Default Re: [UCL] CSKA Moscow vs Manchester United

Jose Mourinho turns on the charm offensive as he urges Manchester United to be 'humble' ahead of CSKA Moscow Champions League clash

* Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho avoids controversy over his dismissal
* United continue their Champions League campaign away to CSKA Moscow
* On the eve of the match, Jose Mourinho confirmed that Michael Carrick is out
* Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba did not travel to Russia due to injury problems
* Mourinho is hoping for his side to continue their fine form - seven wins in eight
* But he has urged his players to be 'humble' to cope with tough moments

Jose Mourinho was stitched up before the trip had barely begun. A couple of Liverpool fans managed to squeeze into a photograph with him, having slapped a 'Spirit of Shankly' sticker on his shoulder.

The notion that 'Jose is a Kopite' was soon in circulation as the image was shared.

But when the Manchester United manager spoke on Tuesday his tone revealed that he is still making all the mental calculations.

Mourinho skipped the chance to rage against the system - not least his dismissal at Southampton on Saturday - and was positively gushing about the referee he really believes should have sent off the Saints player who has put Marouane Fellaini out of Wednesday night's match against CSKA Moscow.

Considering his own dismissal and Shane Long's escape from one, it was surprising to hear Mourinho describing himself as 'happy' he would face no FA disciplinary action.

He said Saturday's referee Craig Pawson is 'one of the big talents' who had 'a great game, so calm and in control'.

Man United have won seven of their last eight games ahead of Wednesday at CSKA Moscow. Mourinho urged his players to be 'humble' in order to get through tough periods in games. Mourinho also confirmed that Michael Carrick will not play in the Champions League clash

There is motive for everything with Mourinho, of course. This sudden diplomacy belongs to the efforts he always makes, when things are going well, to remove the distraction of controversy. It was similar when he returned to Chelsea in 2013 and, for a time, stopped picking fights.

These phases do not tend to last but it was a sign of where United are that he radiated charm, happy to joke with Russian journalists.

If there is a problem for United, who have dropped only two Premier League points and beat Basle 3-0 in their first group match, it is the injuries to midfielders Michael Carrick, Paul Pogba and Fellaini. Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones are also out but it is nothing like the catalogue of defensive injuries United have taken to the continent in the past 10 years.

United come up against the great hope of Russian football on Wednesday - Aleksandr Golovin, who turned 21 only this summer and is seen as his country's best talent since Andrey Arshavin.

United should not be troubled, though. The presence of both United and Liverpool in Moscow this week means 500 police and stewards being deployed at both games, but do not expect Mourinho to get a second mugging.

'We try to play well in the moment the opponent has superiority,' he said. 'We have to be humble.'
