United threw down the title gauntlet to rivals Manchester City on Sunday with a 2-0 win over QPR, a result which temporarily lifted the Reds above Roberto Mancini’s men in the Barclays Premier League. Goals from Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick sealed the win at Loftus Road, the Reds’ sixth on the road this season, to provide a perfect start to the busy festive calendar. Fulham have endured some indifferent form under Martin Jol this season, picking up just 18 points from 16 top-flight games. The Cottagers did record a positive result on Saturday, though, beating lowly Bolton 2-0 at Craven Cottage.

Ins and outs
The injury crisis that has engulfed the Carrington treatment*room is finally easing following an unparalleled run of knocks. Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez were surprise inclusions at QPR, while Sir Alex Ferguson has also confirmed Rafael’s return to training and it won’t be too long before his twin Fabio, Tom Cleverley and Anderson are back in contention. Fulham’s main strength resides in central areas and more specifically, in the boots of Clint Dempsey and serial bogeyman Danny Murphy. Although, given the context of Wednesday’s match, a more influential figure might be defensive colossus Brede Hangeland. The Norwegian defender has been a revelation since arriving in London in 2008, yielding the perfect combination of silk and steel to help the Cottager’s cement top flight status. His talents have not gone unnoticed, either, and Arsenal have long been touted as potential suitors.

Sub-plots
This midweek clash should be an enjoyable experience for Chris Smalling, who hopes to feature against his former employers. The versatile defender made 19 appearances for the Lilywhites before joining United at the beginning of last season and has since enjoyed invaluable experience in the first-team, as well as receiving several call-ups with England.
