, Jurgen Klopp's men have put together a fine run of form to climb up to third in the table. The Merseysiders are unbeaten in their last five Premier League matches since a surprise 1-0 defeat at Swansea City at the end of January. They have only lost three games in the league this season and have scored more goals away from home (34) than any other club.

How have we fared against Liverpool in the past? Saturday's clash will be the 200th meeting between the sides in all competitions - and 52nd in the Premier League era - in what has been a fierce and passionate rivalry stretching over 124 years. United have won 79 of the previous 199 encounters, while Liverpool have won 65 and there have been 55 draws. The last four meetings have ended in draws and United have not been beaten by the Merseysiders in the league since March 2014.

What happened earlier in the season? United made the trip to Anfield in the reverse fixture in mid-October and came away with a hard-earned point as the two rivals played out a goalless draw, which extended our unbeaten start to 2017/18 in the Premier League.

What's Jose Mourinho's record like against Liverpool? Since taking charge at Old Trafford, the boss has drawn all three of his matches against the Merseysiders, so he will be keen to record his first victory over them as United manager on Saturday. In total, Jose has faced the Anfield club 26 times during his career in all competitions and boasts an impressive record of 11 wins, nine draws and just six defeats.

One to watch: When Philippe Coutinho left for Barcelona in January, doubts were raised as to how Liverpool would function without their wellspring of Brazilian flair and creativity. But, the man they call 'the Pharaoh' has enjoyed a memorable debut season so far. Mohamed Salah has scored 33 goals, including six in his last five league matches, and registered 11 assists in all competitions this season. In the Premier League, the Egyptian has been particularly impressive and tops the goalscoring charts, having netted a goal every 92 minutes on average. The United defence kept the African Player of the Year quiet at Anfield earlier this season and know it will be another tough task to stop him scoring again.

Did you know? After scoring his 99th Premier League goal in the comeback triumph at Crystal Palace, Romelu Lukaku could bring up his century against Liverpool on Saturday. The Belgian striker, who is United's top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions this season, has previously netted five times against the Anfield club in his career - three in Merseyside derbies with Everton and twice while on loan at West Bromwich Albion from Chelsea.

What do you think the result will be? Get involved and make your prediction with the Manchester United Score Predictor and win amazing prizes throughout the season with Marathonbet.

Who’s the referee? Craig Pawson will referee his fifth United match this season, after taking charge of our matches both home and away against Southampton and Newcastle United respectively. The FIFA official from Sheffield has also overseen three Liverpool matches this campaign, with the most recent being their 1-1 draw against neighbours Everton at Anfield in December. Pawson, who will handle a United game against Liverpool for the first time, will be assisted by Gary Beswick and Peter Kirkup, with Martin Atkinson acting as the fourth official.

THE RIVALRY BETWEEN TWO TRIBES

It's English football's most epic saga. A long battle for supremacy that's endured through decades of contrasting fortunes.

As the rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool gears up for game number 200, we plot its fiery ebb and flow from a United perspective, while sifting through 124 years of history…

MATCH 26
2 April 1915: United 2 Liverpool 0 (Division 1, Old Trafford)

Despite the simmering rivalry, the two teams weren't always at loggerheads. On Good Friday 1915, with football about to be suspended due to the escalating barbarity on the Western Front, seven players – four Liverpool, three United – colluded to fix a match that helped United avoid relegation, earning themselves life bans. A period of Scouse dominance followed the war: United were relegated in 1922, and Liverpool seized two consecutive titles, making it 4-2. The tarnished Good Friday win was our last over the Merseysiders until 1928.

MATCH 50 AND 51:
6 May 1939: United 2 Liverpool 0 (Division 1, Old Trafford)
11 September 1946: United 5 Liverpool 0 (Division 1, Old Trafford)

But things would shift, and how. In May 1939, Liverpool’s then-captain completed his final season as a professional in a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford that was decided by two Jimmy Hanlon goals. The Stretford-born Hanlon’s next league game would be seven years and one world war later. His new manager? The ex-Liverpool captain, Matt Busby.

The impact Busby wrought was immediate. His new charges doled out a 5-0 schooling to his former club just weeks into the first post-war season, although Liverpool ultimately triumphed by a single, agonising point come May, thanks to 24 goals from Albert Stubbins – football’s only representative on the legendary cover of The Beatles’ 1967 opus Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Yet another title wended its way to Anfield, but the agents of change were in place. The goalscorers here – Stan Pearson, Jack Rowley and Charlie Mitten – were among the core of Busby’s first great United side: the 1948 FA Cup winners. Liverpool’s supremacy was about to be swept away by an emerging superpower.

