MATCH PREVIEW: UNITED V MANCHESTER CITY

So, two games, two wins... That's right, following back-to-back victories over LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake during Tour 2017, presented by Aon, Manchester United return to action against more familiar opponents on Thursday (20 July). The clash against Manchester City at the 71,795-capacity NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas is significant for a number of reasons. Not only does it represent a great chance for Jose Mourinho's men to gauge their pre-season progress against a Premier League side, it will be the first derby played outside of the UK, and United's first game in this summer's International Champions Cup. Kick-off for this highly anticipated match is scheduled for 20:30 local time (02:30 BST on Friday 21 July).

How can I watch it? Fans who subscribe to the club’s MUTV app or online at the recently launched mutv.com will have access to watch all of the team’s pre-season games. With no extra cost to subscribers, fans can watch all seven of United’s tour games live. The app is available to download in over 160 countries across the world - check it out via the Apple or Google Play app stores, or subscribe online at mutv.com.

What happened in our previous games? Well, as mentioned, preparations have been going according to plan for United so far. Following a comfortable 5-2 win over LA Galaxy in California last weekend, the Reds secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Real Salt Lake in Utah on Monday, with Romelu Lukaku scoring his first goal for the club. As well as our new additions, fans were also afforded a first look at the new adidas home and away kits for 2017/18, with fans sharing their matchday photos on social media using #UnitedInRed . As Tour 2017 picks up pace in week two, positive results against MLS opposition have set the Reds up nicely for games against City, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Any team news? Following that win over Real Salt Lake, Mourinho provided an update on Juan Mata and Matteo Darmian, who were forced off after suffering knocks during the game. "Mata has a big ankle but I hope it is nothing important. A few days, a week, probably," he said. "Darmian's problem is not an important one." And indeed, Darmian trained on Tuesday. In both of United's pre-season matches so far, the boss has opted to change his side at half-time and, asked if he will continue to do so, he replied: "No, but I will try to go for 60/30 and some players can play 60 minutes against City and then they will play 30 minutes against Real Madrid and vice versa. I will try the same, I will try to give minutes to everybody because it's an important thing." Whether Mourinho chooses to play with a back three or a back four (both of which have been trialled in America) remains to be seen.

What about our opponents? Good question. Thursday's match will actually be our neighbours' first of the summer; the Blues are set for a four-game pre-season schedule ahead of the new Premier League campaign, having trained for a week back in Manchester. Summer signings Ederson and Kyle Walker were part of the squad that travelled to America on Monday and could feature in the game, while fellow new addition Bernardo Silva has been allowed extra time off after representing Portugal at the Confederations Cup.

Aren't we wearing a special kit?
We are indeed. In fact, both sets of players will wear shirts featuring Manchester’s iconic worker bee, following May's terrorist attack in the city. After the match, both clubs will make the match-worn shirts available for fans to purchase, via auction, with all proceeds going to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. Symbolising the industrial heritage of Manchester and its people, the worker bee has been an emblem since the Victorian era and was adopted into the city’s coat of arms in 1842.

TWITTER LAUNCH WORKER BEE EMOJI

A special worker bee emoji is now live on Twitter ahead of Manchester United's tour match against Manchester City on Thursday.

The emoji launch builds on the announcement that both clubs will wear shirts featuring Manchester's worker bee symbol during the friendly in Houston, to honour the victims of May's terror attack in the city.

Fans can include the emoji in their tweets by using either of the following hashtags, which automatically trigger the bee emblem: #ACityUnited or #ManchesterDerby .

Thursday's fixture will be the first Manchester derby to take place outside of the UK. Both clubs will make their match-worn shirts available for fans to purchase, via auction, with all proceeds going to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.

JOSE PLAYS DOWN DERBY RIVALRY IN HOUSTON

Jose Mourinho has played down the rivalry with Manchester City ahead of the International Champions Cup match in Houston, as well as his own alleged discord with Pep Guardiola.

The Reds and Blues will meet at the NRG Stadium in the first-ever Manchester derby held outside of the UK. While the fixture is historically associated with tenacious competition and pride, the manager sees this outing in the USA as just another game to prepare for the 2017/18 season.

“For me it is a competitive training session that you try to win but it is not the most important thing,” Jose explained at a pre-match press conference in Texas. “We had two matches against MLS teams, now it is time to raise the level and now we get three of the best teams in Europe [City, Real Madrid, Barcelona].

“I don't know the way they will face the game, if they want to win the tournament, the derby, I don't know, but I know what I want – that is to give minutes to my players, to try to improve, to make mistakes, to repeat exercises from training, to stop those mistakes, to make the two new players try to understand the team-mates and for the team-mates to understand them.

