Siapakah sosok pelatih yg tepat pengganti Mourinho jika dia dipecat?

Manchester United reportedly want to hire Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino to replace Jose Mourinho... but it may cost them up to £40million

* Old Trafford bosses may be looking to find a replacement for Jose Mourinho
* Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly their main target
* However, it could cost Manchester United up to £40million to get him

With tensions running high at Old Trafford, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho's job isn't looking particularly secure.

The main target to replace him as manager next summer is Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, but they will have to pay up to £40million for his services, according to The Sun.

The Argentine has done a good job at Tottenham, as they currently sit third in the Premier League table. Meanwhile, Manchester United are languishing in eighth.

Is Mauricio Pochettino thinking about the Manchester United job or is he happy at Spurs? Tensions are running high at Manchester United, and Jose Mourinho is feeling the pressure. Mauricio Pochettino has done an excellent job at Tottenham since arriving at the club in 2014

If United's poor form continues and they don't qualify for the Champions League, it will actually be cheaper for the club to sack Mourinho due to a clause in his contract.

In May, Pochettino signed a new five year deal lasting until 2023 worth £8.5million per year, so Manchester United will have to pay out to hire him to the job.

He's also turned down the job once before, when United instead hired Louis van Gaal, so he may take some persuading.

However, Pochettino has said that he wants to freshen up his squad in the transfer window. Spurs haven't spent very much money at all compared to close rivals since Pochettino took over. They didn't sign a single player in the summer window.

So if he's not given the funds to sign his key transfer targets again, he may start to look elsewhere.

The current Spurs manager has also been a target for Real Madrid, who have struck a much needed run of form under new manager Santiago Solari.

Right now, Pochettino's aims are to get his club into the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium, to qualify for the next stage of the Champions League, and secure a good position in the Premier League. It remains to be seen whether he'll still be with Spurs next season.

'This is a totally different job': Paul Scholes questions whether former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane could succeed at Manchester United

* Jose Mourinho is under pressure at Manchester United who are eighth in league
* Zinedine Zidane is keen to return to management after leaving Real Madrid
* Former Man United midfielder Scholes believes Zidane may not be suited to role

Zinedine Zidane may not be the right person to succeed Jose Mourinho should the Portuguese leave Manchester United, according to Paul Scholes.

Mourinho has been under increasing pressure as his Manchester United side sit eighth in the Premier League, 18 points behind league leaders and arch rivals Manchester City.

Yet Old Trafford legend Scholes has queried whether Zidane, who left Real Madrid in May, has enough experience of rebuilding teams should he replace Mourinho.

Paul Scholes believes Zinedine Zidane does not have experience of rebuilding teams. Zidane won three Champions League titles during while at the Bernabeu which ended in May

'Is Zidane the right man, though?' said Scholes on BT Sport .

'He went in to Real Madrid, who had a group of ready-made winners already.

'This is a totally different job; he would have to rebuild confidence with a squad that isn't quite performing.

'He went to Real Madrid with so many great players, it was still difficult, but this would be a whole rebuilding job.'

Zidane led Real Madrid to three Champions League titles and La Liga before departing the club in the summer.

After six months out of management, he has intimated that he is ready to return to front line coaching.

Manchester United have already made moves to lure Mauricio Pochettino from Tottenham as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be named as caretaker manager for rest of the season

* Man United are making plans to put Mauricio Pochettino in charge next summer
* United sources have been aware for some time of his desire to be at Old Trafford
* United may have to pay up to £40m to get their man as there is no escape clause
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be assisted by Sir Alex Ferguson's ex-No 2 Mike Phelan

Manchester United will name Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager to replace Jose Mourinho on Wednesday, but are already making plans to put Mauricio Pochettino in permanent charge next summer.

Old Trafford legend Solskjaer will be assisted by Sir Alex Ferguson's former No 2 Mike Phelan for the rest of the season as United reach out to their glorious past.

But it's understood that Tottenham boss Pochettino remains the club's long-term target and United sources have been aware for some time of his desire to take the Old Trafford job.

https://i.postimg.cc/7P3fvjyj/759013...5170326665.jpg
Manchester United will name Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager on Wednesday

The Argentine was Ferguson's preferred choice when Mourinho was appointed in 2016, and Sportsmail understands that United have already made the first moves to lure him from Spurs.

