Sir Bobby Charlton: You'll have to put up with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for a while yet
By Jonathan Liew

As Sir Alex Ferguson reaches the milestone of 25 years as manager of Manchester United, he received another glowing tribute from Sir Bobby Charlton last night, who said he believed the Scot would never retire from the job.

Charlton, who has been involved with Manchester United for almost six decades after signing with the club in 1953, and who has served as a director for the last 27 years, said that Ferguson’s appetite for the job was so great that he would be able to carry on in charge indefinitely.

As one of the few men in history able to outrival Ferguson for longevity at Old Trafford, Charlton also said that it was unlikely any other manager would be able to take charge of the same club for a quarter of a century as Ferguson has done.

The end of Ferguson’s reign has been much portended over the years, but is yet to come to fruition. Ferguson originally intended to retire almost a decade ago, at the end of the 2001-02 season, but in February of that season he reversed his decision and decided to sign a new three-year contract. He said later that announcing his retirement date in advance had unsettled the team, who only managed to finish third in the Premier League that season.

“I don’t think he will make another decision again about when he goes,” said Charlton said, who was promoting the Laureus Sport for Good global summit, which is currently taking place in London.

“He’s done it once, it didn’t work, and I don’t think he’ll do it again. He’ll go on and on and on. Absolutely. You’ll have to put up with him for a while yet.”
