Manchester United are facing a £5,000 fine for arriving late to Sunday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham which caused kick-off to be delayed by 30 minutes.

United’s coach encountered heavy traffic en route to White Hart Lane from their team hotel ahead of the 3-0 defeat by Spurs.

In a bid to dodge the congestion, United’s coach driver took an alternative route only to cause further delay due to a low tunnel the vehicle couldn’t fit under.

Manchester United face a £5,000 fine after arriving late to Sunday's Premier League clash with Tottenham

The United team bus was delayed and arrived at 3.45 after encountering heavy traffic en route to north London

Premier League rules state a £5,000 fine for any delay of 15 minutes or less which usually applies for teams returning to the field of play after half-time.

However, the Old Trafford club could face a bigger fine after delaying the game by half an hour.

It will be considered by the Premier League board and Manchester United will have the opportunity to present their case.

The match eventually kicked off at 4.30pm with Manchester United's top-four hopes taking a severe dent as goals from Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela sealed victory for title-chasing Spurs who still trail leaders Leicester by seven points.

Quote:
PREMIER LEAGUE RULES ON DELAYS

L.29: Any club which without good reason causes to be delayed either the kick-off of a League Match from the time fixed or the re-start after the interval.

L.29.1: Shall on the first such occasion pay a fixed penalty for £5,000 if the delay does not exceed 15 minutes.

L.29.2: Shall on a second or subsequent occasion within two years of the first such occasion or if in any case the delay exceeds 15 minutes be dealt with under the provisions of Section W of these Rules (disciplinary).
