Default Re: All Time United Top Score

Wayne Rooney delighted after drawing level with Denis Law as Manchester United's second-highest scorer with 237 goals

* Manchester United beat CSKA Moscow 1-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night
* Wayne Rooney scored only goal of the game to end his 403-minute drought
* He joins Denis Law on 237 goals and is now the joint second highest scorer
* Captain said 'Law is a legend at this club, so I'm delighted to equal his record'

Wayne Rooney admits he is delighted to have equaled Denis Law's tally of 237 goals for Manchester United, and become the club's joint-second highest scorer in the process.

The England and United captain ended his 403-minute drought to earn his side a crucial three points against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

In doing so he drew level with Law, and Rooney says he is over the moon to share second spot with a legend before aiming for Sir Bobby Charlton's overall record of 249.

Wayne Rooney thanks the fans after the game after Manchester United's 1-0 victory against CSKA Moscow

Rooney moved level with Denis Law's tally of 237 goals for the club by scoring at Old Trafford on Tuesday

Quote:
Manchester United record goalscorers

1) Sir Bobby Charlton (1956-73) - 249 goals

2=) Dennis Law (1962-73) - 237 goals

2=) Wayne Rooney (2004-) - 237 goals

4) Jack Rowley (1937-55) - 211 goals

5=) Dennis Viollet (1952-62) - 179 goals

5=) George Best (1963-74) - 179 goals
'Denis Law is a legend at this club, so I'm delighted to equal his record,' Rooney told BT Sport after scoring the only goal of the game at Old Trafford.

'We are top of the group now so it's a big three points. We've got another big one coming up against PSV. Another win in that game and we will qualify.'

Rooney had not scored since netting against former club Everton at Goodison Park on October 17, but found the breakthrough on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old headed home past Igor Akinfeev after Jesse Lingard's fine first-time volleyed cross, leaving Louis van Gaal's side in pole position to qualify for the last-16.

Speaking about the 1-0 victory against the Russian side, Rooney added: 'It is difficult when teams come and defend with all their players, tough to break down.

'We had to keep grinding and digging, but we got the chance and the goal.

'A lot of teams nowadays defend deep with all their players and it is tough to break that down.

'We tried to get an early goal and once that doesn't happen it becomes difficult, but we got the goal and the points and that is all that matters.'
