Default Re: Man United U-21 Matches 2015/16

Under-21s: Leicester 1 United 1

Manchester United opened the defence of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League title with a 1-1 draw at Leicester City's King Power Stadium.

Warren Joyce's side repeated last season's result at the same venue as Guillermo Varela cancelled out an Ashley Fletcher own goal with an individual effort during the first half.

The Foxes were quick out of the blocks and dominated the opening exchanges with Joel Castro Pereira's goal under real pressure. Pereira kept out a shot by Jak McCourt and ex-Red Tom Lawrence had a couple of attempts, one from a free-kick, before the opening goal on 22 minutes.

McCourt sent over a set-piece from the left, following a late tackle by Donald Love on first-teamer Leonardo Ulloa, and the ball skimmed off Fletcher's head and into the net. United struggled to muster any real threat until a moment of real inspiration by Varela.

Pouncing on a defensive lapse by Ben Chilwell, the Uruguayan drove into the box with intent and concluded a solo run with a well-placed drive past Jonny Maddison with his left foot. The Reds were galvanised by the strike and a neat move saw Josh Harrop steer a James Weir pass straight at Maddison.

The second half was an evenly balanced and intense affair with both teams able to keep possession but delivering little in way of sting in attack. Harrop launched a free-kick over the bar but Love needed to block a Jack Barmby shot after another former Red was picked out by Yohan Benalouane's inventive backheel. Benalouane embarked on a running battle with Weir throughout the second half and risked receiving more than the yellow card he was shown for his aggressive approach.

Joe Dodoo ran straight through the heart of the defence, only to be halted by Pereira, while Maddison held a curling effort by Matty Willock that may have been drifting wide in any case. Fletcher twice flashed off target from passes by Weir and substitute Sadiq El Fitouri with the visitors' final
