Football grounds in Turkey are notorious for their hostile and intimidating atmospheres, as United can testify after past trips to face Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. On Tuesday the Reds take on another Istanbul side, current Turkish champions Besiktas, with a determination to improve on previous results in the city where East meets West...

Galatasaray 0-0 United - Champions League second round, second leg, 03/11/93
The Reds were infamously greeted on arrival in Istanbul with “Welcome to Hell” banners, hospitably prepared by the fanatical Galatasaray support. On the pitch, United had to go for the win after a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford had given Galatasaray the initiative, with a place in the Champions League group stages up for grabs. The intimidating and deafening atmosphere in the Ali Sami Yen Stadium hindered the visitors however and when the goalless game boiled over at the final whistle, Eric Cantona saw red and several United players tangled with local police.

Galatasaray 0-0 United - Champions League phase one, match two, 28/09/94
After the experience of the previous year, the Reds understandably kept a low profile before the game, staying in the team hotel away from all the hullabaloo. The performance on the pitch was an improvement and United came close to snatching victory. Sir Alex was pleased with a point this time and said, “I felt it was a good, solid performance. The referee handled the situation very well.”

Fenerbahce 0-2 United - Champions League phase one, match three, 16/01/96
Perhaps the previous trips to Istanbul had prepared the Reds for the ‘friendly’ welcome at Ataturk airport. Two goals in five minutes just before the hour were enough for Sir Alex’s side to take all three points from Galatasray's arch-rivals Fenerbahce. Eric Cantona was the man of the moment, as he stepped back on Turkish soil for the first time since the angry scenes three years earlier. He set up the first goal for David Beckham before grabbing the winner moments later. However, two weeks later Fenerbahce ended United’s proud 40-year unbeaten home record in Europe.

Fenerbache 3-0 United - Champions League phase one, match six, 08/12/04
Sir Alex sent out a second-string side that included the likes of Liam Miller and Kieran Richardson after United had already qualified from Group D. Despite it being an inexperienced side the heavy defeat was not something that pleased the manager who saw his side lose for the first time in Turkey. Tuncay, once a reported Reds target, scored a hat-trick at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium, starting with a volley that crashed off the underside of Tim Howard's crossbar. United finished second in the group as a result and were then knocked out by Milan in the next round.

Well, tanah Turki sepertinya bukanlah tempat yg ramah bagi tim2 dari Inggris...

Besiktas terkenal dg supporter fanatikanya yg bernama :

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi.../Carsilogo.jpg

Semboyan mereka sangat dipenuhi dg pengaruh sejarah politik di Turki, di mana fans Besiktas bermusuhan dg aliran politik yg dianut kedua rivalnya di atas.....slogan mereka yg terkenal adalah :

“Çarşı, Atatürk hariç her şeye karşı!” ...(‘’Çarşı is against anything except Atatürk!”)

Ferguson ready for Gala 'racket'
sportinglife.com - September 15 2012

http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/wp-co...74-500x351.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing to meet Galatasaray next week with a renewed sense of focus - but he accepts it is the trip to Istanbul in November that will really get the juices flowing.

After last season's Champions League debacle, when Manchester United crashed out at the group stage for only the second time, Ferguson is determined not to get it wrong on this occasion.

Beating Galatasaray at Old Trafford would be the perfect start to a campaign that also features a second successive trip to Romania, this time to take on CFR Cluj, and also back-to-back encounters with Portugal's FC Braga.

But it is that trip to Turkey that revives all the memories.

In 1993, United were greeted by 'Welcome to Hell' banners at the Ali Sam Yen stadium. Amid chaotic scenes, Eric Cantona was sent off and Bryan Robson was hit over the head by a police truncheon as United were eliminated.

United have been back since, and Galatasaray have also changed stadiums, but Ferguson has never forgotten.

"Our fans don't need reminding about Galatasaray," he told MUTV.

"I remember our first game there, when we arrived at the airport and there were all these banners, 'Welcome to Hell'.

