UNDER-18S: WEST BROM 4 MANCHESTER UNITED 2

Under-18 Premier League | Birmingham Road | Scorers: Holsgrove 25, Rogers 33, Soule 39, Hall 63; Barlow pen 71, Baars 89

Manchester United’s youngsters launched their 2017/18 league season with a shock 4-2 defeat at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Trailing by three goals at the break, the Reds had the better of the second half but the deficit proved to be too big an obstacle.

It was, for most of the time, bright and windy at West Brom’s Birmingham Road training centre. There was a small crowd present as the game got under way and, from the off, United dominated possession.

Defender Ethan Laird started the game in lively fashion and for most of the first half looked more like a winger than a full-back as he frequently attacked down the right.

Nishan Burkart, with a header, and captain Angel Gomes, who fired over, both went within inches of putting United in front.

Then, in the space of 14 minutes, the entire complexion of the game changed as West Brom proceeded to score three goals through Kieron Holsgrove, Morgan Rogers and Jamie Soule, to leave United with a mountain to climb.

United carved out numerous chances during the opening half without any success, while Albion produced far fewer with much greater accuracy.

The second half brought a similar pattern of play, with United having more of the ball, but it was Albion who found the net, in the 63rd minute, through Mylo Hall’s curling finish.

United continued to press forward and, in the 71st minute, the young Reds pulled one back when Aidan Barlow slotted home from the penalty spot after Burkart had been felled by Pablo Martinez.

Millan Baars reduced the arrears with time running out with a cracking shot, but it too late for United to harbour thoughts of gaining anything from a game that, remarkably, they could have won.

United: Foticek; Laird, Ercolani, Barratt (Baars 46), O’Connor; Barlow, Galbraith (Levitt 85) Garner, Williams (Mellor 85); Gomes, Burkart. Subs not used: Thompson, Bernard.

UNDER-18S : MANCHESTER UNITED 2 STOKE 1

Under-18 Premier League | The Cliff | Scorers: Barlow 42, Burkart 46 | Szereto 60 pen

Manchester United’s Under-18s were in action at their spiritual home – The Cliff on Lower Broughton Road in Salford – on Friday night, securing a 2-1 triumph over Stoke City.

With goals on either side of half-time, from Aidan Barlow and Nishan Burkart, the Reds collected the first points of the season in what was a typically incident-packed game against the Potters.

United’s great FA Youth Cup-winning sides of the 1950s (and beyond) were assembled, honed and nurtured at this famous training ground, alongside the River Irwell, and it has remained a special place for generations of young players ever since. It is a facility that is firmly enshrined in the club’s history and, to this day, retains a magical attraction for players, coaches and supporters alike.

Just looking at the pitch, beautifully manicured and mown in the classic Wembley style of broad alternating strips, was enough to bring back memories. And those old enough to remember the halcyon days of the past would surely be struggling not have a moistening of the eye when visiting the old place these days.

Anyway, that is enough of the nostalgia and on to the main business of the evening and the Under-18 Premier League fixture against the team from the Potteries.

It was a pleasant, quite warm and dry, evening in Salford and there was good gathering of dedicated fans who were accommodated on the riverside of the ground. United, who were aiming to get the season up and running after faltering in the campaign’s opener at West Brom, contributed to a lively opening with both sides looking to attack at every opportunity as the ball swung from one end to the other.

The first decent chance of the game fell to the visitors when Venancio Monteiro fired in a free-kick that needed dealing with by United keeper Alex Fojtíček, who did really well to stop it entering the net just below the angle of crossbar and post.

On the half-hour mark, United went close when Lee O’Connor's close-range shot was blocked on the line by Stoke’s number one Male Deczki. Two minutes later, Stoke should have scored when Monteiro latched on to Krisztofer Szereto’s left-wing cross but his shot was wide of the post.

United eventually moved into the lead, with three minutes of the half remaining, when Barlow managed to re-direct James Garner’s shot past Deczki from inside the box, following a positive run by Angel Gomes.

United were celebrating again within 60 seconds of the restart as a beautiful sweeping move downfield involving several players was concluded when Burkart stooped to superbly head Millen Baars' right-wing centre firmly past Deczki.

Stoke pulled one back, on the hour, when Szereto scored confidently from the penalty-spot after the referee had spotted a handling offence by Ethan Galbraith, even if the decision seemed harsh.

There was no further scoring but plenty of action and goalmouth incident to entertain the fans on this, the first evening match to be played at The Cliff this season.

United: Fojtíček; Laird, Dunne, O’Connor, Williams; Baars (Greenwood 87), Garner, Galbraith (Levitt 64), Barlow; Gomes; Burkart (Bernard 90). Subs not used: Thompson, Ramazani.

U18S : DERBY COUNTY 0 UNITED 2

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...,245,4928,3017

Under-18 Premier League | Derby County Training Centre | Scorers: Gomes 26, Burkart 59

A goal in each half at Derby County’s picturesque Oakwood training facility saw Kieran McKenna’s team gain their second victory of the season.

Angel Gomes grabbed the opening goal midway through the first half and the win was sealed after the break when Nishan Burkart doubled the advantage.

Fears that the terrible weather, mainly extremely heavy rain, experienced on the journey to Derby could be what the teams may have to contend with during the game, thankfully, proved to be unfounded.

Both teams began the game slowly with Derby marginally having the better of the early attacking action.

There was little in it until the 26th minute when Brandon Williams picked out Burkart with a long downfield ball. The Reds' centre forward did well to keep the ball from drifting off the pitch and the quickly found Gomes on the edge of the area.

There were several Derby defenders ready to challenge Gomes but he kept his composure before curling a beautiful shot out of the reach of goalkeeper Matthew Yates.

United almost went further ahead just before the break when Aidan Barlow tried his luck from distance, but the ball flew inches wide of the target.

Buoyed by their success in the first half, United came out for the second spell looking far more adventurous and confident. Gomes fired over from a good position and Ethan Laird went close with a header from Barlow’s corner.

Then, in the 59th minute, United’s good work bore fruit when they grabbed a second goal of the afternoon.

There was no hint of what was to follow when the ball ran to Burkart in the middle of the field. Derby were well represented but a lapse amongst them allowed the United striker to break free and he gleefully took the opportunity to advance upfield before lashing the ball past the diving keeper.

United rarely looked in trouble after that and with an ounce of luck Barlow and George Tanner could have added to the list of goalscorers.

United: Fojticek; Laird, Dunne, O’Connor, Willims; Baars (Greenwood 62), Garner, Levitt, Barlow (McGhee 77); Gomes, Burkart (Tanner 82). Subs not used: Thompson, Mellor.

UEFA YOUTH LEAGUE: UNITED 4 BASEL 3

UEFA Youth League | Leigh Sports Village | Scorers: Barlow 5, Boonen 50, Gomes 57 (pen), Bohui 62 (pen) | Pululu 14, Lokaj 58, Kaiser 66 (pen)

Manchester United's youngsters started the European campaign with victory in a game that contained three penalties, a red card and a real glut of goals in the second half.

It took only five minutes for the Reds to open our UEFA Youth League account for the season as Joshua Bohui's run created an opening for Aidan Barlow. Although it initially looked like Jozef Pukaj had made the save, the ball looped up in the air and over the line before he could keep it out at the second attempt.

Basel replied in kind with Martin Liechti releasing Afimico Pululu into acres of space and the French forward supplied an impudent lofted finish over Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui as the Belgian keeper advanced from his goal.

Both teams had chances in the remainder of the first half as Angel Gomes had a free-kick deflect off target via Alessandro Stabile before Pululu dragged wide, when shrugging off Indy Boonen, and Daniele Vesco sent a header over the bar.

As the heavens opened in the second period, it also started to rain goals with the fans at Leigh Sports Village enjoying the entertainment. Boonen smuggled in an inviting free-kick by Barlow to get the ball rolling again and United started to turn on the style. Barlow was hugely unlucky with a sweeping drive that cannoned off the upright, from a Gomes pass, and Ethan Hamilton played a one-two with Gomes only to shoot wide.

When Boonen was tripped by Yves Jankowski, Gomes's penalty sent Pukaj the wrong way to open up a two-goal advantage. It lasted only two minutes however, as Ylber Lokaj rose to power in a header from a corner to quickly reduce the deficit.

The Reds scored another penalty, this time through Bohui, who smashed it home, when Gomes was clumsily up-ended inside the area by Lokaj, only four minutes after the defender had nodded his side back into the game.

To their credit, the visitors continued to make a fight of it and, after Liechti's free-kick was pushed away by Moutha-Sebtaoui, a soft penalty was awarded when it was unclear whether Bohui or substitute James Garner had even committed the offence. Kaiser drilled in the third successful spot-kick of the match, low and hard past Moutha-Sebtaoui.

Barlow hammered a free-kick wide as the goals, and chances dried up, and United's hopes of securing three points were boosted when Kaiser was sent off for a second yellow card, a crude knee into the back of Bohui.

Vesco was fortunate to escape a red card of his own for kicking Gomes when already on a booking but Nicky Butt's men held out comfortably to get Group A off to a good start with a deserved success. Benfica beat CSKA Moscow 5-1 in the other tie in the pool.

United: Moutha-Sebtaoui; Laird, Warren, O'Connor, Tanner (Kenyon 57) ; Sang (Garner 63), Hamilton; Boonen, Gomes (Burkart 92), Barlow; Bohui. Subs not used: Fojticek, Dunne, B. Williams, Baars.

U18 PL CUP: UNITED 4 ARSENAL 3

Under-18 Premier League Cup | The Cliff | Scorers: Burkart 48, Bughail-Mellor 68, Gomes 83,89 (both pens) | Saka 5, Smith-Rowe 12, Olayinka 36

In what must be one of the most remarkable games ever played at United’s legendary Cliff training ground in Salford, United’s Under-18s recovered from trailing by three clear goals at the break to claim an incredible victory over Arsenal in the dying embers of the contest.

Arsenal were almost untouchable during an impressive first half for the North London club, but that was totally eclipsed after the break as United staged a truly remarkable fightback, scoring four goals without reply including two Angel Gomes penalties.

In a nutshell, this was a truly spectacular and distinct ‘game of two halves!’ Playing at the spiritual home of the club's junior players more often while work on the pitches at the Aon Training Complex is ongoing is clearly an experience to enjoy and cherish for the youngsters.

This was the opening game in the new Under-18 Premier League Cup and United went into this group fixture hoping to build on the league victories over Stoke City and Derby County in recent weeks, but that plan was soon put to the test as the Gunners raced into a two-goal lead inside 12 minutes.

Buyako Saka grabbed the first, in the fifth minute, with a good finish after cutting in from the right and, seven minutes later, Emile Smith-Rowe took advantage of defensive lapse to find the net from inside the area.