“There is always a little bit of rivalry, a little bit of an extra ingredient, but for me it is a friendly. I am not going to jump to celebrate goal, or cry after any goal we concede. It is preparation.”

One journalist at the press conference asked Mourinho if he was surprised his much-reported 'rivalry’ with Guardiola was so cordial throughout last season, in comparison to their time together managing in Spain while in charge of La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“It was not a surprise for me,” Jose stated. “It was a surprise for the people that were selling the rivalry. We worked together for three years [at Barcelona], we shared a changing room, we were laughing and smiling with victories, and crying with defeats. For three years we defended the same club and our relationship was so good for these three years.

“After that he became Barcelona manager and I was Real Madrid manager in a very specific moment of both clubs, where one was the top club in Europe and the other one was a giant in trouble.

"The fight in a country like Spain became the fight of two clubs because the distance to the others is huge and the competition was all about us. It happened. When Pep came to England I was absolutely sure that with the type of competition we have in England, I was sure that it was not about United and City, or Mourinho and Pep. I am sorry if you are disappointed.”

Manchester City fans forced to subscribe to MUTV to watch United derby in Houston on Friday

* MUTV is the only rights holder in the UK for the Manchester derby
* The clash in Houston is the first derby to be played on foreign soil
* City fans have little choice but to pay the monthly subscription of £7

Manchester City fans will have to subscribe to MUTV if they want to watch the Manchester derby in Houston on Friday.

United’s in-house TV station is the only rights holder in the UK and Ireland for the first derby to be played on foreign soil – meaning that City fans will have little choice but to pay the monthly subscription of £7 if they want to tune in.

City included the information on their website telling fans how they could watch the game.

Manchester City fans must subscribe to MUTV if they want to watch the derby in Houston

The article was later taken down following criticism from some angry supporters.

The two teams play in the International Champions Cup in Houston’s NRG Arena in the early hours of Friday morning, a year after their meeting in Beijing was scrapped because of the state of the pitch at the Bird’s Nest Stadium.

United have won their two friendly games, against LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, but this will be City’s first game on tour.

Tour 2017, presented by Aon | NRG Stadium | Att: 67,401 | Scorers: Lukaku 37, Rashford 39

MATCH SUMMARY
Manchester United claimed a 2-0 victory over Manchester City in the first-ever derby on foreign soil as Tour 2017, presented by Aon, continued in winning fashion for the Reds.

Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford were once again in fine goalscoring form and their first-half strikes, in quick succession, were enough to seal derby bragging rights.

Jose Mourinho’s men were at it from the off with Ander Herrera taking aim early on, before further shots followed from outside the area as the Reds looked to test new City goalkeeper Ederson.

David De Gea had to be alert at the other end too with Sterling twice being denied, before Chris Smalling made a fantastic double block from Patrick Roberts and Sterling again.

United made the breakthrough eight minutes from half-time as Lukaku latched on to a fine Paul Pogba through ball, beating Ederson to it, before finishing brilliantly from the tightest of angles. Two minutes later, Rashford doubled the advantage, firing home after good work from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Changes aplenty followed for both sides at the break but the Reds still kept up the pressure on City’s goal. Rashford went for the spectacular, forcing Ederson to palm the ball over his crossbar. Lukaku headed wide from the corner and soon after smacked a shot against the woodwork.

The Reds survived a scare 14 minutes from the end when Romero got caught out of his goal as he came for a cross, but Phil Foden’s attempted lob sailed over the bar.

Second-half substitute Phil Jones was denied by an incredible triple save by Ederson from a corner late on, but by then the game was already won and derby bragging rights belonged to United.

TALKING POINT - WHO WILL SCORE MORE?
Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford have started pre-season on fire and the question now is who will finish Tour 2017 as top scorer? Lukaku opened the proceedings against City after his big mate Paul Pogba curled a sublime pass over the top for the Belgian whose pace, power and precision resulted in a second strike in two games. Marcus Rashford looked equally as dangerous in attack and found the net just two minutes after Lukaku. The young forward spoke before the game about the relationship he is hoping to form with the new signing as a strike partner and it certainly bodes well to see how well both have started pre-season.

TRENDING TOPIC
United and City wore custom-made shirts that have the iconic Manchester worker bee image printed on the chest to honour the victims of May's terror attack in the city and Twitter was awash with the bee emoji which was triggered automatically by #ACityUnited , #MUTOUR or #ManchesterDerby . The special team shirts will now be auctioned and all proceeds will go to those affected by the Manchester Arena terror attack in May.