However, they will face fierce opposition from Tottenham chief Daniel Levy, a notoriously tough negotiator who signed Pochettino to a five-year contract in May.

There is no escape clause in the deal meaning that United may have to pay up to £40million to get their man.

They could also face opposition from Real Madrid who were ready to offer the former Espanyol boss the job at the Bernabeu last summer and could do so again.

Like United, they see 46-year-old Pochettino as the ideal coach to take their young squad forward with his brand of progressive, vibrant football.

Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward would have preferred for Mourinho to continue until the end of the season, but Sunday's pathetic 3-1 defeat at Liverpool was the final straw.

https://i.postimg.cc/qMpgpQJq/759036...5170516300.jpg
United are already making plans to put Mauricio Pochettino in permanent charge next summer

Despite speculation that Mourinho was surprised by the decision, it's understood that he knew the likelihood of his fate on Sunday night.

The 55-year-old was summoned to a meeting at Carrington on Tuesday morning and sacked by Woodward.

Mourinho cleared his desk and picked up his belongings from a suite at The Lowry hotel before returning to his family home in London.

The decision to sack Mourinho was welcomed by the majority of the United players, many of whom had fallen out with the abrasive Portuguese coach over the course of his two-and-a-half years in charge.

His coaching staff were also axed — with the exception of Spanish goalkeeping coach Emilio Alvarez who is a close confidant of David de Gea — which left Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna to take training on Tuesday.

They will remain key figures in the new set-up which represents a dramatic swing back to the Ferguson era.

Solskjaer will forever be remembered for his winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich that secured the Treble.

The 45-year-old Norwegian, who only signed a new contract as coach of Molde earlier this month, had a difficult spell at Cardiff City in 2014.

However, Woodward wants someone immersed in the United culture who knows the fabric of the club and can put a spring its step after the torpor of Mourinho's reign.

He has a good relationship with Solskjaer who has attended four United games recently and worked with Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard in his previous role as reserve team manager.

It's hoped that he will be a galvanising figure for the remainder of the season who will shift the focus away from the manager and back onto the players.

https://i.postimg.cc/7ZWLMkgJ/759068...5170848053.jpg
Solskjaer will be assisted by Sir Alex Ferguson's former No 2 Mike Phelan for rest of the season

The feeling is that a management set-up of Solskjaer, Phelan, Carrick and, possibly, academy head Nicky Butt would give United their soul back.

Ferguson was dismayed that David Moyes dispensed with the services of his backroom team when he took over in 2013, and has been looking to find a role for Phelan back at Old Trafford.

The 56-year-old, who has been working with Central Coast Mariners in Australia, will be an experienced No 2 for Solskjaer.

Meanwhile, United will press ahead with plans to appoint a director of football which had become a sticking point with Mourinho.

Manchester United chew up managers and spit them out... Mauricio Pochettino must think twice about joining an unstable empire

* Mauricio Pochettino should take caution if approached by Manchester United
* The club have taken three managers, chewed them up and spat them out
* Since Sir Alex Ferguson departed the job, United have become a problem club
* Pochettino must also factor in whether he wants to hold out for Real Madrid

On the face of it, Manchester United and Mauricio Pochettino are a heaven-made match. Then again, so were United and David Moyes; and United and Louis van Gaal; and most certainly United and Jose Mourinho.

All had excellent reasons for taking the job and track records that suggested they would thrive. Moyes was 'the chosen one', the recommendation of Sir Alex Ferguson, a hard-working, ambitious Scot in the image of his predecessor.

Van Gaal was a coaching guru with a background of elite success and an ego that could handle the spotlight.

Mourinho was almost his younger alter ego, a modern coach with an avalanche of achievement across Europe and the transfer market nous to handle the spending of the club's millions.

Manchester United chewed them up and spat all three out.

Indeed, if the six seasons since Ferguson's departure have taught us anything, it is that United, once the most stable of empires, is now a manager-eater. Three respected figures have been rendered close to untouchable by any elite club in the immediate aftermath of their dismissal by United.

https://i.postimg.cc/fWCFVzcZ/763483...5258359228.jpg
Mauricio Pochettino should think twice before swapping Tottenham for Manchester United. Should he swap Tottenham for United or Real Madrid, expectations on him would sky rocket. Madrid are impressed by Pochettino's performances in Europe, namely at the Nou Camp

Moyes has never returned to Champions League level and is currently unemployed, Van Gaal has not worked in club management since, while talk of Mourinho bouncing back immediately at Real Madrid seems wishful thinking — certainly if it is now felt Pochettino can be coaxed away from Tottenham this summer.