United were battling hard to stem the tide and, for a while, it appeared that a goal to put us back in the game wasn’t too far away. At the same time, Arsenal were looking very slick and confident and were regularly threatening United’s goal and, in the 36th minute, they claimed their third goal through James Olayinka.

Dylan Levitt replaced the injured Aidan Barlow at the interval and the young Welsh midfield player made an almost instant impact when he crossed from the left, three minutes into the second half, for Nishan Burkart to score at the near post.

That early goal after the restart was just the boost United needed and it provided the springboard for a noticeable transformation in the Reds' performance and the game in general.

In the 68th minute, substitute D’Mani Bughail Mellor reduced the deficit to a single goal with a smart finish following an eye-catching United attack. Suddenly, the game had been turned on its head and United were looking more than capable of claiming some reward from a match which, at one point, had appeared completely out of reach.

Then, seven minutes from time, Bughail-Mellor was felled in the area and Gomes stepped forward to thump home the equaliser from the penalty spot.

But that wasn’t the end of the story as, with less than two minutes remaining on the clock, a similar sequence of events saw substitute Largie Ramazani fouled as he burst into the area and Gomes confidently repeated the process of six minutes earlier by sweeping the ball past keeper Joao Virginia.

This tie had to be seen to be believed because, at the break, United were nowhere to seen, but the second half belonged totally to the Reds and, in the end, Kieran McKenna's side were full value for the astounding victory.

United: Fojticek; Tanner, Dunne, O’Connor, B. Williams; Baars (Ramazani 62), Garner, Galbraith, Barlow (Levitt 46); Gomes; Burkart (Bughail-Mellor 62). Subs not used: Thompson, Laird.

U18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 1 NEWCASTLE UNITED 1

Under-18 Premier League | The Cliff | Scorers: Puigmal 61; Young 74

Manchester United’s run of three straight victories at Under-18 level was brought to an end on Saturday afternoon as Newcastle United claimed a share of the points at The Cliff.

The game was goalless at half-time but both sides found the net after the break - Arnau Puigmal scoring for the Reds and Jack Young striking for Newcastle - in what was a keenly-fought encounter.

Kieran McKenna’s young Reds were back at The Cliff just a week after that spectacular Premier League Under-18 Cup clash against Arsenal, that saw United recover from three goals down to take the points with a dramatic 4-3 victory.

It was an overcast afternoon in Salford with threatening dark clouds above but, thankfully, the rain had kept off as kick-off time arrived. There was a small gathering of spectators in attendance as the match got under way with the Reds defending the indoor-arena end of the ground.

Both sides began the game in a lively mood as they sought to carve out an early advantage but there were no goal attempts of note until the 11th minute when George Tanner’s cross from the right provided Nathan Harker, in the Newcastle goal, with his first serious work of the game. The visitors then forced a corner which the Reds successfully defended, whilst at the other end Ethan Laird fired into the side-netting.

The hosts' wide players, Millen Baars and D’Mani Mellor, were causing Newcastle some problems with their pace down the flanks, but it was still the two sets of defenders who were having the upper hand.

No score at the break was a good reflection of the overall pattern of the game that had offered rare genuine goalscoring opportunities. This was in stark contrast to the game of eight days earlier when Arsenal had plundered three goals without reply before the interval.

The second half provided more in the way of entertainment as both teams showed more endeavour and an appetite to attack.

Laird was proving to be a handful when he rampaged down the left for the Reds and one such run and cross in the early moments of the second half had the Magpies scrambling to clear.

McKenna's team were taking the game to the visitors and it was Laird who looked most likely to break the deadlock. One shot struck the foot of the far post and rebounded away and moments later, another attempt on goal flew inches wide of the target.

The Reds finally took the lead in the 61st minute and was Laird who indirectly provided the assist after he was tripped as he cut inside. Puigmal took the resulting free-kick and with a beautifully struck shot, he bypassed the defensive wall to find the net close to the inside of the post.

The hosts' lead lasted barely thirteen minutes before the Newcastle youngsters, under the tutelage of former Norwich City and Everton defender David Watson, grabbed an equaliser thanks to Young’s shot from the edge of the area.

A couple of long-range efforts from Thomas Allan, in the moments after the leveller, went agonisingly close to producing a winner for the Magpies.

United: Fojticek, Tanner, Barrett, O’Connor, Laird; Puigmal, Garner; Baars (Ramazani 46), Galbraith (Williams 83), Mellor; Burkart (McGhee 78). Substitutes not used: Ercolani, Thompson.

UNDER-19S: CSKA MOSCOW 1 UNITED 2

UEFA Youth League | Oktyabr Stadium, Moscow | Scorers: Merenchukov 90+1 | Barlow 8, Gomes 38

Manchester United Under-19s maintained a winning start in Europe on Wednesday afternoon, overcoming a less-than-perfect pitch to beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 and make it two victories from two games in the UEFA Youth League.

Aidan Barlow and Angel Gomes, two of the Reds' scorers in the opening 4-3 win over FC Basel a fortnight ago, both found the net again but, this time, their team-mate at the other end, goalkeeper Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui, had much less to do behind a defence well-marshalled by captain Tyrell Warren, until CSKA pulled one back late on.

Both of United's strikes came in the first half, with Barlow providing the breakthrough in the eighth minute, shortly after Gomes had gone agonisingly close to doing the same.

Gomes, whose place in the England Under-17 World Cup squad was confirmed this week, arced a glorious shot against the crossbar after Tom Sang’s floated ball forward from midfield was laid into his path by striker Joshua Bohui. The rattled woodwork was a warning for the hosts that United were up for the task in hand from the first whistle, a warning they failed to heed when Indy Boonen found Barlow inside the box. The latter controlled the pass on his chest before beating Nikolai Zirikov with a crisp finish.

Barlow almost grabbed a second goal when he clipped a shot just wide of the far post but United still only had to wait until the 38th minute to make it 2-0. By then, Moutha-Sebtaoui had been asked to do a brave bit of smothering inside the six-yard box, after CSKA Moscow impressively switched the play from left to right with a ball that drew admiring applause from the several hundred fans in the only stand.

Many of those home supporters were grumbling when Bohui was brought down just outside the area for a free-kick but it was definitely the right call and their chagrin was compounded when Gomes despatched the set-piece into the bottom right-hand corner with Zirikov possibly at fault.

United controlled the second half for long periods, limiting the hosts to a tame volley held by Moutha-Sebtaoui and a chance that Roman Pukhov should have done much better with than head well wide of the target. At the other end, United's Ethan Laird pushed forward to drill a decent shot across goal and Bohui had some fans on their feet expecting to celebrate a goal with a powerful rising effort into the side-netting.

Suddenly, from a comfortable position, United conceded a last-gasp goal when CSKA substitute Dmitrii Merenchukov swept home from close range but, although the home supporters and their side drew encouragement from this, it was too late - and the Reds had been ultimately too strong - for the scoreline to be overturned.

United: Moutha-Sebtaoui; Laird, Warren, O'Connor, Kenyon (Tanner 60); Sang, Hamilton; Boonen, Gomes (B. Williams 86), Barlow (Garner 73); Bohui. Subs not used: Fojticek, Dunne, Ercolani, Galbraith.

UNDER-18S: EVERTON 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Under-18 Premier League | Finch Farm | Scorers: Adedoyin 46; Ramazani 61

Manchester United's encouraging start to the 2017/18 Premier League Under-18 campaign continued against Everton at Finch Farm, but they were forced to settle for a point from a 1-1 draw for the second successive week.

Both goals, scored by Korede Adedoyin and Largie Ramazani, came in a hugely entertaining second half after neither side managed to break the deadlock before the break.

Kieran McKenna's team went into the game on Merseyside looking back at run of four league and cup games without defeat, with the opening-day reverse away at West Bromwich Albion being the only real blemish on the season so far for the Under-18s.

So United, wearing red shirts and black shorts, were keen to complete the month of September on a high note.

It wasn't the most pleasant of mornings in this little corner of Liverpool, with the players having to cope with wind and rain as the game got under way.

Away games at Everton, at any level, are never an easy proposition and this contest had something of a cagey opening as both teams eased their way into the match.

The first real goal attempt of note didn’t arrive until the eighth minute, when Everton's Stephen Duke-McKenna tried his luck with a shot that fizzed past Alex Fojticek's goal.

Moments later and, at the other end, Aidan Barlow hit a long-range shot that required attention from Everton goalkeeper Nicolas Hansen.

Shooting from distance seemed to be the morning’s preferred option with Everton’s Joe Anderson also going close.

Ten minutes before the break and United went close to taking the lead when a neat interchange of passes between Nishan Burkart and Barlow saw the former miss the target by inches.

Good defensive work by Fojticek and Brandon Williams kept Everton at bay, while Mason Greenwood burst through the Everton defence before hitting a goalbound shot that forced Hansen to make an excellent save.

Everton made two substitutions at the start of the second half and it was one of those, Adedoyin, who made an almost instant impact by heading his side into the lead from Elliot Richards’ cross within 45 seconds of the restart.

It was certainly a bolt from the blue for the young Reds, but it was also a really impressive header from a player who had only just joined the action.

Remarkably, the sequence of events that brought Everton's goal were almost replicated a few minutes later when coach McKenna sent on Ethan Laird and Ramazani.

Shortly afterwards a great pass from Greenwood sent Ramazani through to place the ball past Hansen with an accomplished finish to put United on terms.

If the first half had failed to scale any real heights, the second 45 minutes had more than made up for the dearth of action earlier.

Both sides showed so much more attacking adventure and, with a stroke of luck, there could easily have been several more goals at either end.

United went agonisingly close to grabbing all three points in the closing minutes with Greenwood, Ramazani and Max Dunne all on the verge of celebrating.

And, in the very last second of the game, they survived a real scare when Everton skipper Michael Collins headed against the bar from Adedoyin’s right-wing cross.

United: Fojticek, Ercolani (Laird 57), Dunne, O’Connor, Williams (Ramazani 57); Tanner, Garner, Puigmal, Greenwood; Barlow; Burkart (Mellor 68). Subs not used: Thompson, Levitt.

U18S FRIENDLY: LEICESTER 1 UNITED 1

Manchester United and Leicester City's Academy teams contested a feisty friendly match on Friday evening at Nanpantan Sports Ground, home of Evo-Stik League side Loughborough Dynamos.

No quarter was asked and certainly none was given in an extremely hard-fought friendly that failed by some way to live up to its billing. The challenges were full blooded and, at one point, early in the second half, it boiled over into a free-for-all that involved almost every outfield player.

The outcome was a solitary yellow card shown to United’s Dion McGhee.