MATCH 67
19 December 1953: United 5 Liverpool 1 (Division 1, Old Trafford)

The 1951/52 season brought United’s first championship since 1911, but Busby’s real stroke of genius was yet to be unfurled. Behind the scenes, his network of scouts and coaches were amassing, nurturing and inspiring arguably the finest group of young talent Britain has ever seen. In December 1953, the first seeds of the great pre-Munich side were sprouting: a United XI featuring Jackie Blanchflower, Tommy Taylor, Johnny Berry, Roger Byrne and 17-year-old Duncan Edwards - making just his ninth appearance – laid waste to Liverpool, who were relegated at the end of the campaign. United’s precocious Busby Babes won the title by 11 points in 1956 and eight in 1957. Busby’s masterstroke, and the tragedy of Munich, imbued the club with a romance that set United apart from every other club in the country; something which the all-conquering Liverpool of the future would grow to resent.

MATCH 74
24 April 1965: United 3 Liverpool 0 (Division 1, Old Trafford)

The 1960s arrived, and Liverpool gifted The Beatles to the world. Manchester responded with its own one-man Beatles: the freakishly talented and eternally cool George Best. Bill Shankly, like his great pal Busby, had sculpted Liverpool according to his own vision; dragging them from the depths of Division Two to the 1963/64 title. This 3-0 win gave United decisive breathing space in the 1964/65 race, but Liverpool roared back in 1966, and United did likewise in 1967. The mid-'60s ding-dong finished at 7-7, although United’s 1968 European Cup win handed Busby the edge. The freewheeling genius of Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton furthered United’s glamorous sheen, despite Shankly’s gritty, selfless side matching them for silverware. The two managers had a friendly but competitive rivalry, but that cordial veneer vanished when both departed in the 1970s. Liverpool were about to surge ahead of everyone, while United headed for relegation.

MATCH 98
21 May 1977: United 2 Liverpool 1 (FA Cup final, Wembley)

By 1977, Liverpool’s number of First Division titles had soared into double figures. But days before the Merseysiders would beat Borussia Monchengladbach to win the first of four European Cups in eight seasons, Tommy Docherty’s wildly entertaining United side denied them a domestic Double – and possible Treble – with a Herculean smash-and-grab at Wembley, thanks to Stuart ‘Pancho’ Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff. 'Pack up your Treble in your old kit bag' read a United banner. Twelve months later, TV presenter, music impresario and big Red Tony Wilson wore a Club Brugge rosette live on air, as Liverpool prepared for their next European final. Resentment was growing.

MATCH 141

4 January 1994: Liverpool 3 United 3 (Premier League, Anfield)

United rocked up at Anfield as champions for the first time since November 1967. Inspired by Eric Cantona and Ryan Giggs, Ferguson’s boys stormed into a 3-0 lead inside 25 minutes. Liverpool would salvage a 3-3 draw in the second half, but the point had been made: United were back, and a newly-swaggering beast to be reckoned with. Anfield unfurled a banner saying 'Au revoir, Cantona. Come back when you’ve won 18'. It would not be forgotten.

MATCH 147
11 May 1996: United 1 Liverpool 0 (FA Cup final, Wembley)

Ferguson’s campaign to “knock Liverpool off their perch” barely wasted a minute once United nailed that first title in 1992/93. When the sides met for the 1996 FA Cup final, United were bidding to become the first club to win a second Double. They succeeded, with virtually the last kick of the season, from Cantona. The scowling face of former Liverpool chairman David Moores, slumped in the royal box as Eric collected the trophy, confirmed that United’s resurgence was not especially popular on Merseyside.

MATCH 173
3 March 2007: Liverpool 0 United 1 (Premier League, Anfield)

Despite United’s dominion in England, just one European Cup had been added - in 1999. Painfully, Liverpool claimed their fifth in Istanbul in 2005. But in the great historical domestic race, United were closing in. John O’Shea’s late – and undeserved – winner at Anfield was a pivotal moment in the 2006/07 Premier League. Liverpool had battered Edwin van der Sar’s goal all afternoon, and when Paul Scholes was sent off after swinging for Xabi Alonso, bums really began to squeak. But up stepped O’Shea, at the Kop end, to break and infuriate Liverpool hearts in the most delicious way. United were just two away from 18.

MATCH 180
19 September 2010: United 3 Liverpool 2 (Premier League, Old Trafford)

On the way to eclipsing Liverpool's haul with title no.19 in the 2010/11 season, United got the better of the Merseysiders in an entertaining early-season battle at the Theatre of Dreams. One man ultimately stole the show, as Dimitar Berbatov adorned himself to the Old Trafford faithful with a memorable hat-trick. The Bulgarian striker struck twice either side of half-time, including a stunning overhead kick, to put Ferguson's men in control before Steven Gerrard threatened to upstage him by scoring a brace of his own which drew the visitors level. But, determined to have the final say, Berbatov stepped up six minutes of time to produce the decisive moment, towering above the Liverpool defence to power home a header and seal a deserved victory for United.