PRE-MATCH SHOW
It was quite a spectacle before kick-off when music superstar Drake led the teams out amid an impressive light show which featured both crests being beamed onto the pitch with the worker bee. Rival captains Vincent Kompany and Antonio Valencia were then joined by Houston Texans player J. J. Watt Houston to make the coin toss.

FIVE TALKING POINTS: UNITED 2 CITY 0

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...,257,4071,2549

The first Manchester derby outside of the UK was held in Houston, Texas, on Thursday night in the International Champions Cup. Here are five talking points to stem from the game…

1: RASHFORD AND LUKAKU UP FRONT
In the pre-match press conference, Jose Mourinho said Marcus Rashford can easily play up front with Romelu Lukaku and the boss duly named them both in the starting XI for the first time. They delivered the goods, too, producing excellent finishes to beat Ederson Moraes towards the end of the first half, putting the Reds 2-0 up at the break. Lukaku almost scored on 54 minutes as well, when his rocket-fuelled shot cannoned off the woodwork. Their clinical performances bode well for the season, easing any goal-scoring concerns following Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney’s departures earlier this summer.

2: MICKI LOOKS RAZOR SHARP
Henrikh Mkhitaryan told us this week his best United form is still to come, and it looks like he will produce it this season judging by his pre-season form. The popular Armenian scored in both games against the MLS teams LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, and he registered an eye-catching assist for Rashford’s first-half finish in Houston. A number of other forwards are also impressing at this early stage of 2017/18, including Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba, but this was another display of #MickiMagic .

3: DRAKE LED THE TEAMS OUT
The pre-match show was typically American, as a rousing rendition of the national anthem was followed by an elaborate lights show that beamed both club crests onto the pitch. Then, Canadian rapper Drake led the teams out of the tunnel dressed in a colourful outfit that only a hip hop star could pull off! Just to add some extra star power, NFL hero J.J. Watt performed the coin toss for the captains (see above).

4: HOUSTON IS RED
The NRG Stadium is a spectacular multi-purpose venue that can hold up to 72,220 fans at full capacity and on Thursday, with the roof closed and the air-conditioning on, it was filled with expectant football fans. Although we don’t have the exact figures, from the vantage point of the press box (at the top of the fourth tier) it looked like 70 per cent of the arena was filled with the red shirts of United. Nice!

5: SUPPORT FOR MANCHESTER
The most important talking point from Thursday night is that both United and City wore special-edition shirts bore the iconic Manchester worker bee image on the chest. The match jerseys will now be sold on eBay and all proceeds will go to those affected by the Manchester Arena terror attack in May. The presence of the bee on both shirts follows the launch of #ACITYUNITED as the Blue and Red halves of Manchester came together to pledge a £1 million joint donation to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.

Re: [2017 Pre Season] Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City

POGBA: WE ALWAYS WANT TO BEAT MAN CITY

Paul Pogba produced another excellent pre-season performance as United beat local rivals City 2-0 in the first-ever Manchester derby to be played outside the UK.

The Frenchman provided a superb assist for Romelu Lukaku to open the scoring late in the first half, ahead of Marcus Rashford doubling the lead two minutes later with another astute finish.

The Frenchman spoke to MUTV following the final whistle at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, to reflect on a third victory of Tour 2017, presented by Aon. Here’s what he had to say…

What are your thoughts on beating City and the performance?
"You know it is a derby. Whether it is a friendly game or not, you want to win against Manchester City and show that you are ready for the test. It is the third game today and we have to carry on like that. The winning mentality, we have to keep it."

This was the third match of the tour against quality opposition – how did you feel out there?
"Of course we felt much better. The legs are better for everyone. Now we have more minutes so we have to get ready. More and more we will push towards the league, and the European Super Cup game as well. We have to keep playing and getting more minutes to get fit."

Can you talk us through our second goal by Marcus Rashford?
"The second goal is very well played by Micki [Henrikh Mkhitaryan]. We had this counter attack a few times and the goal came easily. It is a great goal, great work by Micki like I said, and when Romelu has the ball on the left to keep Rashford free. He is alone in front of the keeper and he scores."

How important is it that our strikers are scoring goals on this tour?
"Last season we missed a lot of chances and we need to score goals. When we have chances we need to kill. A 1-0 win and three points are very important in the Premier League and we know that. So now we have to start scoring goals. We have done it today and we have to keep this mentality."

What happened with your chance to score in the second half?
"It was a nice chance for me. I didn't score, but I have to keep trying. You always say ‘shoot, shoot’. The ball came to me and I shot. It just touched the feet of the guy and I missed, but I will keep trying."