Despite the vigorous exchanges, there was plenty of attractive football to admire as the teams put on an entertaining contest for the modest attendance of 252 dotted around the perimeter of the well-manicured pitch.

Brandon Williams put United in front, in the 29th minute, but the Foxes were level within seven minutes.

That was the scoring completed but chances continued to be made at both ends and, but for some fine goalkeeping, the scoreline could made very different reading.

Both United’s keepers, Alex Fojticek and James Thompson, were in inspired form in limiting the Foxes to just one goal.

The crowd certainly enjoyed seeing the youngsters of two Premier League clubs on their local ground and the teams ensured that they saw a game to remember.

United: Fojticek (Thompson 74), Ercolani (Dunne 82), B. Williams., Bernard, Barrett, Galbraith, Tanner (Baars 75), Garner, Mellor, McGhee (Barlow 82), Ramazani.

UNDER-18S: UNITED 6 WOLVES 1

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Levitt 8, Burkart 29, Barlow 37 (pen), Greenwood 16,40,64 | Samuels 90

Manchester United's Under-18s blazed to our best win of the season so far with a terrific performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday.

Five goals to the good at the break, the Reds took our foot off the gas slightly in the second half but were still fabulous value for their win following an overall excellent performance. Playing on the newly renovated and renewed pitch for the first time, United wasted no time in taking the game to the visitors. Just 10 minutes had elapsed when Dylan Levitt grabbed the opening goal with a thunderous drive from the edge of the penalty area.

Five minutes later, Wolves could have been level when Austin Samuels raced through, looking all set to score until United’s keeper Alex Fojticek pulled off a brilliant diving save. The Reds responded instantly when Millen Baars crossed from the right for Mason Greenwood to head home.

The Reds looked capable of scoring every time we attacked and, in the 29th minute, Burkart squeezed home the third goal. There were 15 minutes remaining to the half-time whistle, but United were far from finished where scoring goals were concerned. Wolves goalkeeper Rory Brown was beaten twice more as the clock ticked towards the break with Aidan Barlow netting from the penalty spot, after Burkart had been fouled, and, in the 40th minute, Greenwood headed the fifth goal from Baars' pinpoint centre.

Despite the game being a virtual lost cause, the visitors improved markedly after the break and restricted United to just one more goal, Greenwood completing his hat-trick from Barlow’s pass in the 64th minute, and keeper Brown deserves a special mention as, without his heroics throughout the match, United could have finished with double figures.

And it was Wolves who had the last word, in the final minute, when Samuels broke free to hit home a consolation goal for the lads from the West Midlands.

United: Fojticek; Tanner, Dunne, Barrett, B.Williams; Levitt, Garner (Ramazani 72), Baars; Burkart (Galbraith 72), Greenwood, Barlow (Puigmal 65). Subs not used: Thompson, O’Connor.

U18S: UNITED 6 MIDDLESBROUGH 2

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: O’Connor 16, 90, Burkart 31, 35, Barlow 73, Levitt 82 | Wearne 13, Walker 34

The recent run of impressive form Manchester Under-18s have been enjoying was maintained in style as we overcame a strong Middlesbrough side to stretch the unbeaten run to six games.

And, at the same time, the Reds rattled home six goals for the second successive week to give the goals for column a very healthy appearance.

This meeting had all the makings of an intriguing contest with our youngsters holding fourth spot in table, just one point and one place above Middlesbrough who had completed one game more.

United, of course, were going into the game on the back of that scintillating 6-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Boro were boosted by a 3-2 success over North-East rivals Newcastle United last weekend.

Weather-wise it was what can only be described as changeable as kick-off time drew near with brief showers and very fresh winds – courtesy perhaps of the incoming ‘Storm Brian’ – sharing the scene with occasional outbreaks of beaming sunshine.

Mason Greenwood and Boro’s Connor Malley both fired in shots in the opening minutes as the game got off to bright start. Both sides looked lively and keen to take the contest to their opponents and, in the 13th minute, the visitors made the breakthrough with a goal from Stephen Wearne.

Kieran McKenna's men, however, were quick to reply and, barely three minutes later, were on terms when Nishan Burkart crossed from the left for Lee O’Connor to score at the far post.

Millen Baars was unlucky not to find the net on two occasions with shots that brought excellent saves from Boro keeper Zach Hemming. Then came a spell of three goals in four minutes with Burkart scoring twice for United either side of Stephen Walker’s goal for the Teesside club.

‘Storm Brian’ was, by this time, making its presence felt as the gusts became stronger, but both team coped well and to some degree used the wind to their benefit.

If the first half was a finely balanced contest, the second half certainly saw United take the laurels after finding the net a further three times. Aidan Barlow made it 4-2, in the 73rd minute, with a curling shot that skimmed over Greenwood’s head on its route past Hemming.

Substitute Largie Ramazani was then involved in the game’s final two goals with neat passes to set up Dylan Levitt, eight minutes from time, and O’Connor just before the final whistle.

United: Fojticek; O’Connor, Dunne, Barrett, B. Williams; Baars (McGhee 68), Garner, Levitt, Barlow (Mellor 77); Greenwood (Ramazani 74); Burkart. Subs not used: Thompson, Galbraith.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 2 SUNDERLAND 1

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Barlow 64, Greenwood; Kimpioka 24

Manchester United's Under-18s had to dig in for victory on Saturday, eventually claiming all three points thanks to second-half strikes from Aidan Barlow and Mason Greenwood.

The visitors from Sunderland took a surprise 1-0 lead into the break after netting midway through the first period. However, Kieran McKenna's side recovered after the interval to secure a third successive triumph on the back of the recent 6-1 and 6-2 drubbings at home to Wolves and then Middlesbrough respectively.

Benjamin Kimpioka opened the scoring for the Black Cats in the 25th minute after a string of passes carried the possession to his feet just inside the United area. The striker then dissected Reds defenders Max Dunne and Jake Barrett with a neat ball of his own to Bali Mumba, before profiting from the one-two to slot home past Alex Fojticek.

Mounting pressure from the Reds after the interval eventually paid dividends with an equaliser in the 64th minute. United substitute James Garner showed great tenacity to win the ball back for his side in open play following a corner and when Nishan Burkart's low cross took a deflection, the prolific Barlow showed quick reactions to level the score at 1-1 by nodding in at the far post.

Greenwood later popped up with the winner to ensure United achieved simultaneous Saturday wins - the Academy side were playing at the same time as the first team were beating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Old Trafford.

United: Fojticek; Laird (Mengi), Dunne, Barrett, B. Williams; O'Connor (Garner), McGhee (Mellor 46), Levitt, Barlow; Greenwood; Burkart. Substitutes: Thompson, Baars.

UNDER-19S : UNITED 1 BENFICA 1

Manchester United and Benfica battled out a 1-1 draw at Leigh Sports Village in the UEFA Youth League to leave the Reds on top of Group A.

Following a tetchy 2-2 draw between the clubs in Portugal last time out, this was another combative encounter with a clash of styles which was fascinating to witness.

Ethan Hamilton fired United ahead after only three minutes, reward for pressing from the front by Nicky Butt's side. The Scottish midfielder aggressively robbed Gedson Fernandes and kept his composure to stroke past an exposed Daniel Azevedo with his left foot.

The Reds have made a habit of getting off to great starts in the competition but were pegged back 10 minutes later. Medina Etienne escaped down the right flank and crossed to the far post, where Joao Felix pounced ahead of George Tanner to nudge in the equaliser.

With coach Butt forced to watch from the stands after his dismissal in Lisbon, things were fractious at times again in a competitive contest played in a real European manner. Joao Felix had a deflected shot pushed away by Alex Fojticek, with the keeper also worked from the corner and aided by Tanner as the ball was scrambled away from the line.

Florentina did force the ball into the net but was well offside, while Ethan Laird shepherded the ball the right side of the far post from a United perspective after Tyrell Warren sliced a centre by Gedson Fernandes. Aidan Barlow's free-kick was blocked by the wall as the first half drew to a close.

Angel Gomes, fresh from winning the Under-17 World Cup with England, made an instant impression as a substitute by setting up Nishan Burkart for a shot over the bar as the 742 fans at Leigh Sports Village enjoyed a game that could have gone either way.

Hamilton was in with a great chance of a second goal, from Joshua Bohui's intelligent lay-off, but his finish lacked power on this occasion and Azevedo saved comfortably. Back came Benfica, with Joao Filipe clean through after tricking Ro-Shaun Williams, only to roll his shot under Fojticek but against a post. Warren cleared the danger after avoiding any mishaps as the ball trickled towards the unguarded net.

Gomes' long-ranger was easily held by Azevedo, while Laird had to be cool at the other end to clear from inside his own six-yard box after Joao Felipe did superbly to beat Tanner. Basel defeated CSKA Moscow 4-2 in the other game in the group, moving the Swiss side to within a point of Butt's men, but this was a fair result on the day.

United: Fojticek; Tanner, Warren, R. Williams, Laird; Sang (Gomes 55), Hamilton (B. Williams 83), Garner; Barlow, Bohui, Burkart (Baars 83). Subs not used: Thompson, Dunne, Ercolani, Kenyon.

UNDER-18S : MANCHESTER CITY 4 UNITED 1

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...,173,2000,1302

Under-18 Premier League | Manchester City Academy | Scorers: Simmonds 7,40 Rosler 28, Garcia 73 | Chong 5

Manchester United’s youngsters slipped to a first league defeat since the opening day of the season in the Mini-Derby at City’s Etihad Campus on Saturday.

The reverse also meant that Manchester City leapfrogged over Kieran McKenna’s lads to capture top spot in the table.

There were brief falls of snow in east Manchester early morning but, by the time the teams took the field blue skies were sharing the heavens with fluffy white clouds. Manchester has always been famous for its weather and it certainly appears on some days to have a climate all of its own.

And bright sunshine was illuminating the scene when United strode into the lead in the fifth minute. Nishan Burkart was responsible for the assist with a brave run which saw him burst into the City penalty area before crossing for Tahith Chong to blast the ball high into the Blues’ net in his first start since suffering a knee injury last season.

It was great start for the Reds but, sadly, our lead was too short-lived for, within two minutes, City had levelled the scores through Keke Simmonds. It was certainly a lively opening and a typical derby match feel with both sides going full throttle from the off.

United then had two good opportunities to regain the lead but Burkart was halted just as he was about to shoot and Lee O’Connor headed narrowly wide of the post. Instead, City moved into the lead in the 38th minute with a goal from Colin Rosler, son of former City striker Uwe, from Tommy Doyle's cross.

