Yah... setelah relatif mudah di awal turnamen, akhirnya United kalah juga di final. Kalah telak 5-1 (kayaknya tribal salah coz di web-nya milkcup tertulis 5-1) dari Aspire academy-nya Qatar. Pelajaran berharga...

Man Utd thrashed by Qatar Aspire Academy in Milk Cup final
30.07.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United have been thrashed in the Milk Cup final by Qatar's Aspire academy.

The young Reds had no answer to formidable opponents, who trounced Desportivo Brasil 6-1 in the semi-finals, and were put out of sight by a Ibrahima Drame hat-trick within 25 minutes.

It will be an important lesson learned for coach Paul McGuinness' charges and helpful in their development and nothing should be taken away from their excellent progression to the final in Northern Ireland.

United started the Academy season with a surprise 2-1 home defeat to Portsmouth at Carrington.

Paul McGuinness' side were on top for long periods but had no real cutting edge and were undone by two goals against the run of play. George Colson drilled the opener into the corner of Liam Jacob's net and the Australian keeper was beaten by Alexander Grant to a dangerous free-kick for the eventual winner.

The young Reds looked a little rusty with their finishing as Jack Rudge, Mats Daehli and Joe Rothwell were all off target in the first half and Matt Gledhill saved well from Daehli and Jack Barmby.

After the break, Tom Lawrence had a goal rightly disallowed for a push following a neat move and another promising build-up led to Barmby firing straight at Gledhill. Injuries to players from both sides, including United's Matthew Wilkinson, disrupted the flow of the second half and the Reds were grateful to Jacob for keeping out Adam Webster's point-blank header and to see Ashley Harris' effort ruled out for offside.

It allowed Lawrence to give his side hope when steering home after great approach work from Daehli and Rothwell but Pompey held out with Tyler Blackett booked late on for dissent as frustration started to grow.

United: Jacob; Hendrie, Wilkinson (Weir 67), McCullough, Blackett; van Velzen, Rudge, Rothwell, Daehli; Lawrence, Barmby. Subs not used: Pearson, Coll, Gorre.

Tom Lawrence

United's Under-18s kickstarted their season with a 3-1 victory over Leeds at Carrington to get three points on the board in the Premier Academy League.

Tom Lawrence scored twice, including a penalty, and Jack Barmby wrapped things up in the closing stages after the visitors competed well throughout. Welshman Lawrence took only a couple of minutes to break through, profiting from some aggressive play by Barmby to set up a left-footed finish with a lovely piece of skill.

A similar piece of individual magic led to Lawrence firing over the top and Ezekiel Fryers went closer when smacking the bar with a curling shot following Luke McCullough's neat backheel. Sam Byrne had a goal harshly ruled out and United were stunned when Lewis Turner's shot out of nowhere from the left flank beat Joe Coll at his near post for the equaliser.

Eric Grimes kept out James Weir and Byrne but the keeper had to face a penalty on the hour mark after more neat footwork from Lawrence drew a reckless tackle out of Conor Qualter. Lawrence dusted himself down to calmly beat the young Irish keeper from the spot for 2-1.

The outstanding Lawrence was unlucky with attempts to grab his hat-trick and Gyliano van Velzen deflected a precise Tyler Blackett cross over the bar before Barmby made sure of the points when a corner routine involving Lawrence and Joe Rothwell opened up the defence and the forward, watched by father Nick in the stands, despatched a firm finish.

United: Coll; Hendrie, Fryers, McCullough, Blackett; Barmby, Lawrence, Weir, Rothwell, van Velzen; Byrne. Subs: McNair, Jacob, Dalley, Rowley, Gorre.

Goals from Jack Barmby and Gyliano van Velzen gave United's under-18s victory over Sheffield United in a repeat of last season's FA Youth Cup final.

The Reds almost scored after 70 seconds when Tom Lawrence flashed a long-range effort just wide but, as the hosts warmed to the occasion, Elliott Whitehouse forced a fine, plunging save from Liam Jacob with a 10th minute shot from distance.

Just as the Blades were establishing a foothold in the game, United broke the deadlock. Lawrence's measured ball released Sam Byrne, whose attempt to round George Willis was thwarted, only for on-song Barmby to race in and tuck home the loose ball.

Jacob then beat away a shot from Deacon, before Willis had to drop to his left to turn away a shot from van Velzen. The Dutch winger, operating on the right wing but cutting inside, would not be denied his goal for long, however.

