Quote:

How did each player fare in the season opener at The Hawthorns? Here's our assessment...

David de Gea
Will feel he should have kept out Shane Long's equaliser but showed great composure to recover and survive a physical onslaught from the Baggies. Made a great stop to deny Paul Scharner and clawed away an awkward Somen Tchoyi cross that deflected goalwards. Stood up to everything asked of him in the second half.

Chris Smalling
Slotted in smoothly and looks like he's been playing right-back for years. Gets forward to help the attack and, although he was guilty of a couple of stray passes after the break, this was a formidable display - particularly considering the youthful look to the defence at the end.

Nemanja Vidic
Captain courageous was unable to shrug off an injury but manfully battled on before making way for Jonny Evans seven minutes after the interval. Unflappable under pressure, he led by example and dealt with the threat posed by Long and Tchoyi.

Rio Ferdinand
Took over the armband from Vidic but suffered a similar fate when he hobbled off soon afterwards. Handled the physical presence of Tchoyi and read the game superbly. Was under pressure but answered all the questions posed by the home side.

Fabio
Tested but stuck to his guns and emerged as arguably the Reds' top defender on the day. Deflected a Reid shot wide and snapped into tackles but survived one nervous headed clearance that was volleyed off target by Chris Brunt.

Nani
After a matchwinning display at Wembley, he was unable to repeat the Community Shield heroics but remains a major threat. Shot over the bar on a couple of occasions in the first half and sent a header wide from a Fabio cross as the Reds hunted for a winner.

Tom Cleverley
The talented youngster makes this midfield lark look easy. Always has time and makes space, keeping his passes neat, tidy and accurate. One agile interception was a highlight and his economical use of the ball was a contributory factor to this excellent result. A superb first league start for United.

Anderson
A driving display with a really positive range of passing, particularly out to the flanks. Influential, particularly in the opening hour, one skilful dribble summed up his growing confidence. Even filled in as an emergency centre-back at one stage, to again show increasing responsibility and maturity.

Ashley Young
A star all afternoon, who ran the defence ragged at times. Capable of supplying crosses that can't be defended against, his flicks and first-time touches were also excellent. Picked up an assist for the Wayne Rooney goal and is even claiming the second goal for himself, which came after a positive burst past Brunt and cross which went in off Steven Reid.

Wayne Rooney
Roy Hodgson admitted his side struggled to cope with the England striker who repeated last season's feat of opening the scoring at The Hawthorns. It was an assured finish, after a beautiful touch to Young in the build-up, to get him off the mark quickly for the campaign. Always a main man for the Reds, he had another couple of attempts but, to his credit, also defended admirably.

Danny Welbeck
Made an impudent start with an early backheel and his tracking back meant United were defending from the front. The leggy youngster has added strength to his game this term and this was a decent shift to reward the manager's confidence in him.

Substitutes

Jonny Evans (for Vidic, 52)
Strong and purposeful, he filled in effortlessly for the captain and won a couple of important headers - including one when Ferdinand had just departed prior to a dangerous free-kick.

Dimitar Berbatov (for Welbeck, 65)
Added grace and guile to the frontline and it was his lay-off that ultimately led to the winner. An astute front-runner, he gave United a fresh dimension.

Phil Jones (for Ferdinand, 75)
Nerveless and unflappable, he made one important tackle on Long as he bore down on goal. Completed a very young back-five for the closing quarter of an hour.

How did each player fare in the 3-0 win over Spurs? Here's our assessment...

David De Gea
Cool and composed throughout the first half and made a number of solid stops from distance. There were one or two jittery moments in the second period but nothing too serious. Fabulous distribution throughout.

Chris Smalling
He prefers playing in the middle but Smalling's confidence on the ball makes him a natural on the right, too. Never looked troubled against Spurs and was brave in a number of aerial challenges. Involved in United's opening goal.

Phil Jones
A strong candidate for Man of the Match, the 19-year-old was fearless at the back and looked as if he'd been playing at this level for a decade. Nevermind one for the future: Phil Jones has already arrived.

Jonny Evans
Led by example at the back, roaring into tackles and organising his fellow defenders. Extremely composed on the ball and often outfoxed Tottenham attackers with his positional play.

Patrice Evra
Strode forward as often as possible before Aaron Lennon pegged him back a little, United's captain for the night was solid throughout. Showed off his incredible vertical jump on more than one occasion.

Nani
Whipped in plenty of dangerous balls between goalkeeper and central defenders in the first half but nobody could capitalise on his expert delivery. Showed for the ball at all times and linked well with his fellow attackers.

Tom Cleverley
Not as dominant as he was in the second half of the Community Shield or at West Brom last weekend, but the youngster was again impressive and crossed for United's opening goal.