In the very next minute, United were presented with the chance to draw level when Chong was felled in the area, but Angel Gomes blazed his spot-kick over the goal guarded by his fellow Under-17 World Cup winner Curtis Anderson.

It proved a turning point as, moments later, United slipped further behind when winger Simmonds grabbed his second goal of the game with a shot that deflected in off Jake Barrett.

United had given themselves a mountain to climb and our plight became worse in the 73rd minute when City skipper Eric Garcia headed his side’s fourth goal, against the run of play after a spell of pressing by the visitors.

George Tanner and Gomes had promising shot saved by keeper Anderson and, ultimately, the Reds had to accept that it just wasn’t going to be our day with the team reduced to nine men at one point while a couple of players received treatment off the pitch.

United: Fojticek; Laird, O’Connor, Barrett (Tanner 46), B. Williams; Puigmal (Baars 65), Garner, Barlow, Chong (Levitt 65); Gomes; Burkart. Subs not used: Carney, Mellor.

UNDER-18S : WOLVES 3 MANCHESTER UNITED 2

Under-18 Premier League Cup Group F | Sir Jack Hayward Training Centre | Scorers: Samuels 24, 28, Whittingham 47; Mellor 72, Greenwood 88

Manchester United's Under-18s bowed out of the Premier League Cup on Saturday afternoon as Wolverhampton Wanderers inflicted a 3-2 defeat that defied the form book and the balance of play.

Kieran McKenna's side dominated possession throughout the game, including the period in which Austin Samuels rocked the young Reds back on their heels with a four-minute double. His pair of sucker punches came midway through the first half, and Joel Whittingham headed in a third goal for the hosts just after the break.

United fought back and reduced the arrears with goals from substitute D'Mani Mellor and Mason Greenwood but ultimately fell short of progressing from Group F.

The day began with all four teams in the group on three points apiece after two games played. But after table-topping Arsenal won 4-2 away at third-placed Stoke City in the earlier kick-off, it left the Reds needing to beat the bottom side Wolves by three clear goals.

There was early encouragement for that mission when United's lone striker Nishan Burkart rounded Wolves goalkeeper Jackson Smith but his composed attempt came back off the base of the left-hand post. However, the deadlock was eventually broken in the 24th minute, against the run of play, when Greenwood was dispossessed on the halfway line and Samuels tapped in from Brad Carr's crafty cutback.

Samuels's second goal, in the 28th minute, was more of a solo production as he charged into the left-hand channel, left one United centre-back Teden Mengi trailing and weaved inside the other, Di'Shon Bernard, to finish inside the near post with Reds goalkeeper Theo Richardson getting a hand to the ball but not with enough contact to stop it crossing the line.

Although Richardson conceded twice in the first half-hour, his opposite number Smith was much busier at the other end, having to edge away a low shot across his goal by Dylan Levitt and show a clean pair of hands to catch Brandon Williams's header when the left-back met Largie Ramazani's cross to the far post. New boy Aliou Traore tried his luck from distance on a couple of occasions as he looked to make his mark on his debut.

Hopes of a second-half recovery by United were dealt a huge blow immediately after the restart when Wolves used a short corner on the left to feed Taylor Perry. From his cross, the hosts' left-back Joel Whittingham, still up from the set-piece, leaped higher than his marker Traore and beat Richardson with a thumping header that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

McKenna made an attacking double substitution to send Mellor and Millen Baars into the fray, and later brought on Arnau Puigmal, and it was just after the latter's introduction when United pulled the first goal back. Mellor broke into the box from the right-hand side and drove in a fierce shot that packed too much power for Smith, making the score 3-1 in the 72nd minute.

Moments later, Greenwood threatened from the same area of the field but his low effort went marginally wide with the Wolves keeper scrambling across his goalmouth to make sure. In yet another attack instigated on the right, Baars looked up and played a dangerous ball into the six-yard box, only for a Wolves defender and two onrushing United players to end up in the net and the hosts cleared.

At the other end, Richardson had to move quickly across goal and use his fingertips to turn a shot by Wolves substitute Owen Otasowie onto the post. Some positive play on the flanks brought United a second goal in the 88th minute - Greenwood meeting a cross from Williams and beating Smith with a downward header that went in off the post - and there was almost a third when another header, by Puigmal from Levitt's centre, drifted just wide in injury time.

The Reds' rally had been impressive but ultimately wasn't enough to secure progress into the next round. Instead, McKenna's side finished third behind Wolves and Group F winners Arsenal.

United: Richardson; Tanner, Mengi, Bernard, Williams; Garner, Traore (Mellor 53); Ramazani (Baars 53), Greenwood, Levitt; Burkart (Puigmal 70). Substitutes not used: Carney, Galbraith.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 2 LIVERPOOL 2

Under-18 Premier League | The Cliff Training Ground | Scorers: Mellor 11, Puigmal 90+4; Millar 51, McAuley 60

Manchester United and Liverpool’s youngsters fought out a thoroughly entertaining 2-2 draw at The Cliff on Saturday, despite the Under-18 Premier League contest taking place in testing wintry conditions.

Half-time was reached with Kieran McKenna's United team ahead at 1-0 and the visitors reduced to ten men, but in a terrific fightback after the break, the Merseysiders clawed their way into the lead and held it until the hosts snatched a last-gasp leveller in the fourth minute of added time.

The game was given the green light following a pitch inspection by the match officials at 9.30am despite The Cliff’s legendary carpet being covered in a swathe of snow. The referee, Michael Crusham, and his assistants, decided that underneath the white stuff there was a perfectly playable surface, so the teams immediately began to ready themselves for the latest academy level clash between two of this country’s greatest clubs.

In the meantime, the lines on the pitch had to be cleared of snow and United's physio Russ Hayes contributed greatly to that process, to such a degree that he could claim to be the club's best sweeper!

Although the surface still looked anything but conducive to good football, both sides made a lively start and there were very few slips and problems with grip underfoot as the game unfolded in front of the hardy souls gathered on the river side of United's famous old training ground.

The hosts were having the lion’s share of the attacking in the opening phase and deservedly took the lead in the 12th minute when D’Mani Mellor latched on to an Aidan Barlow pass and beat Liverpool goalkeeper Vitos Vitelslav with a low shot. The young men in red shirts very nearly added a second goal in the very next minute when George Tanner went close with a header from Barlow’s cross.

It was a positive start from McKenna’s lads and the cause was given another boost in the 27th minute when Liverpool defender Adam Lewis was shown a red card by referee Crusham following a challenge on Tahith Chong.

The pitch was turning increasingly green as the game progressed towards half-time and it was certainly a clear vindication of the referee’s decision to allow the meeting to go ahead. Having said that, the half-time break brought another heavy fall of snow and as the second period commenced, the pitch was returning to its earlier unfamiliar colour.

Six minutes into the second spell, the visitors found a way through the United defence for Liam Millar to claim the equaliser. Worse was to follow nine minutes later when, with the game now taking place under The Cliff’s floodlights, the hosts' backline was breached again by substitute Glen McAuley.

McKenna sent on Millen Baars in the 68th minute and the United sub soon tested his luck with a long shot that just failed to find a way past Vitelslav.

The hosts picked up the tempo in the latter stages in search of a second goal, but Liverpool’s ten men were battling hard to retain their hard-fought lead.

Both Baars and Chong went close as the clock ticked ever faster towards the end, but it appeared that the best chances of the closing stages were going to fall to Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, who fired over from a great position, and Yasser Larouci, who looked certain to score before also failing to do so.

United were staring at defeat as Liverpool coach Steven Gerrard urged his charges to preserve their lead, but as the fourth minute of added time was reached, Mason Greenwood struck a curling low shot that seemed destined to creep inside the far post until Vitelslav got a glove to it. Unfortunately for the visitors' goalkeeper, he only parried to the waiting Spanish youngster Arnau Puigmal, who gleefully guided the ball into the net.

Talk about Christmas coming early, this game had all the trimmings – a wintry scene, excitement and a fair share of thrills for the fans watching at The Cliff and live on MUTV.

United: Fojticek; Tanner, Ercolani (Levitt 81), O’Connor, Laird; Chong, Traore (Baars 68), Garner, Barlow (Puigmal 87); Greenwood; Mellor. Substitutes not used: Williams B., Carney.

UNITED EXIT YOUTH CUP ON PENALTIES

FA Youth Cup third round | Pride Park | Scorers: Dixon 3, Bogle 24 | Chong 13, Barlow 57 | Derby win 3-1 on pens

Manchester United were beaten in the FA Youth Cup third round at Derby County, with the Rams winning a penalty shoot-out 3-1, following a 2-2 draw.

The Rams got off to the perfect start in front of the Pride Park fans with a fortunate early opener. The ball was cleared to Connor Dixon, who unleashed a hopeful volley that took a double deflection before finding its way past Alex Fojticek.

United's response to the setback was a positive one as Mason Greenwood, in for the injured Angel Gomes, did well on the right to set up Aidan Barlow for a clipped effort that struck the bar. Undeterred, Tahith Chong collected a stray pass in the Derby half, embarked on a purposeful run and finished clinically with his left foot.

Greenwood flashed a free-kick wide as Kieran McKenna's side looked in control, only for George Tanner to concede a set-piece that led to the Rams' second goal. Jayden Bogle whipped it in towards the near post and it evaded Tanner's lunge and deceived Fojticek to provide a real blow.

Fojticek saved from Jason Knight and Barlow sent an attempt over the bar as the Reds went in a goal behind at the break. As snow started to fall, conditions became more and more difficult but Barlow levelled matters after a brilliant move. The England Under-17 international was heavily involved in the build-up and arrived on cue to net with a stooping header, when substitute Millen Baars's cross flicked off a defender's head.

Lee Buchanan hit the bar for the Rams as both sides created chances with the hosts pressing but risking being caught by United's fluid football on the break. Extra-time was required to separate the two sides, who dealt with the wintry weather admirably, but the additional period turned into a real challenge for United.

Substitute Aliou Traore was shown a straight red card and, with Dylan Levitt already struggling to make any contribution due to an injury, Chong was taken off after lengthy treatment towards the end. Effectively with eight fit men, the Reds managed to gamely hold out but the shoot-out went all the way of the hosts.

Fojticek did save the first Derby attempt but skipper Lee O'Connor had already missed, and only the impressive Jimmy Garner managed to find the net as United exited the competition on a freezing evening in the East Midlands.

United: Fojticek; Tanner, Ercolani, O’Connor, Laird; Levitt, Garner; Chong, Greenwood (Baars 46), Barlow (Traore 62); Burkart (Mellor 70). Subs not used: Carney, B. Williams.

UNDER-18S: SUNDERLAND 1 UNITED 2

Under-18 Premier League | Academy of Light | Scorers: Chong 32 pen, 79; Dunne 39

Manchester United’s Under-18s emerged from the winter break to register a confident and impressive victory over Sunderland on Wearside.