United's lead was almost doubled when Lawrence's curling effort bounced off the crossbar, before van Velzen tapped home the rebound when James Weir's shot was spilled.

As the defences largely bossed the remainder of the game, the closest call for either side came when Whitehouse dragged a shot just wide of Jacob's far post in stoppage time. Paul McGuinness' youngsters registered a first clean sheet of the season and a second successive victory, making it six points from a possible 12 so far this term.

United: Jacob; Hendrie, McCullough, Dalley, Blackett; van Velzen, Rothwell, Weir, Barmby (Daehli, 60); Lawrence, Byrne (McNair, 83). Subs not used: Coll, Pearson, Ekangamene.

United's youngsters*recovered from conceding a 31-second goal to register a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough at Carrington.

It was probably a fair result in the end but, after the setback of losing Tom Lawrence to injury before the game, the Reds were stunned*by the first move of the match when Jordan Jones converted a Charlie Wyke knock-back to a*Lewis Sirrell cross.

Gyliano van Velzen and Declan Dalley spurned gilt-edged openings but Wyke remained a threat at the other end as neither side gained the upper hand.*Soon after the break, the excellent Tyler Blackett's cross found van Velzen, whose header came back off an upright. The danger looked to have passed but Joe Rothwell was gifted possession on the edge of the box and rocketed a drive past Luke Coddington for the equaliser.

Coddington palmed away a Sam Byrne shot on the turn and Mats Daehli fired wide but Boro had chances too with Wyke off target on a couple of occasions and Curtis Edwards forcing a brilliant, diving stop out of Liam Jacob.

Wilson Kneeshaw also tested Jacob's reflexes and the keeper was grateful to see a Jones curler bounce back off the woodwork as the scoreline remained 1-1.

United: Jacob; Hendrie, Dalley, McCullough, Blackett; Van Velzen, Weir, Rothwell, Barmby (Pearson 54), Daehli; Byrne. Unused Subs: Coll, Gorre, Ekangamene.

BLACKBURN ROVERS*3

.

Despite a brave, late fightback, United’s youngsters fell foul of a clinical performance from Blackburn Rovers at Brockhall Village.

The hosts were two goals ahead inside 21 minutes after fine finishes from John O’Sullivan and Jamie McClaren, and the deficit might have been greater in a one-sided first-half.

United rallied after the break and passed up a handful of presentable opportunities, before McClaren seemingly put the outcome beyond doubt by stabbing home his second goal.

Joe Rothwell reprised his spectacular shooting of last week’s draw against Middlesbrough with another rasping long-range effort and Tom Lawrence also curled in a stunning effort, but it was too little, too late for the Reds.

In a keenly-contested game littered with fouls and cautions, Blackburn adapted better, while United struggled to find a passing rhythm and often caused their own problems.

Luke Hendrie managed to clear the danger on 10 minutes, after Tyler Blackett’s blind back-pass had been intercepted, but there was no reprieve when the Reds failed to play their way out of defence five minutes later.

Declan Dalley only managed to scuff his clearance to the edge of the area, but O’Sullivan’s emphatic finish hurtled unstoppably inside Joe Coll’s far post.

The United goalkeeper was similarly helpless six minutes later, when Curtis Haley’s looping cross was superbly redirected inside the far post by McClaren’s arcing header.

Rovers continued to menace, while Sam Byrne headed off-target and fired straight at home goalkeeper Chris Dilo with the Reds’ best openings of the half.

United flew out of the traps in the second period, and should have pulled a goal back when Byrne, Jack Barmby, __ Weir and Gyliano van Velzen all had efforts blocked in the same passage of play.

Dilo then denied both Tom Lawrence and van Velzen with smart stops, before McClaren made victory safe by turning in the rebound after his own header had rattled Coll’s post.

To their credit, the Reds continued to battle gamely, and pulled a goal back with 15 minutes remaining. Blackett did well to divert a clearance into the path of Rothwell, who smashed a fine shot inside Dilo’s near post.

Tails up, United struck again shortly afterwards. Lawrence exchanged passes with Blackett and curled a magnificent effort into the far top corner. From nowhere, the visitors were back in contention.

Despite plenty of late endeavour, however, the Reds’ closest brush with parity came through Rothwell’s scuffed shot which trickled two yards wide in injury time.

United: Coll; Hendrie, McCullough, Dalley, Blackett; Barmby, Rothwell, Weir (Pearson 69), van Velzen; Lawrence (Gorre 89), Byrne.

Subs not used: Ekangamene, Rudge
