Van Gaal's guys: Frans Hoek

Widely acknowledged as one of the best goalkeeper coaches in the game, with a proven track record of developing talent,*Frans Hoek*has a fascinating philosophy for working with up-and-coming youngsters and established performers.

An innovator and teacher, the Dutchman has been a technical instructor for UEFA since the mid-1990s and is a trusted colleague of Louis van Gaal, working with the successful Netherlands squad that went through the 2014 World Cup qualifying programme unbeaten.

Edwin van der Sar, one of the greatest keepers ever to represent Manchester United, was schooled by Hoek at Ajax and other big names such as Vitor Baia and Victor Valdes have also improved markedly under his tutelage.

The change in the passback rule in 1992 led to a seismic shift in the role of a no.1 and this has shaped the ideals preached by the Hoorn-born coach. "The task of the goalkeeper is now a lot more with the ball than without it," he said. "Goalkeepers should be more and more integrated in the team. They have to perform with the team against other players and need preparing for that."

The tactical system employed by the overall side is key to the training of the keeper and Hoek’s method focuses on the individual’s development within that framework, ensuring David De Gea’s importance to the Reds is likely to become even more crucial.

Hans-Jorg Butt, who worked under Hoek at Bayern Munich, explained: "It’s the way of the future. The goalkeeper is included in the team tactics and is no longer isolated from the rest of the team. Training with him is very like being in a match. You’re never just dealing with practice shots."

After 12 years as a keeper with FC Volendam in his native Holland, Hoek’s impressive coaching CV includes Ajax, Barcelona, Poland and Bayern Munich and he has worked with Sir Bobby Robson, Jose Mourinho and Leo Beenhakker, as well as van Gaal.

Hoek striving for perfection

Frans Hoek claims Manchester United's new coaching team are always seeking perfection.

The goalkeeper coach worked with Louis van Gaal at Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the Netherlands and enjoys a fabulous relationship with the manager.

In an exclusive interview with MUTV, the 57-year-old touched upon his philosophy and methods that have proved so successful over the years.

"It's like we both are searching for perfection," he explained. "For goalkeeper coaches, this is more normal than regular coaches as we know, as a goalkeeper, when you make a mistake, it could be very painful. So we try to work to perfection - to make as few mistakes as possible. What I find with Louis is we're both physical educators and have Masters degrees in Physical Education so we hit each other there as well.

"We are not like former players who did not have a University education as well, so we meet each other there and, as well as looking forward to the feeling of being a player, we also have scientific backgrounds that we really use in teaching and developing and stuff like that.

"We complement each other in the things we do and that means working with Louis is always working at the highest level, always going for the highest prizes, and for the best clubs in the world. It feels comfortable. It feels good.*

"We still develop every day," he insisted. "There is no routine. [There's] no 'we did it like that so we do it again'. Every day is a challenge and completely different. I haven't seen two days the same as long as I've worked with him. You cannot be in a routine - you have to develop.

"You look at what happens to the club and look to the players and their way of playing and how to influence that. I can only say what works is he asks me all the time and I say 'yes'. We have a very good co-operation and understanding together.

"One of the things I like as well in that co-operation is we always strive for a better way of doing it. The society is changing every day and we have to change with it. The players change too. The players you see now are not like the players of 10 years ago. So we have to look at it."

What can Manchester United expect from goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek?

Manchester United goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek has revealed how he and the new coaching team are striving for perfection at Old Trafford and he also spoke of his close relationship with manager Louis Van Gaal.

Hoek, who enjoyed a 12-year playing career in his native Holland with FC Volendam from 1973-1985, joined United this summer following Van Gaal’s appointment.

And Hoek is one of his compatriot’s trusted lieutenants having worked alongside Van Gaal at Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the Netherlands.

Speaking to the Official Manchester United website, Hoek touched upon his philosophy and association with Van Gaal, which has yielded many successes over the years:

“It’s like we both are searching for perfection. For goalkeeper coaches, this is more normal than regular coaches as we know, as a goalkeeper, when you make a mistake, it could be very painful. So we try to work to perfection – to make as few mistakes as possible. What I find with Louis is we’re both physical educators and have Masters degrees in Physical Education so we hit each other there as well.

“We are not like former players who did not have a University education as well, so we meet each other there and, as well as looking forward to the feeling of being a player, we also have scientific backgrounds that we really use in teaching and developing and stuff like that.”

Hoek has worked with some of the world’s best keepers, including Edwin van der Saar, Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina, and went on to explain how he is always learning and never shackled by repetition:

“We still develop every day. There is no routine. [There's] no ‘we did it like that so we do it again’. Every day is a challenge and completely different. I haven’t seen two days the same as long as I’ve worked with him. You cannot be in a routine – you have to develop.”

Hoek will work with David de Gea, who was United’s best player last season, and improved under former goalkeeping coach Chris Woods.

The Dutchman will be tasked with continuing to develop the Spaniard’s game, especially with regards to set pieces and anticipation, as this helps to relive the pressure on the defence.

United’s back line struggled last season but if Hoek can improve De Gea further, this will enable the rest of the defence to better adapt to Van Gaal’s new 3-5-2 system, which perfectly suits the Spaniard’s game given his excellent distribution.

Furthermore, in an article published earlier this year in the Manchester Evening News, the paper referenced an interview that Hoek gave to UEFA in 2012, where he spoke of his ideas and championed competition to push keepers on.

When addressing what made Valdes and Reina “exceptional” when they were both 16-year-olds at Barcelona, he said:

“For their age, they had like the perfect build physically,

“The second thing is they were incredibly ambitious, they were actually pushing each other to a very high level and they were very willing to improve themselves so at the moment I saw them, first of all I didn’t believe they were 16 years of age and secondly the way they were performing and presenting themselves – that was incredibly impressive.”

This gives hope to young goalkeepers Ben Amos and Sam Johnstone and from next season Vanja Milinkovic, with the Serbian recently acquired from FK Vojvodina.

The new coaching setup have a superb track record of nurturing and bringing young players through and following a dismal campaign last season, United fans have cause for optimism this year, especially given the impact the new staff have made in pre-season.

While some may argue that it’s only pre-season, Van Gaal and his team have entered Old Trafford with a very clear philosophy, ideology and system.

They have made an immediate and positive impression in just a few weeks at the club and it will be intriguing to see how the team and players develop over the course of the season.