We enjoyed your dancing feet to keep the ball from Fernandinho…
"It was at the end and I wanted to keep the ball. Nobody was around so I just took him on. The most important thing is to not lose the ball and not let the team go into contact [situations]. So I took him on and crossed for the team."

You must hope that you won’t hit the bar so many times this season?
"Hopefully this season will be more on my side. But if I don't score and we still win then I will be the most happy."

Re: [2017 Pre Season] Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City

MOURINHO'S VIEWS ON DERBY WIN & TRANSFERS

Here are the main points from Jose Mourinho's post-match press conference and MUTV interview at NRG Stadium in Houston, following Manchester United's 2-0 win over Manchester City on Tour 2017, presented by Aon...

RESULT AND PERFORMANCE

"It was a very good training session. That is what we thought when we organised the pre-season. Two matches against MLS teams and then we move on to the best teams in the world. Obviously City are a better team with better players than the MLS teams. They demanded more from us, more intensity, more concentration, more quality defensively, more quality on the ball so it was a fantastic training session. They have very good players, they play quality football, we had to play well, especially when the game had more quality in the first half. It was a good intensity, the players are tired, I am really pleased and I am sure Pep [Guardiola] is the same. The most important thing is to give the players high quality training. The fans and the stadium are fantastic. Relevent [the tour promoters] gave us a very good surface. There are no injuries on either side. It's all good."

LUKAKU'S PACE, POWER AND FINISHING ABILITY

"And not just that, we also saw the team player that holds the ball, that waits for support, that allows the team to leave pressure zones and to keep possession in the opposition half. People look at goals and chances but I have a different perspective and I couldn't be happier with what he's doing. I couldn't be happier that we managed to sign him before the pre-season because in this 10 days of work and these minutes of football with the team-mates it's fantastic for their understanding."

RASHFORD ALSO LOOKING SHARP

"And it's good also to see them playing together which is perfectly possible. We have had three friendly matches and we play with three different systems. Today we played with a number 10 and we are working, we are developing the team."

BENEFITS OF EARLY SIGNINGS

"When I look to the team and when I look to Lukaku, Lindelof, I would like my squad to be here, my whole squad. If you manage to get one more player, I am not even crying for two, but if we can get one player as soon as possible because you can see the way Lindelof and Lukaku are in the team, with the understanding of the players - for example, Paul Pogba's pass for Lukaku, the way he waited for support."

PRE-SEASON GOING SO WELL

"The preparation is fantastic, I keep saying it. No mistakes by the organisations - Relevent and the club. The mistakes are zero, the quality of the work is high, the match intensity is high. Only one injury and it is small, it is not a big injury for Juan. Everything is going really well. It is 10 days of work and there is a long time to go. We have two more matches in the US and then we go to Europe. There are fantastic people in the group, the new guys feel at home immediately. Everything is going well."

CLEAN SHEET WAS ANOTHER POSITIVE

"Yes and there were a couple of good saves by David and by Sergio, which is also good."

CHANGES IN DEFENCE

"We played with two back fours. One in the first half and one in the second half. Just Valencia played a bit more because he didn't play much against Salt Lake. Against Real Madrid we will do the same. We are here to train and to give everybody time. In this game we played Eric with Jones, Smalling with Lindelof. The next game will be Lindelof with another one, and Bailly with another one. It is not [about] just good defending but [also keeping] possession. It is good. Everything is going okay for us."

WILL ANOTHER NEW PLAYER JOIN THE TOUR?

"I don't know, I don't know. I am not in control of that. The credit of Lukaku and Lindelof to be here on time, the credit is not mine, it is Ed Woodward and his team. I thank him for that fantastic work to bring us two very important players for us. But we need a bit more when you see the other teams in the Premier League, like Man City, Liverpool and West Ham, the way they get players, good players, important players. The champions have bought three fantastic experienced players. I am thinking about West Ham for the first match of the Premier League. They have got Joe Hart, Chicharito and Arnautovic. It looks like they are playing to win the Premier League too. The teams are fantastic in the market. I am waiting for a bit more."

PROVING HARD TO SIGN MORE PLAYERS QUICKLY

"Yes and other teams are finding that also. That is not me criticising or not understanding the difficulty of the situation. I understand. Unless you go to the clubs and accept immediately the price tag, it is not so easy to do that. We see that clubs don't want to negotiate. The market is open until 31 August but I like to work from day one. The difference between Lukaku arriving on day or 29 August is huge."

WHICH POSITION ARE YOU STILL LOOKING TO STRENGTHEN?

"I don't tell you. I am sorry."
