EARLY TEAM NEWS : LIVERPOOL V UNITED

Manchester United may be without three key midfielders for Saturday's hugely anticipated Premier League clash against Liverpool.

Paul Pogba has been missing since the influential Frenchman was withdrawn in the first half of the 3-0 Champions League victory over Basel on 12 September, with Jose Mourinho later confirming his absence would be "long term".

Club captain Michael Carrick has missed the last two games through injury and Marouane Fellaini is also expected to be sidelined for the trip to Anfield after being hurt on international duty, with Belgium boss Roberto Martinez stating the midfielder sustained knee ligament damage in the first half of their 4-3 win over Bosnia last Saturday.

Mourinho confirmed it is unlikely Fellaini will face Liverpool and Ander Herrera is one contender to feature alongside Nemanja Matic, but the boss feels his squad is strong enough to cope with injuries and insists he has every faith in all of his players.

"From what I read, I don't think he [Fellaini] can play the match," Mourinho said. "Another one plays and it's no problem for me. Not just Ander. We trust every player. We lost players last season and we lost players this season. With our way of thinking and feeling, it really is no problem.

"One player not playing means another one plays. It's an opportunity for another one and we trust them. We never hide behind this or that player or this or that injury. We trust the ones that are going to play."

Fellaini's fellow countryman Romelu Lukaku missed the Bosnia game with an ankle injury but scored as a substitute on his return to action in Tuesday's 4-0 win over Cyprus in Brussels in their final World Cup qualifier.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Phil Jones will take his place in the United defence after withdrawing from the England squad with an injury.

In total, 14 players left the club to represent their countries in World Cup qualifiers, with Sergio Romero the last to take to the pitch as 2014 runners-up Argentina sealed a place in Russia with a 3-1 win in Ecuador in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Fellow Argentinian Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be absent once again as they continue their recoveries from serious knee injuries.

Mourinho could provide further updates on how his squad is shaping up during his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will be without top scorer Sadio Mane, who is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury on international duty. The forward was substituted late on in Senegal's 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over the Cape Verde Islands last weekend.

Jurgen Klopp's side also look set to be without defenders Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren with back problems, while influential midfielder Adam Lallana has reportedly visited a specialist in Qatar to step up his rehabilitation from a thigh injury he suffered in pre-season.

Brazilian duo Phillipe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino faced a long journey back to Merseyside after featuring in their country's 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Chile in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

United, who are joint-top of the Premier League with Manchester City, will be looking to continue our impressive start to the campaign in the first top-flight game after the international break on Saturday (kick-off 12:30 BST).

Re: [EPL] Liverpool vs Manchester United

LIVERPOOL CLASH IS "JUST A MATCH" FOR BOSS

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho insists he is treating Saturday's visit to Liverpool the same as any other Premier League fixture.

The Anfield date is one that is always circled in the club's calendar and the intense rivalry between the sides ensures it is often a tense affair. However, the boss believes it should be considered as just another of the challenges as the Reds aim to mount a push for the title.

"It's three points," he said of the Merseyside mission. "It happened this season, an opposition player told me: 'This match for us is like a cup final and I thought: 'Pfft, why?'

"When you are in a big club, when you are a big player, when you are a big manager, every game is important. You cannot look at some matches as cup finals and other matches differently. For me, every match is a cup final and I've been like this all the time.

"It's three points not four. If we are at a moment in a season where the duel between the two teams ensures the result will mean more than three points, than yes. Sometimes a draw or even to lose by a certain goal difference is important. In this case, it is not important. It's just a three-point match. That's the way I approach it.

"It's good it's that way for me. It's good to do it without any added pressure or emotion. I have to do it always in a professional way. It's the right example for my players to prepare for the Liverpool game.

"Do I like to go to Anfield? Yes, I love it. Do I like to play against Liverpool? Yes. I like amazing stadiums, the best opponents but the preparation is not different. It's just a match."

Serbia star Nemanja Matic and Belgium hot-shot Romelu Lukaku are in line for their first appearance against Jurgen Klopp's side in a United shirt after both scoring for their respective countries during the international break.

Lukaku has made an instant impact at Old Trafford and his strike as a substitute for his country against Cyprus means he has scored in every single game he's played this term, bar the home clash with Leicester City in August.

"One scores goals, another one is a midfield player, an anchor man," added the boss in TV interviews conducted ahead of the weekend. "A player we always need to give us some more stability in our football.

"In this moment, we are a team with good stability and control of matches. I think Matic has been important for that. We are scoring our goals and, of course, our striker and our no.9 is a man with a very strong arrival at the club."

Liverpool vs Manchester United: Police to monitor motorway bridges for offensive banners before kick-off

* Liverpool face bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime
* Offensive banners have been draped on bridges ahead of previous clashes
* Police officers on Merseyside will be briefed to look out for them before kick-off
* Two men were charged with public order offences after last season's meeting

Police on Merseyside will check motorway bridges for offensive banners ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United on Saturday.

Before recent games, offensive signs have been draped over major routes into both cities. And officers will be briefed to look out for them before the lunchtime kick-off.

Should any banners be spotted, they will be removed and the perpetrators will face criminal action.

Offensive banners were hung from motorway bridges last year — two men were charged with public order offences — leading to both clubs releasing a statement asking fans to help ‘eradicate any offensive or discriminatory behaviour’.

The game is the first between the two sides since nine supporters were jailed in July after trouble at a Europa League clash in 2016.

Footage showed punches being thrown after Liverpool fans, sitting in a home section of Old Trafford, unfurled a banner and began chanting.

That prompted a number of United fans to try to get to the group, with police forced to form a cordon to keep them apart.

A police officer branded the violence ‘the worst disorder Greater Manchester Police had seen inside a football stadium in 18 years’.

Five Liverpool and four United fans were given sentences ranging from six weeks to 10 months.