Tahith Chong was United’s hero with two goals, one in each half, as Kieran McKenna’s side dominated the match in overcast and blustery conditions to keep our title hopes well and truly alive.

Both sides made something of a tentative start to the game with United, kitted out in black shirts and white shorts to avoid a clash with Sunderland’s normal red and white stripes, perhaps enjoying a little more of the early possession.

Genuine openings were rare during the opening exchanges, but nevertheless both sides looked lively and refreshed following the festive break.

Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson was called into action more than United‘s Alex Fojticek, but there was nothing very testing to worry him until the 32nd minute, when he was challenged to try and prevent Chong’s penalty from finding the net.

Ethan Laird had been felled after bursting into the Black Cats’ penalty area and Chong made no mistake with a perfectly struck spot-kick past Patterson.

United were had certainly captured the initiative and were looking good to increase the lead before the break but, completely against the run of play, as so often happens, Sunderland grabbed an equaliser.

It arrived six minutes before the break when a rare lapse in United’s defence allowed Sunderland skipper Jordan Hickey to go clear and unselfishly he picked out striker Robbie Dunne, who gleefully hit the ball into the net.

United should have gone in at half-time holding the lead, but it is safe to say they would have been more than content with their overall performance in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half took on much the same pattern as the first had concluded in, with the visitors continuing to display more of an attacking appetite.

Laird, the Reds’ right-back, continued his excellent overlapping form from the first half and on one occasion his side-footed shot almost found the target.

There was a flashpoint in the 72nd minute, when substitute Largie Ramazani was tripped by Sunderland’s Tom Scothern. The referee awarded the free-kick to United but, in the heated skirmish that followed, the home team was reduced to 10 men when Tom Howard was red-carded. United’s Ramazani also picked up a booking for his involvement in the unsavoury incident.

This unexpected development would surely act in United’s favour during the time that remained, and so it proved with 11 minutes left on the clock.

And it was Ramazani, who had obviously put to the back of his mind the earlier caution, who opened up the Sunderland defence with brilliant threaded ball to Chong.

The Reds’ goalscoring hero on the day took the pass in his stride before rounding Patterson and tapping the ball into the unguarded net.

It was proving to be a really enjoyable day for United’s Chong, but a less than happy one for Patterson, who overall had contributed hugely to Sunderland’s cause.

There was another bad-tempered interlude involving several players from either side, in time added on, but on this occasion it passed without the match official taking any action.

It was deserved win for United and they did particularly well in the closing stages to take maximum benefit of the imbalance in personnel.

United: Fojticek; Laird, Dunne, O’Connor, Tanner; Galbraith (Greenwood 60), Puigmal, Levitt, Chong, Mellor (McGhee 83), Baars (Ramazani 60). Substitutes not used: Bernard, Thompson.

U18S: STOKE CITY 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 4

Under-18 Premier League | Clayton Wood | Scorers: Szereto 50, 90 (pen); Baars 33, Burkart 45, Ramazani 85, Greenwood 88

Manchester United’s youngsters sit proudly at the summit of the Premier League Under-18 North table, following a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Stoke City at Clayton Wood on Saturday.

Leaders Liverpool were in FA Youth Cup fourth-round action against Arsenal and Manchester City’s game with Middlesbrough finished 2-2, so United’s result meant that the Reds leapfrogged both clubs.

There was plenty of cloud cover above Stoke City’s Clayton Wood training centre and a brief flurry of snow ahead of this Premier League Under-18 North fixture, but the playing surface was in excellent condition despite the harsh weather that has recently been sweeping the country.

Snow was still in the air as the game commenced following a well-observed minute’s silence in memory of former West Bromwich Albion striker Cyrille Regis, who passed away earlier this week.

United were quickly into their stride and looked particularly threatening down the wings with Dutch duo Tahith Chong and Millen Baars raiding at every opportunity.

Nishan Burkart almost gave United the lead with a cheeky lofted shot, in the 18th minute, when he spotted keeper Mitchell Allen off his line. Dylan Levitt tried his luck, a few minutes later, with a long distance strike that wasn’t far away from finding the target. Then, in the 33rd minute, United opened the scoring when Burkart’s beautifully threaded pass found Baars who finished the move with an angled drive past Allen.

United were starting to dominate the contest, but it wasn’t until seconds before the break that Burkart doubled the advantage with a left-footed finish after being picked out beautifully by Aidan Barlow.

The home side started the second half with a spring in their step and, within six minutes, they had halved the advantage when Krisztofer Szereto met Venancio Da Silva’s corner before hitting his shot high into Alex Fojticek’s net.

United rallied and tried to hit back after Stoke’s goal and, with an ounce of luck, both Chong and Baars could have restored the two-goal advantage.

Coach Kieran McKenna rang the changes in the second half utilising his maximum allowance of three substitutes and it proved to be a masterstroke.

Two of his replacements, Largie Ramazani and Mason Greenwood found the net in the closing stages to rubber-stamp an excellent day for the team and even Stoke’s late penalty, scored by Szereto after a foul by Max Dunne, couldn’t dilute the celebrations.

With five minutes left, Ramazani crashed home a first-time effort when Ethan Laird's cross went all the way through to him and Greenwood's goal came when the 16-year-old was left in the clear when presented with the ball from a Allen goal-kick to stroke home with his left foot.

United: Fojticek; Laird, Dunne, O’Connor, Tanner; Garner; Chong, Levitt (Puigmal 84), Barlow, Baars (Ramazani 77); Burkart (Greenwood 70). Subs not used: Thompson, Bernard.

YOUNG UNITED TRIO NAMED IN ENGLAND SQUAD

Three Manchester United youngsters have been named in the England Under 17s squad for the Algarve Tournament taking place this month.

Defender Ethan Laird and midfielders Mason Greenwood and Jimmy Garner are part of a 21-man roster who will head out to Portugal next week as Steve Cooper’s side step up preparations for the European Championships on home soil in May.

The young trio's inclusion is further recognition for an impressive season so far in Kieran McKenna’s Under-18s side, who currently sit top of the Premier League U18 North table after 13 games.

They also follow in the footsteps of Angel Gomes, who helped England win the Under 17s World Cup in India back in October.

The Young Lions face opposition from host nation Portugal, Germany and Netherlands at the annual competition, which takes place in and around Faro, starting next week.

They kick off against Portugal on Friday 9 February at the Sport Park Nora in Ferreiras, before facing Germany two days later at the Algarve Stadium in Almancil. The competition is then rounded off on Tuesday 13 February, when England face the Dutch at the Algarve Stadium.

UNDER-18S ARRANGE RANGERS FRIENDLY

Manchester United's Under-18s have arranged a Valentine's Day friendly against Rangers.

The youth fixture will take place with a noon kick-off at the Ibrox outfit's training centre and enables the youngsters to enjoy another game in a new environment.

Kieran McKenna's Reds recently beat Aston Villa 5-3 in a friendly, following an Under-17s outing against Birmingham City, and the importance of creating a games programme tailored to suit the group as a whole cannot be underestimated.

"We played Aston Villa last weekend here [at the Aon Training Complex], which was a good game," explained McKenna to MUTV. "It was a really good game. We tend to get, touch wood, plenty of goals when we play out on the match pitch and it was the same last weekend. Hopefully, it'll be the same in the league against Derby this weekend."

UNDER-18S: UNITED 6 DERBY 3

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Garner 16, Greenwood 45,74 Burkart 60,90 Minkley og 71 | Knight 69, Proctor 77, Jibodu 78

Manchester United's exciting Under-18s beat Derby County 6-3 in an open encounter at the Aon Training Complex.

Mason Greenwood and substitute Nishan Burkart both claimed doubles as a see-saw battle unfolded after the break, in particular, after the Reds led 2-0 at the interval.

Jimmy Garner opened the scoring in the 16th minute, spraying the ball out wide to Millen Baars on the right and arriving with perfect timing in the box to stretch to prod home when the Dutchman's shot deflected to him.

Jayden Mitchell-Lawson had already hit a post with a rasping drive and Derby had their fair share of chances with Alex Fojticek kept busy. Baars and Brandon Williams also had chances for the hosts before Mason Greenwood turned superbly in the box to fire goalwards, with the ball ricocheting off keeper Matthew Yates and over the line.

In the second half, things really livened up when Burkart replaced the injured Baars as the wiss striker took only three minutes to tap in after Largie Ramazani ran onto a Greenwood pass and forced a save out of Yates. Greenwood carved out opportunities for Ramazani and Garner that almost produced a fourth goal but, instead, the Rams pulled one back.

Top scorer Jason Knight chested the ball down and rifled a low drive beyond Fojticek, only for United to respond two minutes later, as Arnau Puigmal fed Burkart and Callum Minkley put through his own net when Yates blocked the shot.

In the 74th minute, Puigmal's beautiful return pass allowed Greenwood to plunder his second from a tight angle to make it 5-1. It looked a case of game-over, only for Proctor to latch onto Ethan Galbraith's scuffed clearance to find the net and Ayomide Jibodu profited when Fojticek palmed a cross into his path to further reduce the deficit.

Derby made life uncomfortable but were undone again at the death when Burkart raced through, showed his strength and calmly lofted his finish over Yates for number six.

United: Fojticek; Tanner, O'Connor (Bernard 67), Dunne, Williams; Garner (Galbraith 67), Levitt; Ramazani, Puigmal, Baars (Burkart 57); Greenwood. Subs not used: Thompson, Mellor.

UNDER-19S: BRODARAC 0 UNITED 2

UEFA Youth League play-off | Stadion Shopping Centre| Scorers: Boonen 19, Ivancevic og 30

Manchester United clinched a place in the UEFA Youth League round of 16 on the back of two first-half goals and a professional performance in testing circumstances in Belgrade.

Indy Boonen set the youngsters on the way to victory in the play-off and Brodarac defender Mihajlo Ivancevic put through his own net to double the advantage.

The Reds were without Luca Ercolani, Aidan Barlow and Tahith Chong, while Ethan Laird picked up a late knock despite being named on the bench. The hosts missed Lazar Kozic, who had been the star man in the earlier rounds but joined Dutch outfit Fortuna Sittard last month.

Following a minute's silence to remember the Munich Air Disaster, the artificial 3G pitch in Zozdovac and some strong-arm tactics made this a challenge from the outset. Ivancevic went straight through the back of Joshua Bohui in the very first minute, leaving the striker with a sore back.

Angel Gomes was the next Red to be left in agony when caught by Milos Toseski and Uros Lukic showed the Serbian's threat with a couple of decent attempts that were not far away. However, Nicky Butt's men constructed by far the best move of the game to open the scoring.

