World Cup winner and former Manchester United star Nobby Stiles MBE has reassured fans about his health after suffering a "very minor" stroke.

The England hero of 1966 spent two days in hospital last week but has been recovering at home since the weekend, his agent Terry Baker said.

Stiles, 68, who also won two league titles and a European Cup during an 11-year career with Manchester United, was hospitalised after a period of "disorientation" which has been diagnosed as a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA).

Baker said: "The doctors have described it as a very minor stoke and nowhere near as serious as some stokes can be.

"When I spoke to him this morning he told me he had suffered a moment of disorientation.

"He joked that both of us have been having moments of disorientation for the last 30 years."

Baker said Stiles has seen a cardiovascular consultant and is expected to undergo surgery in the next few weeks.

"There is going to be a small operation to put it right," the agent added.

"In the meantime, he's at home and in good spirits.

"But he's had to cancel a number of engagements for the time being."

A get well soon note to England's World Cup winner Nobby Stiles after he suffers minor stroke

Nobby Stiles, 68, is recovering at home after a ‘very minor stroke’ and here STEVE CURRY sends the 1966 World Cup winner a personal get-well message

Dear Nobby,

It’s that time of year again, a World Cup in progress, and expectations sky-high with lots of debate about holding midfielders.

In ’66 we didn’t use those fancy phrases, did we? We called you the plug, a little chap guarding those two defenders Bobby and Jack behind you.

Our generation remember you for the toothless grin. They didn’t see the way you cemented the spirit of the lads. They saw you as a little terrier, a no-fuss player who won the ball and delivered it to those lads with more artistic skills.

Not many remember that you played for England schoolboys because you were creative, not because you could tackle. Like a lot of people, Bobby (Charlton) believed you were the most underrated player in the side. But you did say that if you weren’t getting booed then you weren’t doing your job.

I think you would agree your best game in the ’66 competition was in the semi against Portugal when you played the great Eusebio out of the game, not by tackling him but by getting between him and the goal and making him play off his weaker left foot.

It made us smile when you said you could knock over bigger opponents because your height gave you better balance. But you were a pussycat off the field.

And what about you being so accident-prone? Remember when you and Bobby had a shunt in your car and the only injury you got was cutting your forehead on the other driver’s head as you both bent down to inspect the damage.

My favourite memory will be your jig of delight in front of an ecstatic Wembley crowd when a lot of us there were in tears at winning the trophy.

I hear you’ve been off colour, Nobby, and we all hope you recover soon and hopefully see England in the final again.

It’s been a long time.

Regards,
Steve

Stiles auctions off '66 collection
TheSUN - 14 Sep 2010

ENGLAND World Cup hero Nobby Stiles is selling a collection of memorabilia from his glittering football career.

The 45 items including his medal and cap from England's '66 campaign are expected to reach hundreds of thousands of pounds when they go under the hammer.

Stiles, 68, who suffered a stroke in June, said: "It was always my intention to leave the entire collection to my children.

"But I have three sons - how do you fairly divide up this sort of collection between them?

"They have each selected some pieces they would like to keep for themselves."

The tough-tackling midfielder and Old Trafford legend won two league titles and a European Cup during an 11-year career with Manchester United.

He added: "I'm as patriotic as the next Englishman and will always cherish my memories and the friendships I made in my playing days, but at this stage of my life I would rather have some control over the distribution of my memorabilia and know that my family will benefit."

The sale includes Stiles's 1966 World Cup Winner's Medal (estimate: £100,000-150,000), a 1966 World Cup Cap (estimate: £20,000-30,000), his 1968 European Cup Winner's Medal (estimate: £20,000-30,000) and the blue Manchester United shirt worn by him in the 1968 European Cup Final against Benfica (estimate: £15,000-20,000).

Also going on sale is Alan Ball's 1966 World Cup Final shirt (estimate: £20,000-30,000) which Stiles acquired from his team-mate as a swap after the match.

David Convery, from Convery Auctions, said: "The Nobby Stiles Collection represents English football's greatest period in both the domestic and European arena."

Born Norbert Peter Stiles in Collyhurst, Manchester, in 1942, Nobby was awarded the MBE in 2000 for his part in England's 4-2 victory over West Germany on July 30, 1966.

The sale will take place at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh on Wednesday, October 27, at midday, and the collection will be on view from Monday, October 25.

Jawara Inggris Lelang Medalinya

(crf/bbc/row)