And while the man who would be king at Old Trafford hardly worked overtime distancing himself from the job when asked on Monday, Pochettino needs to think long and hard about his next career move.

Of course, managing United is seen as both promotion and grand opportunity. Even as they sit 13 points adrift of Tottenham, United are a bigger club. Historically, they have bought Tottenham's best players and it is presumed that, if they pay, they can lure their manager this summer, too. But that doesn't necessarily make them a better club — or a better career option for Pochettino.

If his ambition, long-term, is to manage Real Madrid, then joining United could be a deal-breaker in Spain unless he gets it right. Expectations of success at Old Trafford are very different from those at Pochettino's current club.

At Tottenham he can secure a place in the Champions League each season and it will still be considered a triumph. He can draw 1-1 at Barcelona and it will be hailed as one of the greatest results in Tottenham's history.

Yes, there is mild impatience about the absence of finite success — but Pochettino is considered one of Tottenham's greatest managers without winning as many trophies there as Juande Ramos.

If he could land so much as an FA Cup for Tottenham, he would be chaired shoulder-high along the High Road. By contrast, Van Gaal won the FA Cup at Manchester United on a Saturday and was sacked on the Monday.

United is a different animal, with very different expectations. Meaning that while a season of transition, a season in which Pochettino, say, restores United to the top four, will be seen as a reasonable start, after that demands rise dramatically.

The poisonous atmosphere around Old Trafford saw to Mourinho's demise, but even if the air had been filled with nothing more toxic than birdsong, United would still be considered to be in the market for a new manager in the summer.

Any time United are outside the top four — and certainly when they are out of it by 11 points plus significant goal difference after 17 matches — the manager will be considered vulnerable.

And Pochettino's record at Tottenham — for all his fine football and the promotion of youth — would put him on the borderline if transposed to Manchester. Might this then impact on his appeal to Real Madrid? Potentially, yes.

Madrid want the Spanish-speaking manager who has made Tottenham a force in Europe; who has come close to winning the league at a club that has not known success of that kind since 1961; who has developed some of the most promising young players in Europe, not least Harry Kane.

They want the coach who is not scared to attack at the Nou Camp and who would not entertain a position at Barcelona due to long-standing loyalty to Espanyol.

Yet, would a manager recently ousted by United because he could not win the league or the major European trophy they crave, have that same appeal? And, as good as he is, could Pochettino guarantee he would turn United around, restore them to the heights achieved under Ferguson?

In the words of new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl: 'If you want guarantees, buy a washing machine.'

Pochettino is an excellent manager, and has impressed in both of his Premier League positions, but United are proving extraordinarily problematic in the post-Ferguson years.

It would certainly help to have an ally as director of football, and the dream team plainly pairs Pochettino and Paul Mitchell, who worked with him at Southampton and then Tottenham and is now with RB Leipzig.

Equally, United's squad is far from weak, certainly beyond the back four.

Yet others in the Premier League are ahead and more cohesive — not least Liverpool and Manchester City — and nobody is going to be satisfied if United are firmly established as the third-best team in English football. Mourinho had them second last year, and he's gone already.

The other complication comes if Real Madrid notice that Pochettino may be available and decide to make a move this summer, too.

Could a club of that size, or a president with the ego of Florentino Perez, rise above rejection?

It is different if Pochettino stays at Tottenham — but if he leaves, and snubs Madrid a second time, will he be given a third opportunity? These are all factors he must take into account before deciding on his next career move.

https://i.postimg.cc/vBdjVD28/758615...ast-season.jpg
Jose Mourinho took United to second last season but was quickly dismissed on Tuesday. Mourinho left United 19 points off league leaders Liverpool and 11 points off the top four

It was only last month that Mourinho was bemoaning the changing relationship between United and Tottenham.

Recalling the days when United shopped in London for talents such as Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov, he asked: 'Is Manchester United bigger than Tottenham? I think everybody would say yes.