Anderson
A lung-busting display for 90 minutes from the Brazilian. Ando saw plenty of the ball - often winning it back himself in midfield - and used it wisely all evening. Added another goal to his steadily growing tally.

Ashley Young
Grew in stature as the game wore on, although he was hardly quiet in the first half. Ashley seems to be relishing life at Old Trafford, particularly his link-up play with Wayne Rooney, and is playing with plenty of confidence.

Wayne Rooney
Scored United's third goal with three minutes to play to cap another strong performance. Dropped deep to boost his involvement and seemed to have more impact after the interval. Pulled the strings, subtly.

Danny Welbeck
Netted the Reds' first with a fine glancing header and then teed up Anderson for the second with a sublime backheel. All this after an opening 45 minutes that never really sparked into life. In the end, a night to remember.

Substitutes

Ryan Giggs (for Cleverley, 81)
Injected experience into midfield to help see out the game and ended up providing a wonderful cross for Rooney to head home on 87 minutes. Still a top talent.

Javier Hernandez (for Welbeck, 81)
Just failed to reach a teasing cross near the end but otherwise had minimal involvement during his late cameo.

Ji-sung Park (for Young, 81)
Produced some good skill on a driving run into the penalty area but scuffed his shot and the ball trickled through to Brad Friedel.

‎>> Rooney Soal Target MU Samai Level Barca <<

Player Rating
UEFA European Champions League
Benfica1 - Manchester United1
Star man: Anders Lindegaard

MEN, James Robson - Wednesday 14 September, 19:45

Anders Lindegaard - 9
Could do nothing about Cardozo's goal, but otherwise looked impressive in the heat of the Stadium of Light. World class save to deny Nolito and another good stop to give Fergie a dilemma against Chelsea on Sunday

Fábio - 7

Couldn't get forward as often as he would like with Benfica giving the Brazilian plenty to think about defensively. Replaced by Jones as the pressure mounted late on

Chris Smalling - 7
Back in the centre of defence he had his hands full with Benfica's mobile attack of Cardozo, Aimar Gaitan. Endured some uncomfortable moments in the first half, but generally looked solid

Jonny Evans - 6
Turned too easily by Cardozo for Benfica's opening goal, but collected himself well to keep the impressive Portuguese side at bay when they pushed for a winner

Patrice Evra - 7
Also culpable for Cardozo's goal, taking too long to get back to cover Evans. But became an increasing attacking threat as United began to press in the second half

Darren Fletcher - 6
Good to see the Scot back in United's starting XI. Got stronger as the match went on, but noticable that the champions' midfield lacked the pace and energy of the opening weeks of the season

Ryan Giggs - 8
Memorable strike moved him past Denis Law as United's second all-time leading goal-scorer in Europe with 29 goals behind Ruud van Nistelrooy. Might have scored a second, but for a great save from Artur

Antonio Valencia - 6
United's main attacking outlet in the first half, but crossing often let him down. Cross after the break deserved a goal and produced crucial tackle on Gaitan when Benfica were 1-0 up

Michael Carrick - 7
Had a crucial role to play with Aimar roaming from deep. Stuggled to keep hold of him in the first half, but stamped his authority later in the match with some impressive interceptions

Park Ji-Sung - 6
Ferguson turned to the trusted South Korean on the European stage because of his discipline in tight matches like this. But could not provide the attacking invention United have enjoyed so far this season

Wayne Rooney - 6
A quiet night for the man of the moment, but he had a difficult role as United's lone front man against Benfica's imposing central defence - particularly Luisao

Substitutes
Phil Jones - 6

(for Fabio, 78) Champions League debut and the most impressive of United's subs

Nani - 5
(for Valencia, 69) The winger couldn't make any difference

Javier Hernandez - 5
(for Fletcher, 69) Brought on to try to steal the points, but fed off scraps

Reds earn Bilbao tie

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/3C2E95...n=0,60,550,265

United's 3-2 aggregate win against Ajax, sealed despite a 2-1 defeat against the Dutch side at Old Trafford on Thursday night, has set up a Europa League last 16 clash with Athletic Bilbao.

The Spanish team, trailing Lokomotiv Moscow 2-1 after last week's first leg in Russia, registered a 1-0 home win to advance on the away goals rule. The result was far from straightforward, though, and was made considerably more difficult in the 60th minute when Fernando Amorebieta received his marching orders for a second bookable offence with the score at 0-0.

Two minutes later, however, Iker Muniain netted at the back post to level the aggregate scores and put Bilbao in pole position on away goals. Lokomotiv rallied and perhaps should have snatched a tie-winning goal when former West Ham striker Manuel Da Costa sliced horribly wide in injury time.

United will host Bilbao at Old Trafford on Thursday 8 March before travelling to Spain for the second leg a week later.
