Manchester United are optimistic that Mason Greenwood will recover from tonsillitis so they do not have to face Rochdale without a recognised striker.

Greenwood missed Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham, during which Marcus Rashford hobbled off with a groin injury.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer boasts limited options up front, given Anthony Martial remains sidelined with a thigh problem. United have not scored more than once in any of their last six games.

Paul Pogba is expected to return in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday, while Axel Tuanzebe, Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes are likely to be handed starts against the League One side.

A raft of youngsters are set for inclusion by Solskjaer, with midfielder James Garner alongside full backs Ethan Laird and Brandon Williams pushing for places in the squad.

Rochdale — winless in four — also have injury issues ahead of their first visit to Old Trafford since 1986.

Brian Barry-Murphy revealed he only has one fit central defender, the 34-year-old Jim McNulty.

‘We haven’t got any recognised centre-halves really to play alongside Jim but there is no point complaining,’ the Rochdale boss said.

Paul Pogba is set to return to action for Manchester United against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup.

The France midfielder was seen limping heavily after United's 1-1 draw with Southampton before the last international break and was forced to withdraw from Didier Deschamps' squad with an ankle injury.

He has since sat out his side's Premier League clashes with Leicester City and West Ham, as well as the 1-0 victory over Astana in the Europa League.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed in his press conference that the World Cup winner is ready to return to action on Wednesday night, in anticipation of him playing a major role in their upcoming Premier League clash with Arsenal.

'He'll probably get some minutes against Rochdale,' he said, as reported by United's official website. 'But we definitely think he’s ready for Arsenal.'

United will be desperate to see the talismanic figure return to the pitch after a difficult spell without him.

Solskjaer's side only just squeezed past Leicester City at Old Trafford after the international break, but were soundly beaten by West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United were furious after they scraped past League One Rochdale on penalties on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup having behind held 1-1 against the minnows after 90 minutes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side won 5-3 on penalties but supporters were not happy with the performance.

Mason Greenwood gave United the lead midway through the second half after a lackluster first half.

United, who sit 10 points off league leaders and arch rivals Liverpool, return to league action against Arsenal on Monday night.
