[Legend] Sir Bobby Charlton

Sir Bobby Charlton
ManUtd.com

Nobody embodies the values of Manchester United better than Sir Bobby Charlton. Having survived the trauma of Munich aged just 20, he played as if every game was for his fallen colleagues, recovering from his injuries to reach the pinnacle for both club and country.

In a 17-year playing career with United, he played a record 754 games, scoring 247 goals. It is unlikely his deeds will ever be matched. Although highly coveted by clubs across the country, the young Charlton, nephew of the great Newcastle striker Jackie Milburn, turned professional with United in October 1954, winning the FA Youth Cup in 1954, 1955 and 1956.

His league debut came on 6 October 1956 against Charlton at Old Trafford and the youngster made an immediate impact, scoring twice despite carrying an injury. “Mr Busby asked me if I was ok,” recalled Sir Bobby. “I actually had a sprained ankle, but I wasn’t going to admit to it and I crossed my fingers and said ‘yes’.”

Despite his dramatic bow, Charlton didn’t command a relatively regular place until the latter stages of the 1956/57 season, notching 10 goals as the Busby Babes won a first title. Competition for a first-team spot was intense, but a hat-trick against Bolton Wanderers in January 1958 certainly helped his cause, and Busby found it harder and harder to leave out the powerful young forward.

A month later Charlton scored twice in United’s 3-3 draw against Partizan Belgrade as the Babes sealed a place in the semi-finals of the European Cup. It was on their return that disaster struck, and Charlton was among those injured. His wounds were relatively minor, however, and he was back in action within a month.

Charlton proved an integral component of the post-Munich rebuilding, plying his trade across the field while the rest of the side was reconstructed. A permanent switch to a deep-lying
forward role brought the best from him, and he was vital as United won the league championships in 1965 and 1967.

Those successes flanked international glory with England. Shortly before the 1966 World Cup, Charlton was named Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year and European Footballer of the Year in quick succession. He went on to play a starring role as Alf Ramsey’s side won the tournament, scoring twice in the semi-final win over Portugal. Charlton went on to win 106 caps – three as captain - and is still England’s record goalscorer with 49 goals.

Although winning the World Cup is seen as the pinnacle of achievement in football, Charlton’s finest hour at club level came in May 1968 when he captained United to European Cup triumph. Sir Bobby scored twice in a 4-1 extra-time victory over Benfica at Wembley. For Charlton the victory capped the post-Munich rebuilding, and he famously missed the post-match celebrations – opting instead to conduct a solitary remembrance of absent friends.

Sir Bobby continued to entertain as part of the famed Best-Law-Charlton triumvirate before he retired in 1973. He spent two years as manager and player-manager at Preston North End before resigning in August 1975.

He briefly played for Waterford in the Republic of Ireland in 1976 before accepting a boardroom position at Wigan Athletic, where he took over as caretaker-manager during season 1982-83.

In June 1984 Charlton became a director of Manchester United, a position he still holds today. Already awarded the OBE and CBE, he became Sir Bobby Charlton in June 1994. A respected ambassador for his club, English football and the game across the world football, he is a figurehead: a link with the club’s past, present and future.

Charlton tells United: Win the title back
MEN, James Robson - July 31, 2010

Sir Bobby Charlton and Javier Hernandez

Sir Bobby Charlton has warned Manchester United that second best will not be accepted.

The Old Trafford legend insists that Sir Alex Ferguson must reclaim the Premier League title after Chelsea broke their three-year stranglehold on the trophy last season.

United had to watch as Carlo Ancelotti’s side pipped them to the post by one point in the league and then went on to complete the double by winning the FA Cup.

It has left Ferguson playing catch-up – and United’s bid to win a record 19th title will be made all the more difficult with mega-rich City tearing up the transfer market in a bid to become English football’s superpower.

United supporters are fearing a shift in the balance of power with Roberto Mancini being given the financial muscle by City’s Abu Dhabi owners to eclipse their red rivals.

Charlton says it is crucial that United reassert their dominance in the Premier League – and anything other than the championship trophy will be failure.

“The plan is always to try to win the league,” he said. “It’s the hardest thing to do. If you do that no one can argue when you say you’re the best.

“Second best is not good enough and it never has been.

“But we have so many matches, we play an unbelievable amount of matches at high intensity as well, but that’s not an excuse. Last year we were a couple of points short and Alex is well aware of that.”

Ferguson has so far opted not to throw huge amounts of cash at United’s failure to win a record fourth title last season – instead putting his faith in his latest generation young stars.

Hopes

Mexican international, Javier Hernandez, and Federico Macheda impressed during the club’s pre-season tour of the US, while the Da Silva twins are expected to play a more prominent role next season.

There are also high hopes for £10m defender, Chris Smalling, midfielder, Darron Gibson, and French winger, Gabriel Obertan.

Ultimately, United’s strength in depth was found wanting at the crucial stage of last season, when Wayne Rooney’s ankle injury at the end of March saw their Champions League and title challenges hit the dirt.

But Ferguson is convinced his starlets can emulate the success of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and the Neville brothers by forming the nucleus of title-winning sides for many years to come.

And Charlton believes they will learn from the mistakes of last season.

“We’ve got younger players,” he said. “But what makes me feel good is that a lot of the younger players are that little bit better this year. I think we will have a really good go at winning the championship again.”

Next Wednesday United face a League of Ireland Select XI before taking on Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Bobby Charlton: Fergie Hampir Dipecat

Pele, Beckenbauer, Charlton miss FIFA meeting

ZURICH - The FIFA task force aimed at finding ways of making football more exciting for the 2014 World Cup got off to an inauspicious start on Tuesday when Pele, Bobby Charlton and Franz Beckenbauer all missed the first meeting.

FIFA said Beckenbauer, the task force's chairman, was suffering from health problems and England World Cup winner Charlton told the ruling body a week ago he would not be able to take part. Pele had a private commitment.

"It was unfortunate they could not be here but football was well represented," FIFA president Sepp Blatter told reporters.

"Pele is the king and the king has his own agenda.

Former Zambia forward Kalusha Bwalya, who chaired the meeting in Beckenbauer's absence, said the committee had agreed to propose allowing a fourth substitution during extra time.

It will also suggest an end to the so-called triple punishment situation when a player denies the opposing team a goalscoring chance in the penalty area.

Under present rules, the player concedes a penalty, gets sent off and misses the next game through suspension but the task force suggested this punishment should be reduced to just a penalty.

Blatter said FIFA would also look at ways of forcing players to improve their behaviour on the pitch as well as on the sidelines.

"A lot was said about the way the players behaved at the last World Cup final but if you look at the team benches, one has to say this was not the best public relations exercise for discipline and respect," he said.

The 22-man group was formed as a response by FIFA to the drab, defensive football and controversial refereeing decisions which marred last year's World Cup in South Africa.

Other proposals included the changing the rule over interfering with play at offside decisions and there was a general agreement on the need to professionalise referees.

Former France international Christian Karembeu, Spain's Fernando Hierro and former Brazil captain Cafu are also part of the group.

It is due to produce a report for FIFA's annual Congress next year.

wah-wah ada apa ini, apa udah mulai ga percaya sama FIFA :amazed:
