United drew the largest crowd for an English football league match - at Maine Road. A massive 83,260 turned out to watch the Reds draw 1-1 with Arsenal.

United hammer local rivals Bolton Wanderers 7-2 with Bobby Charlton hitting a trademark hat-trick. Dennis Viollet (2), Duncan Edwards and Albert Scanlon got the others.

United signed current goalkeeping coach Tony Coton for £500,000. He left for Sunderland the following year in a deal worth £350,000.

Andrei Kanchelskis is born. The Ukraine-born winger signed for United in 1991 from Shakhtyor Donetsk and played 151 times for the Reds before leaving for Everton in 1995.