Tyrell Warren won the ball and it eventually ended up with Boonen, who weaved his way into a shooting position on the edge of the area and fired goalwards, with keeper Mihajlo Zravkovic only able to push it into the net.

Warren was heavily involved in the second goal on the half-hour mark as he picked up a corner by Gomes and managed to squeeze in a cross with his left foot. The centre came off Ivancevic's head and ended up in the back of Zravkovic's net.

Zravkovic had to palm away a fine effort by Gomes, who displayed magnificent footwork inside the box, but the hosts remained in contention and fiercely competitive. D'Mani Mellor came on at the break for Nishan Burkart, to play up front with Bohui switching to the left, and he supplied boundless energy on his Under-19s debut.

Bohui was subjected to another poor challenge when Ognjen Mitrovic went in needlessly high on the forward and was fortunate to escape with a yellow card. Brodarac made life difficult with Matija Babovic failing to get any power in his header from Mitrovic's centre and Srdan Kocic's free-kick needing to be scrambled around the post by Reds keeper Alex Fojticek.

Several flare-ups appeared inevitable, with Uros Lukic and Ro-Shaun Williams both booked after a confrontation at a corner but Butt's side kept their cool. Mellor had a shot blocked at source and then flashed a drive the wrong side of the far post following approach work by the excellent Jimmy Garner and Gomes.

Babovic's curler sailed narrowly wide and, with it, the Serbian champions' hopes of getting anything out of the tie evaporated as United kept a clean sheet to advance to the last 16 of the competition.

United: Fojticek; Warren, R. Williams, O'Connor, Tanner; Garner, Hamilton; Boonen (B. Williams 83), Gomes, Burkart (Mellor 46); Bohui (Levitt 77). Subs not used: Thompson, Dunne, Kenyon, Laird.

MUTV is showing extended highlights of the game at 23:00 GMT on Wednesday night.

DUNNE: OUR BELGRADE TRIP WAS SO IMPORTANT

Manchester United Under-19s defender Max Dunne believes this week's trip to Belgrade to face FK Brodarac in the UEFA Youth League was an enriching experience for the entire squad.

Nicky Butt’s young players secured a place in Friday’s round-of-16 draw with a 2-0 triumph against physical opponents on an artificial pitch but they will have learned much off the field as well. The three-day trip included visits to the venues where the Busby Babes played their final game [Partizan Stadium] and had their last meal together [Hotel Majestic] before the tragic Munich Air Disaster 60 years ago.

With several VIP guests helping to bring knowledge and understanding of the terrible accident, it was certainly an educational exercise for the Academy prospects.

“It was definitely an experience for me,” Dunne told ManUtd.com. “I knew parts of the story and what went on but a few of the players didn’t know as much and, coming away, you learn a lot more.

“When I saw it first hand, like on the first night when we saw pictures of the players who were in the same room as us, it took me aback a bit. It’s a crazy coincidence that 60 years to the very day, we happened to be in Belgrade for a Youth League match.

“I think it was very important for the lads because obviously I’m lucky coming from Manchester, and a Manchester United family, so I knew about it. Some knew about it due to the size of the club but not to that extent. We all took something from the trip and all learned something.”

The Reds could face familiar opposition in the next round of the European competition with four of the seven options in the draw being English clubs [Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham]. Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Porto also lie in wait.

“It was a physical test against Brodarac and a case of going out there with a competitive attitude for a physical challenge," said Dunne, reflecting on how his team reached the last 16.

"I think the lads did well, especially in those conditions as it’s not often we play on astroturf.”

The centre-back signed a first professional contract with the club recently and is back to fitness after suffering an ankle-ligament injury.

“Obviously, being from Manchester and supporting United, it’s a boyhood dream to turn professional with the club,” Dunne said. "Nicky Butt has been telling me how I've been doing and what I need to improve.

"I signed the contract just after I turned 17 but I got told about it before my birthday so it was like a special present. My family were really happy, as was I."

UNDER-19S LEARN YOUTH LEAGUE OPPONENTS

Manchester United’s Under-19s will take on Liverpool away in the UEFA Youth League round of 16, and could face Manchester City in the quarter-finals, after the draw was made on Friday.

The one-off game on Merseyside will be played on Tuesday 20 or Wednesday 21 February with the winners going on to visit the victors between City and Inter Milan in the last-eight stage.

The trip to Liverpool comes after Nicky Butt’s side passed a stiff test in Belgrade on Wednesday night, beating Serbian champions Brodarac 2-0 thanks to an Indy Boonen strike and an own goal by Mihajlo Ivancevic.

The young Reds had to navigate that play-off match after finishing as runners-up behind group winners Basel, albeit only on goal difference.

Just four games away from the final in Nyon on 23 April, Butt’s team face a tough assignment against Liverpool but will hope to reach the quarter-finals of the prestigious competition, which is in its fifth season and is for all under-age players from the 32 senior clubs that qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

The exact date, kick-off time and venue for the round-of-16 tie will be confirmed in due course.

UEFA YOUTH LEAGUE ROUND OF 16 DRAW IN FULL

Bayern Munich v Real Madrid
Manchester City v Inter Milan
Atletico Madrid v FC Basel
FC Porto v FC Salzburg
Paris St-Germain v FC Barcelona
Liverpool v Manchester United
Tottenham Hotspur v AS Monaco

UNDER-18S: NEWCASTLE 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Under-18 Premier League North | Newcastle United Academy | Scorers: Sorensen 53, Goodridge 90; Chong 68

Manchester United's table-topping Under-18s slipped to only a third league defeat of the season in a keenly-fought contest away to Newcastle United.

It was goalless at half-time in an incident-packed game that saw the home side score twice after the break with the Reds' solitary goal from Tahith Chong sandwiched in between.

The visitors finished the match with ten men after Ethan Galbraith was red-carded following an altercation with the referee.

This meeting at Newcastle United’s Academy ground could be looked upon as an appetiser for the Premier League game between the clubs’ first teams which will take place just down the road at St James’s Park on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams went into it on the back of resounding victories last weekend with Kieran McKenna’s lads scoring twice as many goals as Derby County in a nine-goal thriller at Carrington, whilst the Magpies were taking all three points with a 4-1 win away at West Bromwich Albion.

The Reds' travelling party had left the rain behind in Manchester, but it was cloudy and quite cold in this corner of the North East at kick-off time and from that moment it was clear that this was going to be a lively encounter as the play continually switched from one end to the other.

There was little to choose between the sides during the first segment of the game with clearcut chances proving to be very rare. Newcastle’s Adam Wilson had a shot blocked by George Tanner and striker Elias Sorensen had a well-struck drive comfortably fielded by Alex Fojtíček.

The Reds lost Aliou Traore to injury in the 38th minute when a clumsy challenge by Magpies skipper Matty Longstaff left him incapable of carrying on. Longsstaff was booked while substitute Aidan Barlow was drafted in to replace Traore.

The second half, which was played in bright sunshine with a clear blue sky, came to life in the 53rd minute when Sorensen put his side in front with a shot that just squeezed inside the post.

McKenna's side then proceeded to have the best spell of the afternoon with Barlow leading the way with a couple of encouraging shots towards Otto Huuhtanen’ s goal. Then, in the 68th minute, Chong put the visitors back on track when he grabbed the equaliser with a low drive past Huuhtanen.

The Reds looked certain to move into the lead when, ten minutes from time, a penalty was awarded against the home side for handball. However, Huuhtanen guessed Chong's chosen direction correctly and denied him a second goal with a decent save.

As the game reached added time it seemed certain that it would end all-square, but that theory was shattered when Newcastle substitute Mace Goodridge hit the winner past Fojtíček.

The Reds' sudden gloom was increased in the dying embers of the game when substitute Galbraith was given his marching orders for dissent.

Manchester United: Fojtíček; Tanner, Dunne, O’Connor, Williams B., Puigmal (Galbraith 69), Levitt; Chong, Traore (Barlow 36), Ramazani; Mellor (McGhee 75). Substitutes not used: Bernard, Thompson

UNDER-18S FRIENDLY: RANGERS 2 UNITED 3

Friendly | Rangers Academy | Scorers: Kelly 47, Wilson 78 | Levitt 10, Elanga 63,81

Manchester United's youngsters played a friendly against the Rangers Academy on Wednesday, securing a 3-2 win in an entertaining game.

D'Mani Mellor had an early effort ruled out for offside before Dylan Levitt headed the Reds in front with 10 minutes on the clock. Andrew Dallas hit the bar in response but United maintained the lead into the interval.

Two minutes after the break, Stephen Kelly levelled matters, only for the visitors to react well, with Mellor and Levitt unlucky not to regain the lead. Anthony Elanga, on for Dion McGhee, then scored within two minutes after his entrance as a substitute from a corner, only for Aidan Wilson to again equalise for the Gers.

Elanga smacked in the winner from outside the box with nine minutes remaining, registering his second of the game, to seal victory, although the main priority of the trip was to further the teenagers' experience against different opposition.

UNDER-19S SET FOR LIVERPOOL YOUTH CLASH

Manchester United's Head of Academy Nicky Butt says he had a feeling the Reds would draw fierce rivals Liverpool in the UEFA Youth League as he looks forward to facing Steven Gerrard's Merseysiders at Prenton Park on Wednesday.

The Reds do battle in the 15:00 GMT kick-off and Butt has echoed Gerrard's thoughts that it is a game he would love to have played in at a similar age. The challenge is for the players to rise to the occasion and perform to the peak of their powers on this big stage.

"I think it's good for all different reasons," Butt told ManUtd.com. "It doesn't disrupt the weekly training plan too much. Obviously, going away to eastern Europe and different places can mess up the training week and have a knock-on effect for the other teams. But the main thing is it's such a great draw against the big rivals of the club. It's the Champions League and it's massive for our kids and we're really looking forward to it.

"Actually, I had a feeling it would be them, being honest with you. Some of our lads need to rise to pick their games up to a new level because that is what they [Liverpool] will do. That's what happens in Liverpool-Manchester United games.

"I think it's a really good competition for the kids. When I was growing up, with Stevie, the biggest game you play in is the FA Youth Cup at that level. Even though that's big, the next thing the big clubs want to win is European Cups - it's the pinnacle really. First and foremost, you want to win your domestic league but the Champions League has a real aura and prestige about it. Like Stevie has said, I'm the same and I would love to have played in a game like this. I say it to my lads all the time - they should be really passionate about these games as they're so special and it's a small insight into the first team and what some of their heroes do week in and week out.

