Manchester United veteran Gary Neville's hopes of a potentially lucrative testimonial against Scottish Premier League champions Rangers would seem to have been dashed due to concerns about security.

Neville previously rejected the chance of a testimonial eight years ago to mark a decade at Old Trafford, prompting speculation that his choice to have one this year could indicate that he is about to retire.

However, after the organising committee sounded out United about the possibility of a match against Rangers, The Independent reports, it would appear that security costs will rule out a game against the Scottish side.

Rangers fans caused widespread disruption in Manchester during the 2008 UEFA Cup final, with police being attacked and shops and cars damaged.

The costs of policing such an event would mean that the testimonial would not be financially viable, accoriding to the report.
