Manchester United 0-3 Tottenham- PLAYER RATINGS: Lucas Moura thrills on the counter as Phil Jones endures evening to forget at Old Trafford

* Manchester United slumped to a 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham on Monday
* Lucas Moura was the star of the show for Spurs at Old Trafford, scoring a brace
* Jose Mourinho's switch to a back three backfired painfully for hosts United

Manchester United's start to the season took another turn for the worse as they slumped to a 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Monday evening.

Harry Kane's superb looping header gave Spurs the lead shortly after the break, before Lucas Moura compounded United's misery soon after.

The Brazilian then put further gloss on the score late on to make it two defeats on the bounce for Jose Mourinho's side. Here, Sportsmail assesses the performances of both sets of players from Monday's clash.

MANCHESTER UNITED (3-4-2-1)

DAVID DE GEA 6 – Little chance with any of the goals but produced a great save from Dele Alli to keep United in it.

ANDER HERRERA 5.5 – Big gamble to play him on the right side of a back-three and he failed to cut out second goal from Lucas Moura.

CHRIS SMALLING 5.5 – One of six changes. Denied Alli twice but was caught for pace on the third goal.

PHIL JONES 5 – Lucky not to concede a penalty for shoving Lucas Moura and lost Harry Kane when he scored from a corner.

ANTONIO VALENCIA 6 – Gave United more energy on the right after being criticised for his fitness in the summer.

PAUL POGBA 6.5 – Better attitude than Brighton and went close twice, but still needs to step up more in big games.

NEMANJA MATIC 5.5 – Caught in possession early on and looked off the pace after abdominal surgery.

LUKE SHAW 7 – Looks more confident with every game after making his third start in a row. Got forward well down the left.

JESSE LINGARD 6 – Typically energetic display from him but lacked the penetration to worry Spurs.

FRED 7 – Looked lively from the start and could have scored inside 20 seconds. His best performance since joining United.

ROMELU LUKAKU 5 – Missed an open goal in the first half and headed another clear chance wide. Poor from him.

SUBS: Lindelof 5, A Sanchez 6.5, Fellaini 6

MANAGER

JOSE MOURINHO 5 – Change of personnel and tactics didn't work, and he will come under even more pressure after back-to-back defeats.