'Can you buy Tottenham's best players? No, they don't sell. They are so powerful that they can say no. Can we bring Harry Kane? Dele Alli? Christian Eriksen? Son Heung-min? No. So who is more powerful now?' He has a point. Premier League money has made it easier for some of the smaller big clubs to resist United's overtures in a way they could not previously.

It was not too long ago that Daniel Levy was considered a chairman who would always do a deal for the right price, but even with the financial demands of the new stadium, he has clung to Tottenham's stellar talent.

He may do the same with Pochettino — certainly if the manager is not agitating for a move. Yet if the pressure becomes intolerable, and the compensation agreeable, it may still be wise for United's No 1 guy to look before he leaps.

This is not the club it once was. It is a big club, a wonderful club — but a problem club.

It is making fools of men who thought they knew how to win, casting shadows on their career paths and traducing reputations as it thrashes around for answers to its malaise.

Manchester United 'consider move for Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri as club step up search for next manager'

* Manchester United are weighing up their options for their next permanent boss
* Jose Mourinho was sacked earlier this month following a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool
* Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been brought in until the end of the season

Manchester United will consider Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri as the club begin to co-ordinate search for their next permanent manager.

Jose Mourinho was sacked earlier this month following a comprehensive 3-1 defeat to rivals Liverpool and club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought in until the end of the season on an interim basis.

According to ESPN, while Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino remains the club's No 1 target, Juve manager Allegri will be in the discussion among the club's top brass as they create a shortlist of men they want to succeed Mourinho.

Solskjaer has won his first two games in charge - a 5-1 away win at Cardiff and a 3-1 home win over Huddersfield Town - but the club are likely to continue looking at external candidates.

The ex-United striker, who remains under contract at Molde, intimated in his opening press conference that he would like the job on a permanent basis but it remains to be seen if a decision on a successor will be made ahead of the end of the season.

Allegri is one of the finest managers in world football and should United entice him to Manchester, it would be a real coup.

Manchester United 'will consider Juventus' Massimiliano Allegri' as they eye next manager. Allegri is one of the finest managers in world football and boasts an impressive CV at Juventus. He is an animated manager but brings trophies and results as he has shown while in Turin

The 51-year-old is under contract with the Serie A champions until 2020 but has previously made it clear a switch to English football is something he finds appealing.

He was one of the key names in the frame for the vacant Arsenal job when Arsene Wenger departed, but the club eventually opted for free agent Unai Emery following his exit from PSG.

Allegri has led Juventus to four consecutive Serie A titles and reached the Champions League final in 2015 and 2017 - his stature and experience would provide United with an authoritative figure to turn around the club's fortunes both domestically and in Europe.

United want to restructure behind the scenes and bring in a sporting director to ease the workload on CEO Ed Woodward - something that would not phase Allegri given he has a similar set-up already in place at Juventus.

'Mauricio Pochettino would be the right guy': Wayne Rooney backs Spurs boss to get Man United job... but only if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer misses out

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has led Manchester United on an incredible run of form
* Wayne Rooney believes the Norwegian should be given a shot at the role
* But he says Mauricio Pochettino is the man to pick if Solskjaer misses out

Wayne Rooney has backed Mauricio Pochettino to take the Manchester United job — if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not get it.

Solskjaer has led United on an incredible run of form after taking over the job on a temporary basis following Jose Mourinho's sacking. They have not lost in 10 games and have only drawn one.

The Norwegian is now the favourite for the job after taking 22 points in eight Premier League games.

Pochettino has been regularly discussed as the prime candidate for the role, although his Tottenham side did lose to United at Wembley last month.

Rooney, who currently plays for DC United in MLS, feels the Argentine is the best option if his former team-mate Solskjaer is not given a shot.

'Ole Gunnar's a fantastic person,' Rooney said to CNN.

https://i.postimg.cc/g0smm8Vq/946423...9456029033.jpg
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the interim manager at Manchester United until the end of the season. Wayne Rooney heavily praised his former team-mate when he was asked about the job. But he said that if United decide to go elsewhere, they should appoint Mauricio Pochettino

'I think, the club will have a decision to make at the end of the season, and it'd be nice to see if Ole's going to continue with this form, and get a shot at the job on a permanent basis.

'But if not, if the club go to choose from somewhere else, then I think in my opinion Pochettino would be the right guy.'