MATCH 192
22 March 2015: Liverpool 1 United 2 (Premier League, Anfield)

Ferguson’s 2013 retirement left United with 20 titles to Liverpool’s 18, but a 37-year period heavily coloured by the two sides’ respective dynasties was over. Neither have won a title since, though the totemic feel around the matches remains undimmed. Liverpool came within a whisker in 2014, before Steven Gerrard’s costly slip against Chelsea, and when United visited Anfield a year later, the away end hammered the midfielder with a 15-minute rendition of ‘You nearly won the league’ as he warmed up as a substitute. When he entered the fray, he immediately flew into two furious challenges and, incredibly, was dismissed within 38 seconds. It was his final action against United, and the Liverpool legend made sure he left his mark. There were no titles at stake here; just pride. The enemy were 1-0 up and knocking the ball around arrogantly on Gerrard’s patch. It was as clear an indication as any of the primal pull this fixture carries, and always will do, while football is played within these two great cities. “It doesn't matter if we’re playing tiddlywinks,” Ferguson once remarked. “When we get together, expect sparks to fly.”

MATCH 193
12 September 2015: United 3 Liverpool 1 (Premier League, Old Trafford)

Following on from David Moyes' reign, Louis van Gaal was the next United manager to experience the bitter rivalry and it proved to be a memorable occasion at the Theatre of Dreams - particularly for one man. The name on everyone's lips was Anthony Martial following his deadline-day arrival from Monaco and a new United star was christened on the biggest of stages. Daley Blind's crisp finish and Ander Herrera's penalty had put van Gaal's side in control before Christian Benteke pulled one back for Liverpool. The game was back in the balance and it was the signal for Martial to make himself an instant hero. On as a second-half substitute in place of Juan Mata, the Frenchman marked his debut in the grand manner, slaloming his way through the Liverpool defence before stroking calmly past Simon Mignolet in front of an exultant Stretford End to wrap up a fine win - our last victory over the Merseysiders. Let's hope that changes on Saturday!

EARLY TEAM NEWS: UNITED V LIVERPOOL

Jose Mourinho says Marouane Fellaini could be back in the Manchester United squad for Saturday’s crunch Premier League clash with Liverpool.

The Belgian midfielder has not featured for the Reds since being substituted in the second half of the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on 31 January after undergoing surgery on an ongoing knee problem.

The boss also confirmed that defender Eric Bailly is fully fit after making only two substitute appearances since returning to the fold after three months out with a knee injury.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex, Jose said: "Yeah, he [Bailly] was fully fit for a couple of weeks. Yeah, but he's okay. The only one that is back to the team is Fellaini."

The boss suggested in an interview with MUTV that Anthony Martial would not be available, after missing Monday’s 3-2 win at Crystal Palace through injury.

“It’s basically the same [squad],” he said. “The people injured are recovering step by step and a few of them are very, very close to a return – but not yet. We are fine, we have a squad ready for everything. The number we choose – 23 – was to protect them and we are coping with that.”

Saturday’s eagerly awaited encounter at Old Trafford will be United’s 200th meeting with Liverpool in all competitions stretching back to 1894 – but the boss played down the significance of the historic rivalry.

“In my mentality, every match is the same,” he told his press conference. “I'm not very good on that culture - ‘this rivalry is special, that match is special’. I've never been very good at it. I never look to AC Milan has the biggest rival, I never look at Atletico [Madrid] as the enemy, I never look to Spurs or Arsenal as the big rival, I've never been any good on it.

“For me it is just a big match, two historical clubs, not just in England, but in the world. In this moment, [there are] important points for the top four, important points for second position, which is better than third or fourth place. I still don’t look to some matches as special opponents. It's just a big match, because we are speaking about two big clubs.”

Meanwhile, for Liverpool, left-back Andy Robertson, captain Jordan Henderson and midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum are in contention to return after struggling with respective injuries recently. Boss Jurgen Klopp also told his pre-match press conference on Friday that right-back Nathaniel Clyne is edging towards fitness but won't be considered for the game.

MUTV’s exclusive live build-up to United v Liverpool will start at 10:30 GMT on Saturday.

No Pogba. Quiet surprising.

When asked why the club's record signing Pogba was not among the starters or seven substitutes, the United boss revealed: "He is injured. [It happened] yesterday in training, an unlucky situation, and he is out. I don't know how long he is out for."

Turning to the inclusion of Mata, who made an influential substitute appearance in Monday's win at Crystal Palace, Mourinho said: "I trust his experience. I trust his capacity to move into areas where he can connect our game because he is intelligent. Liverpool is a strong team on the counter-attack and in transition."

