Reserves win at Fleetwood

Darron Gibson captains United Reserves to victory at Conference club Fleetwood.

Darron Gibson was on duty for United Reserves on Wednesday night as the Reds beat Fleetwood Town 2-0 in the latest pre-season friendly.

The Republic of Ireland international again captained Warren Joyce's side, but fellow midfielder Paul Pogba stole some of the limelight with a stunning first goal on 58 minutes. The young Frenchman produced something of a trademark strike, a right-footer from 25 yards that arced into the top right-hand corner giving Fleetwood goalkeeper Scott Davies little chance of saving it.

Danny Drinkwater maintained his record of scoring in every Reserves warm-up game so far when, five minutes from the end of a feisty yet fair contest, he attacked the right-hand byline and beat the full-back before slotting home from a tight angle.

This confident defeat of an ambitious Conference side represents the Reserves' best pre-season result so far and sets up Joyce's young squad for a two-match trip to Scotland where Spartans and Ayr United will provide the opposition.

United: Sam Johnstone; Michael Keane, Tom Thorpe (Larnell Cole, 46), Sean McGinty (Luke Giverin, 87), Ezekiel Fryers; Danny Drinkwater, Paul Pogba (Max Lonsdale, 87), Darron Gibson, Davide Petrucci (Jesse Lingard, 65), Oliver Norwood (Rafael Leao, 89); Will Keane (John Cofie, 46).

Sub not used: Liam Jacob.

Wow... sangar golnya.

Norwood accounts for Ayr

United ended their short stay in Scotland with a second victory in a matter of days, courtesy of Oliver Norwood's second-half winner.

The talented Northern Ireland international midfielder struck on 54 minutes, curling home a square pass by Paul Pogba from five yards outside the box. It was a spectacular strike worthy of winning any game and provided further evidence of this team's ability to bag goals from distance.

Warren Joyce's side played some nice football that drew applause from the appreciative home fans with Pogba particularly impressive. The young Frenchman shone in midfield and one move that also involved Darren Gibson and Danny Drinkwater clearly thrilled the Somerset Park faithful.

Gibson hammered a 30-yarder well wide while Michael Keane and Davide Petrucci were also off target with first-half efforts. Just before the interval, Pogba and Gibson's approach work carved out a great opening for Will Keane but home keeper Kevin Cuthbert was equal to the striker's shot.

Jesse Lingard, fresh from his hat-trick at Spartans on Sunday, almost doubled the lead soon after coming on as a substitute but his shot whizzed inches wide. Pogba deservedly picked up the sponsors' man of the match award but Cuthbert's display was also acknowledged and striker Michael Moffat deserves a mention for keeping the Reds' defenders busy.

United's second string move on to Tranmere for their next outing on Wednesday night.

United: Kuszczak; M.Keane, McGinty, Thorpe (Cole 15, Giverin 88), Fryers; Norwood, Drinkwater, Pogba, Gibson (Lonsdale 90), Petrucci (Lingard 52); W.Keane (Fornasier 75). Unused subs: Jacob, Cofie, Leao.

Reserves win in Wales
08/08/2011 09:50, Report by A Marshall & C Butler

United's Reserves started their two-match trip to Wales with a 2-0 triumph against Llanelli at Parc y Scarlets.

The Reds went ahead after 11 minutes when Will Keane's shot from close range was blocked and the ball ran to trialist Souleymane Mamam who scored, via a deflection, from an angle.

Playing their usual brand of stylish football, Warren Joyce's side dominated most of the first half with Danny Drinkwater and Larnell Cole registering efforts before a 25-yard piledriver from Jesse Lingard grazed the bar.

Craig Williams and Lee Surman spurned identical glaring opportunities to haul Llanelli back onto level terms and the visitors had to battle for supremacy after the break.

Ravel Morrison entered the fray and looked sharp, embarking on a couple of his trademark solo slaloms through the defence. One such run led to a cracking drive that tested Ashley Morris. Paul Pogba then brought the very best out of Morris with a 30-yard drive that arrowed goalwards before being diverted over the top by the keeper's fingertips.

With seven minutes left, United doubled their lead and sealed a deserved victory in a match they clearly edged. Pogba was fouled inside the box but saw his spot-kick saved by substitute keeper Craig Richards. The ball squirmed back to Pogba who followed up to tap home.

United: Amos; Cole (Leao 85), Vermijl, Fornasier, Fryers; Pogba, Mamam (Morrison 58), Drinkwater, Lingard, Petrucci (Giverin 58); W.Keane (Cofie 46).

Barclays Premier Reserve League

ARSENAL 2
(Watt 30, Aneke 74)

UNITED 1
(Diouf 42)

15/08/2011 20:45, Report by Adam Marshall

United opened their Barclays Premier Reserve League campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal but Darren Fletcher played the full 90 minutes.

The Scot made a successful return from a virus but Warren Joyce's team were beaten despite a well-taken goal from Mame Biram Diouf, who later went off injured.

Fletcher made a hefty early tackle and fed Paul Pogba with a fine pass as he settled in to his midfield role early on. Tomasz Kuszczak kept the scoresheet blank with saves from Kyle Ebecilio and Luke Freeman before United responded with a Diouf header wide and Danny Drinkwater's drive over the top following a neat interchange with Pogba.

A couple of injuries failed to disrupt the hosts and they went ahead on the half-hour mark when Fletcher's pass played Ezekiel Fryers into trouble and Freeman pounced to release Sanchez Watt. The former Leeds loanee wedged a clever finish over Kuszczak for the opener.

The Reds levelled with a well-worked goal as captain Darron Gibson spotted Pogba raiding down the right and his inviting delivery was met by Diouf's instant finish into the left-corner of the net. Vito Mannone then ensured the teams went in level at the break with a superb double stop to thwart Pogba and Diouf.

Diouf struck an Oliver Norwood pass straight at Mannone and the Italian keeper was out bravely to frustrate Pogba from a Gibson through ball. Diouf limped off due to injury and United lost their way a little with Kuszczak producing a fine stop when Watt latched onto a Fryers back-pass and then twice saving long-range efforts from Nico Yennaris.

The Pole had no chance, however, when Chuks Aneke made the most of a lucky deflection to force his way past Fletcher and Larnell Cole before shooting home courtesy of a huge deflection off Fryers.

Joyce made a couple of substitutions and one of the replacements, Davide Petrucci had a rare chance late on but shot straight at his fellow Italian Mannone and even the presence of Kuszczak in the opposition box failed to yield an opportunity from a corner.

United: Kuszczak; Cole (Lingard 84), Brown, Fryers, M.Keane; Pogba, Fletcher, Norwood (Petrucci 84), Gibson, Drinkwater, Diouf (W.Keane 57). Subs not used: Johnstone, McGinty.