"These are big games - there's not getting away from it. Whenever you play your rivals, whether you're 12 years old, or 36 or 37 at the end of your career, it's massive. Certainly for me, when I was a player, it was the first game I looked for on the fixture list when I was on holiday. They know how important it is and how passionate it is going to be. Ultimately, Steven Gerrard and his coaching staff will be saying the same to them. They're very much like us, with a massive history in Europe, very passionate about their city and the football club, like we are. They're getting the same messages as us and we need to go right from the first whistle and not leave anything on the pitch."

The short trip to Tranmere Rovers' home will be in contrast to the trip to Belgrade in the play-off to face Brodarac in unusual surroundings, on a 3G surface at the top of a shopping centre in freezing conditions in the Serbian capital.

"You want to get a lot of different environments within the competition," Butt added. "We had one last time with the weather and the pitch and going into the unknown. Now it's a bit more familiar for us, only an hour down the road, and most of them have played against each other several times. But take nothing away from the game - I've told them it's one they've got to be up for if we don't want to come unstuck.

"I was looking back at the Brodarac game and maybe I was a bit harsh beforehand and a bit at half-time. If you look at the conditions, it was a really tough place to go to play football. We didn't really play football, we just dug it out, and that's something you learn. Everyone at our level in football wants to play the perfect football match but I don't think there is one."

If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the game will go straight to a penalty shoot-out with Manchester City awaiting the victors in the next round.

"I'm not one for practising penalties," explained Butt. "You can practice all you want but, unless you go running around the pitch for 96 minutes and then put a few thousand behind the goal, you can't replicate it. They do some of it with the technique work, week in and week out, but I don't think it's the right message practising them. It's not the first team and a needs must that we have to win it that way. It's about enjoying it, the Manchester United way, and if I was sitting them down already and saying you five will be on penalties, it sends the wrong message.

"I hope we get a good attendance, even though I think a later kick-off would have given people more time to get in from school or work. We'll see but we want a chance for them to play in a stadium with a crowd. It'd be better to play a bit later but those are the rules of the competition."

As for the team news, several players have been drafted into the UEFA Youth League squad but that will not necessarily mean they will be involved.

"We've got a few who have got their international clearance," explained Butt. "The new signings, so we've just added them onto it. It's not like it's a massive thing as you can have up to 40 players. They're clear to play so why wouldn't you put them in the squad? You don't know what's going to happen in football. One minute, someone can be struggling in the Under-15s, Under-16s or Under-17s and they get one or two games and are flying.

"That's the reason behind that - all the lads will get a chance if they are on the level to experience this great competition. Everyone is fine - there are one or two little niggles but nothing to worry about. I've got a full squad to pick from."

TANNER FULLY FOCUSED

Defender George Tanner performed well in the 2-0 win at Brodarac in the previous round and is keen to help the Reds progress further in the competition.

"It's a good draw - there's huge rivalry so it's a massive game for us," said United full-back Tanner. "I think Liverpool are a good test. They are up there in the Under-18 league and there's big competition between us two at the moment.

"We play them in the last league game and it's very tight at the top of the table so playing them on Wednesday can leave us in good stead for that as well. I know a lot will be made of Nicky Butt coming up against Steven Gerrard, after their rivalry on the pitch, but we don't really worry about that. We'll focus on our game really.

"It's the biggest competition we're going to play in at Under-19 level. It's not often you get a chance to play in Europe and it's good experience for us all. I wouldn't say it's disappointing to draw an English side as we've been away and got that experience of playing foreign teams. We've got to do it against an English team now. We've done well as a squad getting through the group stages and we'll see how far we can go."

The Merseysiders are without injured centre-forward Rhian Brewster but fellow striker Ben Woodburn is available.

MUTV are showing highlights of the game at 23:00 GMT on Wednesday.

UNDER-19S: LIVERPOOL 2 UNITED 0

UEFA Youth League | Prenton Park | Scorers: Woodburn 11, Camacho 77

Manchester United's youngsters were undone by goals from Liverpool's Ben Woodburn and Rafael Camacho in the UEFA Youth League round-of-16 tie at Prenton Park.

The home side quickly gained the upper hand on a difficult surface, with Tranmere Rovers having played Macclesfield Town on Tuesday night, and made inroads towards Alex Fojticek's goal. Woodburn had a shot blocked and the overworked Ro-Shaun Williams cleared a cross from the dangerous Curtis Jones.

An opening goal duly arrived in the 11th minute when Neco Williams crossed from the right to pick out a free Woodburn in the box. Fojticek could not keep the header out, as he pushed it into the top corner of the net.

Bobby Adekanye and Liam Millar broke to tee up Jones for another chance and Woodburn fired over following good work by Millar. Tyrell Warren, playing at left-back, hacked a Jones shot away as the home fans looked to greet a second goal.

By far the Reds' best move of the half came six minutes before the break when Ethan Laird escaped down the right and delivered a telling ball into the middle. Tahith Chong did everything right, meeting it on the full, but his volley crashed back off the woodwork with Kamil Grabara beaten.

Nicky Butt's side managed another effort on goal when Joshua Bohui wriggled free but shot off target when having other options in the box. At the other end, Elijah Dixon-Bonner let fly from distance and the deflected attempt clipped the bar on its way over.

Butt's team-talk had some effect with Laird pushing further forward and soon bursting forward to pick out Aidan Barlow. The midfielder elected to shoot and Grabara clawed it away in spectacular fashion. The Reds pressed higher up the pitch and Bohui robbed Grabara to set up Chong, only for the Dutchman's finish towards an inviting net to lack power and Conor Masterson was able to block.

Dixon-Bonner lashed wide at the other end to prompt a spell of more control by the Merseysiders, with Jones extending Fojticek with a curler. However, United remained very much in the tie with Ro-Shaun Williams's header from Angel Gomes's free-kick lacking the direction to beat Grabara.

Chong started to hit top gear and was unlucky when crashing a drive just the wrong side of the post as he and Laird looked lively down the right with the visitors desperately chasing an equaliser. The prospect of getting caught on the break was clear, with Jones spurning one opening, and so it proved when substitute Camacho wrapped it up.

Gomes's hopeful ball was cleared with Woodburn then shrugging off the United no.10 to free Camacho with the outside of his boot. The Portuguese wide man unleashed a fierce drive that flew over Fojticek to effectively settle the tie. Despite a double change with forwards Nishan Burkart and D'Mani Mellor thrown on, there was no way back. Consequently, it is Steven Gerrard's men who progress to meet Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the competition.

United: Fojticek; Laird, R. Williams, O'Connor (Burkart 81), Warren (Tanner 60); Garner (Mellor 81), Hamilton, Barlow; Chong, Gomes, Bohui. Subs not used: Kovar, Ercolani, B. Williams, Boonen.

wah sayang sekali kalah melawan Liverpool, padahal kalau kalah Derby Manchester U-19 menanti :hajar1:

UNDER 18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 4 EVERTON 1

United’s Under-18s consolidated their place at the summit of the Premier League table with a resounding victory over second-placed Everton at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday.

Mason Greenwood grabbed two of the goals, with Largie Ramazani and James Garner also finding the net to stretch the young Reds' lead to four points at the top of the table.

It was a beautifully sunny day in this little corner of South Manchester, but that was contrasted by a bitterly cold wind that blew through the training ground.

This first against second clash certainly lived up to its pre-match billing, as both teams went flat out from the start. United started the game holding a one point advantage over Everton with the Goodison Park club having one game in hand, so it was imperative that the Reds should take the three points in order to keep their title charge on track.

The Reds made an encouraging start with Aidan Barlow going close in the opening minutes of the match. Then, in the 11th minute, United made the early breakthrough with Barlow crossing to Mason Greenwood who made no mistake from close range.

Barlow and James Garner both went close as the Reds continued make the pace and push forward looking to add another goal. Everton were by no means out of the picture and they certainly looked dangerous when they went forward. And they showed that United needed to be on their guard when, in the 31st minute, full back Nathan Moore found striker Ellis Simms who gleefully put the Toffees on level terms.

However, Everton’s parity was short-lived for within sixty seconds United had restored their lead with a goal from Largie Ramazani following good work from Brandon Williams. Four minutes before the break and United extended their lead with a terrific long-range curling shot from James Garner. The wind may have played some part in this spectacular goal but the end product was definitely what Garner intended.

The same player almost claimed his second of the game, on the stroke of half-time, but his shot skimmed the crossbar.

The second half mirrored the first in many ways with United always having the edge, but nothing could be taken for granted until twelve minutes from time when Greenwood grabbed his second goal to rubber-stamp an important victory and keep Kieran McKenna’s lads firmly in the title race driving seat.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 6 WEST BROM 1

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Greenwood 3, 15, Burkart 32, Williams own goal 38, Barlow 56, Puigmal 90+1; Azaz 85

Manchester United's Under-18s produced a powerful performance to sweep aside West Bromwich Albion 6-1 at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday.

The young Reds were in the driving seat after just 15 minutes, by which time Mason Greenwood had scored both of his goals beginning with a superb solo effort.

Nishan Burkart followed Greenwood onto the scoresheet just after the half-hour mark before an own goal by Williams ensured the hosts went into the half-time break with a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Aidan Barlow weighed in with United's fifth strike in the 56th minute but the Reds' scoring spree was paused until Arnau Puigmal netted in injury time, his goal making it 6-1 after Azaz had pulled back a late consolation for the Baggies.

UNDER-18S: WOLVES 0 UNITED 2

Under-18 Premier League | Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground | Scorer: Greenwood (90+2, 90+4)

Two goals in added time from Mason Greenwood saw Manchester United beat Wolves in a keenly-fought contest to stretch our lead our lead at the summit of the Premier League Under-18 North table.

The game looked be heading for a stalemate until really late pressure saw United pull it out of the fire in the nick of time.

Kieran McKenna made six changes to the starting line-up that scorched to a 6-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday morning. That convincing victory over the Baggies put our Under-18s four points ahead of second-placed Liverpool in the league table with the Merseysiders having one game in hand.

The Reds’ recent form has been exceptional and McKenna's men were certainly hoping to maintain that level of performance at The Jack Hayward Training Centre, Wolves’ well-appointed facility just a couple of miles from the club’s famous Molineux Stadium.

Both teams made a lively start to the game, but there was very little in way of goalmouth excitement during the first 15 minutes. Wolves looked to have made an opening for themselves when striker Astin Samuels broke free with United’s goal in his sights, but rapid reactions from Matej Kovar saw the young keeper sprint from his goal to clear the danger.

Kovar was in action again a few minutes later to comfortably collect Owen Otasowie's long-range shot, while both James Garner and Greenwood had near misses as the half-time whistle approached.

The game continued in a similar vein after the break with both teams seeing plenty of the ball without any end product.