MOURINHO SAVOURS A PERFECT RESULT

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho gave his verdict on the 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford during his post-match press conference.

The manager managed to cope without Paul Pogba, who was injured in training on the eve of the game, and Anthony Martial, among other absent players, as he masterminded a terrific win that takes United five points clear of our rivals from down the East Lancs Road.

The hard-earned success, on the back of the incredible comeback at Crystal Palace on Monday, means the Reds are strengthening claims for second spot in the table behind leaders Manchester City.

PERFECT DAY?
"A perfect result. Three points, which are very important, but a perfect performance? I wouldn't go so far as to say that. I say perfect in relation to what the game gave us in the first half, it gave us the opportunity to be aggressive, direct, fast, intense and to score goals. Probably more - probably a third as Juan Mata's shot would have been [an] amazing and fantastic [goal]. The second half was a different match and we adapted to it."

TACTICS WORKED
"We gave options to the players. Different options. I'm not a kind of mechanical coach that says A pass to B, B pass to C, C pass to D. I'm much more preparing my players to decide well in how they feel the game. They had different options, we also had the possibility of the long ball to Scott McTominay, to bring McTominay wide to play on Andrew Robertson in the air. Romelu Lukaku was confident he could be dominant in relation to Dejan Lovren."

FANS UPSET TO SEE RASHFORD SUBSTITUTED
"You know, the fans can do what they want. I'm not upset at all with that reaction. I'm upset with the reaction they had to McTominay, a kid of 20 years, making all the right decisions. They want him to make the wrong decisions. When a kid decides to break the intensity of the game, not to lose it but to keep possession and play a backpass, he gives a solution of keeping the ball in the opposing half. It was the correct solution but so many top players, experienced players, wouldn't do it. The fans can react against me for my decisions - it's not a problem."

REASON WHY MARCUS CAME OFF
"I heard Gary Neville was asking [on Sky Sports] for Marcus Rashford to get a red card and I was scared maybe the referee was watching it at half-time! When we were more defensive in the second half, obviously, as Liverpool pushed for that situation, they brought a lot of players into central positions. Ashley Young had to come inside so Rashford was defending the corridor against Alexander-Arnold with a yellow card and with pressure. I made the decision to replace him with a player who could make one foul on Alexander-Arnold.

IS BAILLY INJURED?
"I don't know. He had a fantastic performance. An amazing goal! [laughs]. He showed great spirit to cope with the own goal and to cope with the injury as it was obviously painful. That's the Eric we love!"

MAN OF THE MATCH: MARCUS RASHFORD

Marcus Rashford returned to the Manchester United starting line-up in style on Saturday afternoon, scoring twice inside the first 25 minutes to set his side up for an eventual 2-1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool.

The 20-year-old striker was subsequently crowned Man of the Match by United fans on Twitter, after receiving a massive 81 per cent of the votes. Two team-mates who helped to keep the visitors' lively attack at bay, left-back Ashley Young (16 per cent) and centre-back Chris Smalling (3 per cent), were also nominated.

Reflecting on the victory, Rashford told Sky Sports: "These games are always big games. It's going to be tight for second position and we want to make sure we get that spot so it was an important win today."

When asked about his recent run of not being selected for the first XI, the youngster said: "I think it's partly about being patient but that's football.

"You have to be ready when your chance comes. The whole team have been working hard, every day in training, so when moments like this happen, it's not a surprise."

United's first goal was netted with a ferocious shot across Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius from the left-hand side of the box but Marcus was modest about the lead-up to his amazing finish.

"I think my first touch was a bad touch, I couldn't finish it in my stride so I had to revive it, recover it with my second touch and the rest of it was quite simple," said Rashford.

"Scoring the first goal gave me the confidence to do more and for the second one, the ball fell to me and I just put it in as well. With the confidence I was feeling throughout the game, I was sure it was going to go in so I just took my time."

After his two additions to the scoresheet, Rashford's name entered the notebook of referee Craig Pawson for an exuberant but late challenge on Liverpool midfielder James Milner, and he admitted that his manager Jose Mourinho warned him during the interval to calm down.

"I think I had to do it myself a little bit in the first half," added Marcus. "It was one of those moments where I had to try to relax and just play the game."

Although Rashford was later substituted to remove the risk of a red card, it was still a brilliant performance from the Mancunian and he was pleased to learn that England manager Gareth Southgate had been in the Old Trafford stands to witness it with the World Cup finals now just four months away.

"I didn't know he was here," said United's match-winner. "It's nice that he was there to watch but there's a lot of players in contention and it's good that he's watching everyone."

Suporter MU-Liverpool Bentrok Saat Nobar di Cikokol, Didamaikan Polisi
Ahmad Bil Wahid - detikNews
