World Cup hero Sir Bobby to visit college

AN England World Cup hero is visiting Barrow to see a college’s ground-breaking research to help save lives across the globe.

England and Manchester United legend, Sir Bobby Charlton, will be at Furness College on Wednesday in his role as founder of the Find a Better Way charity, which focuses on developing and deploying new technology to detect and clear landmines.

Furness College, under the banner of Lancaster University, is one of the founding consortia providing the technical expertise to work on new approaches in landmine detection.

Sir Bobby has been invited by Ken Seddon, the head of technical engineering, at the Channelside college, to view the research which has been carried out by Mr Seddon and the BEng engineering degree students over the last two years. Furness College’s students have their BEng degrees validated by Lancaster University, and the two education institutions work alongside the University of Manchester, Rapiscan Systems and Mines Advisory Group to develop ways to prevent people from being killed and maimed by landmines around the world.

Mr Seddon undertook acoustic research into landmines and his students have further progressed detection techniques.

Sir Bobby will present an award to former Furness College student Neil Brace. The Sellafield commissioning engineer, graduate achieved a first class BEng (Hons) electrical and electronic engineering degree in the summer. Mr Brace has been awarded two years’ free Institution of Engineering Technology membership for his final year project into using magnetic pulses to scan ground and detect land mines.

Sir Bobby was moved by seeing the impact of landmines on the lives of children in Bosnia and Cambodia.

He launched his new charity this week.

Mr Seddon, who has spoken to Sir Bobby on a number of occasions about the college’s work, said: “It is a very big coup for the college.

“It just shows how the college has been progressing in electrical and mechanical engineering over the years.

Sir Bobby said: “So many wonderful charities exist to oversee the extraction of these gruesome devices, but it was clear a better way was needed to increase the speed, efficacy and safety of this process, and my vision for Find A Better Way was born.”