Solskjaer, who played 364 times for the Old Trafford side, takes United to Fulham on Saturday.

They then take on Paris Saint-Germain in a Champions League clash next week.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer in 'pole position' to land Manchester United manager's job with Ed Woodward fearful he won't be able to attract Mauricio Pochettino

* Ole Gunner Solskjaer is said to be in pole position to get the job full-time
* Solskjaer hasn't lost a game since he replaced Jose Mourinho at the helm

Ole Gunner Solskjaer is reportedly in pole position to land the Manchester United manager's job on a full-time basis.

Solskjaer is currently occupying an interim role as boss after replacing Jose Mourinho in December.

The Daily Mirror report that Solskjaer, who hasn't lost a game in charge since he took over, has become the No 1 contender for the job.

An £8million fee has already been agreed between United and Norwegian club Molde should he be offered the full-time job.

It is also reported that United chief executive Ed Woodward is concerned about not being able to lure Mauricio Pochettino from Tottenham.

It comes after former United striker Wayne Rooney said he would back Solskjaer to get the job, though he could see why Woodward would want Pochettino.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'will be named as full-time Manchester United boss' as the club's board makes a decision after a run of 10 wins in 11 games

* Reports say that United will name Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as full time manager
* Since taking charge in December, United have won 10 of their 11 matches
* Victory over Fulham at the weekend saw United enter the top four

Manchester United's board have reportedly made the decision to name Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club's full-time manager.

According to The Sun, the decision has been made at board level but may not announce it until the end of the season.

Co-chairman Avram Glazer spoke with Solskjaer after United's 3-0 win over Fulham, and is said to be convinced alongside fellow co-chairman Joel Glazer.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino had been United's main target for the job, with Ed Woodward attempting to lure him away from Spurs for next season.

And it appears United will still maintain that the search for a new manager is ongoing, despite new reports to the contrary.

Since taking over in December from the departing Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer has won 10 of his 11 games in charge, drawing the other one against Burnley.

Off the back of their impressive form, he has lifted them to fourth place in the Premier League, where they currently occupy one of the Champions League spots and are one point ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea.

https://i.postimg.cc/wjB54YrH/964346...9840845958.jpg
Since taking charge, he has got United's stars up and running again, and lifted them to fourth. Solskjaer received a visit from co-chairman Glazer after United's win over Fulham. It is well known that current Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was United's main target

They face a tough couple of weeks though, when they host French champions Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford in the Champions League, followed by a trip to Chelsea in the FA Cup and a home game against Liverpool.

Liverpool will be looking to restore their lead at the top of the Premier League, but they'll be facing one of the league's in form teams in United.

Phil Jones has said that United were a 'laughing stock' under Mourinho, however people must take them seriously now under Solskjaer. The defender recently signed a new contract for the club.

Meanwhile, Nemanja Matic believes they can mount a title challenge next season after moving into the top four.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'set to be named permanent boss by Manchester United during international break'

* Solskjaer has enjoyed a remarkable run since being named as interim manager
* The 46-year-old Norwegian has won 14 of his 18 games in charge at Man United

Manchester United are ready to confirm Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new permanent boss during the upcoming international break, according to reports.

The 46-year-old Norwegian has enjoyed a remarkable run since being named as interim manager on December 19 following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, winning 14 games, drawing two and losing just twice.

Solskjaer also oversaw a remarkable comeback against Paris Saint-Germain to book a quarter final place in the Champions League.

Initially, the plan was to leave the decision on Mourinho's full-time successor until the end of the season but the Red Devils are now ready to make decision before their next Premier League match, reports the Daily Mirror.

United legend Gary Neville also believes former team mate Solskjaer will be handed the job this month.

He said: 'I'll be surprised if Solskjaer is not awarded the job during the international break in the next couple of weeks.

'I can't believe it what's happened. I thought when he first came in it was just to reconnect the club with the fans, the players, keep everyone happy.'

Solskjaer revealed his contract with Molde was terminated so that he could sign up with Manchester United until June.

It's understood that Phelan will return to Australia during next week's international break in his role as sporting director for Central Coast Mariners.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer's contract at Molde was torn up when he returned to Old Trafford on a short-team deal until the end of the season, and he is still waiting for United to extend it.

The club would also have to pay Molde £500,000 in compensation as part of the loan agreement.

