Default Re: Season Review Manchester United 2015/16

Manchester United: The ridiculous statistics

* Manchester United average 11.3 shots per Premier League game; that’s marginally fewer than Sunderland (11.6). Only Stoke, Norwich, Newcastle, West Brom and Aston Villa average fewer shots.

By way of comparison, here are the top five shooters this season:

Tottenham 17.3 shots per game
Liverpool 16.5
Manchester City 16.1
Arsenal 15
West Ham 14.5

* That figure of 11.3 shots per game is down from 13.5 last season and 13.8 the previous season under David Moyes. In Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge – 2012/13 – that figure was 14.7. So in three seasons since Ferguson’s exit, United’s shot-taking has dropped by 23%.

2 – Both instances of Man Utd hitting three (or fewer) shots in a PL game between 2003 and 2016 have come under Louis van Gaal. Restricted.

* Manchester United average 3.8 shots on target per Premier League game; that’s equal to Bournemouth and Newcastle.

By way of comparison, here are the top five shooters on target this season:

Tottenham 6.6 shots on target per game
Manchester City 5.5
Arsenal 5.5
Liverpool 5.3
West Ham 4.8

* That figure of 3.8 shots on target per game is down from 4.7 last season and 4.8 the previous season under David Moyes. In Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge – 2012/13 – that figure was 5.6. So in three seasons since Ferguson’s exit, United’s on-target shot-taking has dropped by 32%.

1 – Manchester United have managed 1 first-half shot on target in total in their last 3 Premier League away games (0 v West Ham). Tepid.

* United’s two goals at Upton Park took them to 46 for the season. Barring a 12-goal flood in their final game, this season will see their lowest goals total since 1989/90, when they finished 13th in the old Division One.

* Wayne Rooney has taken 70 shots this season but 43 of those shots have been taken from outside the box. He has scored seven goals.

The only other Premier League player who has taken exactly 70 shots this season is Marko Arnautovic. Just 29 of his 70 shots have been taken from outside the box. He has scored 11 goals.

* Wayne Rooney has scored a goal every 331 minutes of Premier League football this season. For comparison, Anthony Martial has scored a goal every 232 PL minutes and Marcus Rashford every 196 minutes.

  • * Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata have five PL assists each this season. That puts them on equal terms to Bournemouth left-back Charlie Daniels, Georginio Wijnaldum, a lumbering Yaya Toure, Graziano Pelle, Jordan Veretout, Philippe Coutinho and a now-jailed Adam Johnson who has played only 19 games this season.

  • * Mata is Manchester United’s highest chance creator with 53 this season. There are 21 Premier League players who have created more, including Robbie Brady. The much-maligned Jesus Navas is one behind Mata on 52.

  • * Jesse Lingard has created 13 chances in 1545 minutes while playing as an attacking midfielder. Other players who have created 13 Premier League chances this season are Bryan Oviedo (998 minutes), Gabriel Agbonlahor (1037 minutes) and Modou Barrow (750 minutes).

  • Anthony Martial has equaled the record of Rooney & Brian Kidd for most goals scored (17), who started their Man United career as a teenager.
  • Man United average 3.8 shots on target per PL game this season. It is down from 4.7 last season, 4.8 under Moyes & 5.6 under SAF in 2012/13.
  • Manchester United have averaged 2.19 points from PL games played on a Tuesday (P43 W28 D10 L5), the best rate of any side in the PL.

On WHU match, Daley Blind and Chris Smalling are now tied on 52 starts each this season, equaling Vidic's record from 2008-09 season. Partners.