"Eric Cantona was sent off. Bryan Robson was hit by a policemen's truncheon. It was a nightmare.

"The one good thing about that game is that the atmosphere will be fantastic. The fans will be in the stadium from lunchtime, shouting, singing and bawling. They make such a racket."

Ferguson admits he knows little of Cluj, who gave Chelsea two tricky games in 2008 without managing a victory.

Braga are rather better known and by gatecrashing Portugal's elite, Ferguson expects them to be the greatest threat to a smooth progression into the knockout phase.

It was something United missed out on last term, winning just two of their six matches and losing their final group game in Basle when only a draw was required.

Ferguson is promising not to make the same mistakes again.

"You always have to respect your opponents in this situation," he said.

"Last year we were a bit careless with the group. It looked easy but didn't turn out that way so there will be no complacency this time.

"I will play my best team to make sure we qualify."

Whether Ferguson sticks to that promise is open to debate given the difficulty of the matches that follow European nights.

Next week for example, United visit Liverpool, whilst trips to Newcastle, Chelsea and Manchester City also come immediately after Champions League games.

It is hardly ideal, and Ferguson is acutely aware of the need to get his juggling right, at a time when injuries have caused major problems for the Old Trafford outfit anyway.

"The great part of European football is that you have different experiences all the time," he said.

"My dream as a young coach with Aberdeen was to play at places like the Bernabeu and Nou Camp and Bayern Munich.

"Since they changed the European Cup to the Champions League we have played all the best teams in Europe.

"From time to time you get the odd situation, like last year, when we played another Romanian team and Basle, they surprise you in terms of their quality.

"You cannot take it for granted now. You have to dismiss the fact we are not in the Nou Camp, or the Bernabeu, or Bayern Munich.

"We are playing teams who will be desperate to beat us."

Giggs' Turkish memories

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/A9A177...n=0,26,768,310

Ryan Giggs admits his first experience of playing against Galatasaray - Wednesday's Champions League opponents - is one that will stay with him forever.

The Reds were famously welcomed 'to hell' on arrival in Turkey in November 1993 on their first ever trip to Galatasaray. The game ended goalless, with United being eliminated from the competition on away goals following the 3-3 draw at Old Trafford two weeks earlier, but the night will forever be remembered for the raucous home fans and altercation between Bryan Robson and the Turkish police.

"I remember it [the whole experience] vividly. It's one of those memories that will always stick with you," he told ManUtd.com. "When we arrived at the airport, there were all the banners and thousands of fans screaming at you.

"There were things thrown at us when we were driving away on the coach, fans outside the hotel chanting all night making sure we didn't get any sleep and people phoning the hotel rooms. It had everything.

"But they were a good team and a good club. It is a fantastic game to be involved in, especially away from home. It is an atmosphere a lot of the lads won't have witnessed before.

"The atmosphere back then was something I tried to enjoy as much as I could," he adds. "The manager told us to go on the pitch and sample the atmosphere. The fans had been in the ground for hours and hours so it was buzzing 90 minutes before kick-off.

"We were stood in the middle of the pitch watching the fans chant. It was one stand to another. It was a brilliant atmosphere if I am honest but obviously the game didn't pan out the way we wanted.

They were a good team then and they will be a good team now."

The Reds kick-off this season's Champions League campaign at Old Trafford on Wednesday night against the Turkish side, with Giggs insisting only victory will do.

"We need to win our home games and perform at home," he insists. "We usually say 10 or more points gets you through so if you win your home games and try and draw away from home, you are usually through.

"We didn't manage it last year and didn't perform at Old Trafford the way we have done in the past. We want to try and rectify that. "

Five summer signings have bolsted both numbers and quality in the squad with the veteran midfielder backing Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa to shine in Europe.

"Robin has the experience of playing in Europe with Arsenal. The goals he has got will hopefully give us that extra edge this season.

"Shinji is that kind of player who will thrive in Europe, where possession is key. He keeps the ball. He gets into positions where he is hard to pick up. I am sure they will both be good additions."