Solskjaer has repeatedly answered questions about his future by saying that he will continue to focus on his job until United make a decision, and that genuinely seems to be the case despite a clamour for his appointment from players and fans.

He has been involved in long-term planning over the club's summer tour - which begins in Perth in Australia in July and is also likely to take in Singapore and China - as well discussions about possible transfers.

But any potential new signings will want to know who is in charge next season, as will United players in talks over new contracts like David de Gea and Marcus Rashford.

Solskjaer is aiming to guide United into the semi-finals of the FA Cup when they face Wolves at Molineux on Saturday. Ander Herrera is hopeful of returning after a hamstring injury, although Romelu Lukaku has been ruled out.

United will also discover their opponents in the quarter-finals - and potentially semi-finals - of the Champions League on Friday when they go into the pot with Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.

UEFA announced on Thursday that United will have to reverse their fixture and play away if they are drawn at home on the same night or consecutive nights as City in either round.

Police and safety officials do not want to stage two big games in Manchester in the same week, and United must switch their fixture under competition rules because they finished below City in the Premier League last season.

'He is a really happy coach that gave confidence back to the players': Paul Pogba says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves Man United job full-time

* Paul Pogba says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves the Manchester United job
* Solskjaer has overseen a remarkable turnaround at the club since taking over
* The French midfielder admitted he lost confidence under Jose Mourinho

Paul Pogba says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'deserves' the Manchester United job full-time after transforming the club during his three months as caretaker boss.

Pogba admits the United players lost confidence and stopped enjoying their football under Jose Mourinho, who stripped the Frenchman of the vice-captaincy in September as their relationship turned sour.

Solskjaer has engineered a remarkable turnaround, guiding United into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and giving his old club a strong chance of finishing in the top four.

No-one has benefited as much as Pogba who was dropped to the bench at the end of Mourinho's reign but has scored nine goals in 17 games under his Norwegian successor.

Solskjaer has yet to be told by the Old Trafford hierarchy if he will be handed a long-term contract beyond the end of this season, but Pogba insists he has the players' backing.

'Of course we want him to stay,' said United's record £89million signing. 'The results have been great. I have a great relationship with him, he has a great relationship with the players.

'When a player is happy, he wants to keep being happy. Solskjaer deserves it. He knows the club, he knows everything about the club. He is a really happy coach that gave confidence back to the players.

'This gave us the freedom to play and enjoy football again because maybe we lost that with the results that we had before.'

Pogba was reluctant to discuss the situation surrounding Mourinho's demise at United but he admitted that confidence was a problem under the Portuguese coach.

He added: 'Maybe we lost confidence, maybe things went wrong. A lot of talking outside that we weren't used to.

'I don't like to talk about the past. I like to talk about the future because that's what matters. We are better now and the results have been brilliant. We are back in the top four.'

United have always maintained that a decision would be made before the end of the season, but an announcement could come earlier to end any speculation.

United midfielder Nemanja Matic echoed the feelings among the players when he called for Solskjaer and his No 2 Mike Phelan to be appointed, working with assistant coaches Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

‘I think he’s a great manager,’ said Matic. ‘I will be happy if he stays and I hope he will.

‘But you have to say also that with Mike, Michael and Kieran, they work very well together. It’s not only Ole.’

Solskjaer has been spending time with his family in Norway during the international break while Phelan travelled to Australia in his role as sporting director for Central Coast Mariners.

‘It’s just a case of seeing how things develop over the next couple of months,’ said Phelan.

‘The season is coming to an end in Australia, so once decisions are made back over in England then I think we’ll open those discussions again with the Mariners.’

'He came here with a big smile on his face and I think that was important for the players': Victor Lindelof eager to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer given Man United job on permanent basis

* The Norwegian has lifted United into the top four after taking over in December
* Lindelof has become a mainstay under Solskjaer, featuring in all 19 matches

Victor Lindelof admits he will 'be pleased' to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appointed Manchester United's permanent manager.

United have remained tight-lipped about Solskjaer's long-term position but it is understood he could be announced as the permanent boss as early as this week.

Lindelof has developed under Solskjaer and admits he is keen to see the former Cardiff City boss rewarded for the work he has done since succeeding Jose Mourinho in December.