Dion McGhee was inches from giving his side the lead, in the 55th minute, when his beautifully hit free-kick struck the crossbar.

The game took a dramatic turn with six minutes remaining when Wolves’ central defender and skipper Dion Sanderson was sent off following a foul on Brandon Williams. The referee, Blake Antrobus, consulted one of his assistants before directing Sanderson to the dressing room.

United hadn’t failed to score in all of the previous league games this season and with the seconds flying by that excellent record looked set to fall. Then in the second minute of added time Lee O’Connor crossed from the right and Greenwood rose above the rest to head past Jackson Smith in the Wolves goal.

United were unsurprisingly delighted, but there was more to come when less than two minutes later Greenwood found space in the area before firing home the second goal for his fourth brace in five matches.

United: Kovar; Laird, O’Connor, Bernard, Williams B.; McGhee (Levitt 71), Galbraith (Puigmal 71), Garner, Barlow; Mellor (Burkart 71), Greenwood. Subs not used: Tanner, Fojticek.

UNDER-18S: UNITED 5 BLACKBURN 0

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Burkart 20, Garner 30, Greenwood 49, Levitt 65, Mellor 68

Manchester United’s Under-18s stormed to another convincing victory in blizzard conditions at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday to keep us well on track in the title race.

The young Reds, who had rattled home six goals in four previous home games this season, looked all set for a fifth half-dozen, but ultimately had to be content on this occasion with a handful.

The weather prediction was that there was a chance of snow in the region - well they definitely got that one right because this Premier League Under-18 match was played out in incredibly heavy snow, which was horizontal at times, and that was punctuated with bursts of bright, mildly warm sunshine.

The elements did little to interfere with the game that in the early stages saw possession shared between the teams. United perhaps were a little more inventive in front of goal and certainly looked the more likely to break the deadlock. And, in the 20th minute, they Reds duly moved into the lead with a goal out of the blue when Nishan Burkart tried his luck with a curling shot from the right wing that found the top corner with Rovers’ keeper Ben Winterbottom stranded.

Ten minutes later and United doubled the lead with James Garner tapping home after taking a short pass from Mason Greenwood. United were well into their stride by this time and looking more than capable of adding to the tally.

Half-time was reached without further addition to the scoreline, but within four minutes of the restart Mason Greenwood grabbed a third goal following excellent work from Millen Baars.

Kieran McKenna then made three changes, but it did nothing to alter the pattern of play and in the 65th-minute Baars was the provider again, this time for Dylan Levitt to be the beneficiary.

D’Mani Mellor rounded off the scoring three minutes later to cap another impressive performance in extremely testing conditions.

United: Fojtíček; Tanner, O’Connor, Bernard, Williams B; Garner (Mellor 61), Puigmal (Galbraith 61); Burkart, Levitt, Baars; Greenwood (McGhee 61). Subs not used: Barlow, Kovar.

REDS BOW OUT IN DALLAS CUP SHOOT-OUT

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...0,26,2000,1152

Manchester United were beaten 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out by Arsenal after a 2-2 draw in the semi-final of the Dallas Cup in Texas.

Kieran McKenna's side started brightly and went ahead in the 20th minute, when Largie Ramazani calmly slotted past Arthur Okonkwo, following a James Garner pass. A second goal arrived eight minutes before the interval. Garner, who has enjoyed an outstanding tournament, capped a fine move to fire home a Mason Greenwood assist and put the Reds firmly in the driving seat.

However, substitute Bukayo Saka pulled one back soon after half-time and levelled just past the hour mark, when his effort went in off the bar. Both sides had chances in extra-time, with United keeper Matej Kovar deflecting a shot by Robert Lee Burton against the woodwork and Tahith Chong going close for McKenna's side.

Benson and Clarke missed in the shoot-out for Arsenal, only for Garner and D'Mani Mellor to also fail from the spot. Although Jake Kenyon found the net, as Chong had with the first penalty, Ethan Galbraith's attempt was saved by Okonkwo to take Arsenal through to meet Tigres in the final.

Tigres, who drew 2-2 with United in the first game of the event, beat Monterrey 4-1 in the other semi-final.

The young Reds will return to England to concentrate on trying to win the Under-18 Premier League.

UNDER-18S: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 UNITED 3

Under-18 Premier League North | Scorers: Greenwood 42, 46, Levitt 70; Walker 26, 51 pen.

Manchester United are on the brink of claiming the Under-18 Premier League North title after winning a five-goal thriller against Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.

Kieran McKenna's team endured a tough first half, going 1-0 down in the 26th minute when Jakub Sinior won the ball on United's left side and fed Stephen Walker for a close-range finish.

Middlesbrough were worthy leaders at that stage and might have doubled their advantage had Brandon Williams not bravely blocked Isaac Fletcher's shot.

That was a crucial moment as United immediately went on the counter-attack, with Largie Ramazani's long diagonal pass finding Mason Greenwood in the right-hand corner of Boro's half. The no.9 had a lot to do from there but he did it in style, weaving past a couple of defenders before rifling in an excellent equaliser in the 42nd minute.

Greenwood put the league leaders ahead almost immediately after the restart, playing the ball out to Nishan Burkart on the right and then clinically converting the resulting low cross. However, Boro were back on level terms in the 51st minute after United goalkeeper Matej Kovar brought down Fletcher with a late, lunging tackle and Walker smashed home from the penalty spot.

With the sides now locked at 2-2, an end-to-end search for a winner ensued. Ramazani cut inside from the left and forced Boro goalkeeper Sol Brynn to tip the ball over with a fine save and Walker curled a shot over Kovar's goal at the other end.

United's decisive strike came in the 70th minute when Nishan Burkart whipped a ball in from the left, Greenwood coolly nudged it into Dylan Levitt's path and the no.10 beat Brynn with a fine first-time finish.

Moments later, Burkart attacked the same area of Middlesbrough's defence again and almost grabbed what would have been a a glorious fourth goal for United. Instead, Brynn managed to flick the fierce rising strike onto the angle of post and crossbar.

The woodwork was struck at the other end too when Layton Watts bent a free-kick against the post as the home side pressed for another equaliser, ultimately in vain.

This impressive away victory means that only local rivals Manchester City can now match United's current table-topping tally of 45 points. The Blues, who are presently in fourth spot and must beat the Reds as well as winning all of their games in hand, hammered Everton 6-1 at home on Saturday. Meanwhile, second-placed Liverpool dropped out of the running after losing 4-1 at West Bromwich Albion.

United: Kovar, Tanner, Dunne, Bernard, B. Williams, Garner, Galbraith (McGhee 86), Burkart (Mellor 82), Levitt, Ramazani (Baars 68), Greenwood. Substitutes not used: Fojtíček, Laird.

UNITED WIN THE U18 NORTHERN TITLE

Manchester United clinched the Under-18 Premier League northern title with a 2-1 victory over neighbours City at Leigh Sports Village.

Although development of players, and producing first-team options of the future, is of paramount importance, congratulations are due to Kieran McKenna and his entire squad, with its depth proving vital over the course of the campaign.

City were United's only remaining challengers for the crown and were beaten after Nishan Burkart and Ethan Galbraith, with his first goal for the Academy team, ensured victory despite a Brandon Williams own goal.

The reward is a nationwide final against Chelsea, likely to be played on the weekend of 5/6 May, with MUTV set to show the game live, after also screening the mini-derby for free on our official YouTube channel.

The Londoners have won the southern division for the fifth successive year and, considering their dominance at FA Youth Cup level recently, they represent formidable opponents. A 5-1 away win at capital rivals West Ham United on Saturday sealed top spot ahead of Arsenal.

Well done to Kieran and the boys - there is still one match in the division remaining, which is away to Liverpool next Friday.

"It was great, first and foremost, to win the game against a very good City side," McKenna told MUTV. "It was great to do it at a stadium in front of a good crowd. I'm just delighted for the boys, they're a really good bunch of boys who have worked hard all year and got their just rewards.

"It's Ethan [Galbraith]'s first goal of the season but he hits them great in training and we see it day in and day out. He's got the technique to do it so I'm just delighted for him to do it in such a big game.

"We saw the game out really well and controlled it, restricting them to shots from distance. It's a really young team, to be honest, and mainly first-years. We've got a final against Chelsea at the start of May which extends the season and gives us another showpiece game. We'll plan for that in the next couple of weeks and use Friday night [at Liverpool] as part of that."

UNDER-18S: LIVERPOOL 2 UNITED 1

Under-18 Premier League North | Scorers: Millar 6, Camacho 72 | Laird 13

Goals from Liam Millar and Rafael Camacho gave Liverpool the points against title-winning Manchester United in the Under-18 Premier League, despite the sending off of Rhys Williams.

A youthful United line-up, including an assured Teden Mengi at the back, were good value for Ethan Laird's equaliser and were on top throughout the second half but fell to a goal on the break by the 10 men.

Despite a bright opening by the Reds, which featured a shot by Largie Ramazani that was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher, the home side drew first blood after only six minutes. Adam Lewis sprinted down the left to cross with power and Millar tapped home his 15th goal in 15 games.

United responded well, with the lively Ramazani cutting across goal, only for Tom Clayton to block, and an equaliser arrived when Millen Baars and Dion McGhee were involved but Laird burst onto the ball to take charge and ran into the box to fire past Kelleher with his left foot for his first goal at this level.

Millar lashed a good attempt wide from the edge of the box and was thwarted by a wonderful save from Alex Fojticek, when the Slovakian keeper raced out of his goal decisively. Mason Greenwood had a free-kick saved but the Merseysiders had the final effort of the half, through Camacho's dipper that swerved over the top.

United controlled matters after the break but were unable to find a way past Kelleher. James Garner's drive was well held by the hosts' keeper before the red-card incident came on 53 minutes. Rhys Williams was guilty of a studs-up challenge on Garner after the skipper pounced on a sloppy free-kick deep in the Liverpool half and it was an easy decision for the referee to send the defender off.

As was the case in the corresponding fixture at The Cliff, the 10 men were galvanised and regained the lead against the run of play. Although Greenwood, blazing over a Baars pass and substitute D'Mani Mellor, with a mistimed diving header from Ramazani's cross, could have handed the league winners the lead, instead Steven Gerrard's men edged in front.

Camacho capitalised on a slip by Laird and cut inside Max Dunne before finishing his purposeful run with a low drive past Fojticek. Substitute Ethan Galbraith almost repeated his brilliant strike in the Manchester derby but his effort drifted just wide as the home side held out for a narrow victory.

United: Fojticek; Laird, Dunne (Galbraith 82), Mengi, B. Williams; Garner, Levitt, McGhee (Mellor 62); Baars, Greenwood, Ramazani (Elanga 73). Subs not used: Thompson, Bernard.