Manchester United are said to be close to appointing Solskjaer as their permanent manager. Lindelof reveals how Solskjaer's 'big smile' was important in lifting the players on his arrival

Speaking to Sky Sports about Solskjaer's future, Lindelof said: 'If he gets the job, I will be pleased.

'It's not my job to decide in the end, but, of course, I'm very happy with the things that he has done since he's arrived. I have nothing bad to say about him.

'He's a legend of the club, so he knows everything about being here as a player, so when he speaks to you, you always listen.

'He knows what he's talking about because he has been through it all. That's also a very good thing to have.

'He's been amazing since he arrived and he came here with a big smile on his face and I think that was important for all of the players.

'He spoke to me and told me to do the things that I'm good at, to show my abilities and to express myself on the pitch. That was very nice to hear.'

Lindelof has been an ever-present alongside Chris Smalling under the interim boss and has featured in all 19 matches that Solskjaer has been in charge for.

The 46-year-old Norwegian has won 14 of his 19 games as caretaker manager since replacing Mourinho.

After their FA Cup exit, attention after the international break turns to a double-header against Watford and Wolves, the team they lost out to in the FA Cup.

United are currently fifth in the table and are chasing down Arsenal and Tottenham in a bid for a top four finish, therefore securing Champions League football for next season.

'He has galvanised the club': Ex-Manchester United striker Andy Cole impressed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's impact at Old Trafford... and backs caretaker boss to get job permanently

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned the club around since replacing Jose Mourinho
* He has led the club to 10 wins from 13 Premier League games, losing just once
* The United boss has led them to fifth in the table, only two points off the top four

Andy Cole has praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for galvanising Manchester United and backed him to be appointed permanent manager.

Solskjaer has turned the club around since replacing Jose Mourinho on a caretaker basis in December until the end of this season.

He has led the club to 10 wins from 13 Premier League games, losing just once and guiding them to fifth place in the table, only two points adrift of the final Champions League qualifying spot.

He has also steered United into the Champions League quarter-finals, after a stunning 3-1 win at Paris St Germain in the second leg set up a last-eight meeting with Barcelona.

'I have been very impressed,' former United striker Cole said at the European launch of this year's International Champions Cup in Cardiff.

'He has gone in, he has galvanised the club, they've got results at the right time.

'Fair enough they have lost the last couple, but I just think he is trying to get Manchester United playing the way they used to play - attractive football, scoring goals and being entertaining.

'His staff have had a lot to do it with as well. Bringing Mike Phelan back was essential.

'I would give him (Solskjaer) the job.

Andy Cole has praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for galvanising Manchester United this campaign. Solskjaer has turned the club around since replacing Jose Mourinho on a caretaker basis

'When he came to the club I could see why they were doing it, but we've got to be all brutally honest - I don't think anyone could have sat here and said he would do as well as he has.

'Because even if you brought in a top-tier manager, you would say if a top-tier manager started like that it would be unbelievable.

'So when Ole does it, it opens your mind. But fair play to him, I would love him to get the job and I would love him to continue to do very well.

'We all know this is possibly the most important appointment since Sir Alex left. We have had three managers in that time.

'When people are talking about Manchester United finishing in the top four of the Premier League and it's time to celebrate, I am scratching my head.

'That's not something to celebrate. It is Manchester United. For me you celebrate winning the league, getting to the European Cup final or winning the FA Cup, or whatever.

'It's a massive appointment and if Ole does get the job, no doubt he will know just how tough it is to try and propel the club forward and be competing with Manchester City and Liverpool.'

United lost their way in the latter spell of Mourinho's reign, being widely criticised for what was viewed as a negative brand of football.

'You have got to be concerned,' Cole said.

'Playing for United you play in a certain way, and when you see them not playing that way you have got to start scratching your head.'

United will play AC Milan at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on August 3 as part of the 12-team Champions Cup competition that runs from July 16 to August 10.

Their Premier League rivals Arsenal and Champions Cup holders Tottenham will also be part of the league-style tournament, along with Juventus, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Benfica and Chivas.

Their Cardiff trip apart, United meet Inter Milan in Singapore and Spurs in Shanghai, while Arsenal tackle Bayern Munich, Roma and Real Madrid in the United States, and Spurs also face Juventus in Singapore and Inter Milan at their new stadium in north London.
