U18s: Liverpool 4 United 0

Manchester United’s Under-18s were made to rue a disappointing first-half performance as the Reds suffered a 4-0 defeat away to rivals Liverpool.

The hosts raced into an early 2-0 lead with strikes from Harry Wilson and Jerome Sinclair inside the first 16 minutes, before Will Marsh scored the pick of the goals to put his side further ahead. Ryan Kent rounded off the scoring for the hosts in the second half.

Stretford-born Demetri Mitchell again led United's line after scoring a hat-trick against the Magpies last week and the visitors started brightly with defender Joe Riley looking to get forward. However, Liverpool*winger Sergi Canos provided an early scare when he forced a good save from recalled United goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Canos turned provider on 14 minutes when, after patient build-up by Liverpool, he produced a pin-point cross for Wilson to stab the home side into a deserved lead.

United looked to respond immediately and came within inches of equalising, as Scott McTominay’s effort struck the post, before his rebound was scrambled to safety.

That was a missed chance the visitors would regret, as Liverpool raced away to double their lead at the other end. Canos’ deflected cross fell for an unmarked Sinclair, whose cushioned header found the corner.

The goal of the game came on 25 minutes, as more impressive play from Wilson saw the midfielder square the ball to Marsh, and the former-Crewe man drove the ball home from the edge of the area.

The half-time whistle prompted a double change from the United bench as Tyler Reid and Marcus Rashford were introduced, and the pair immediately looked to change the pattern of play after the break.

Paul McGuinness' players looked more composed in possession thereafter, and had a good chance to pull a goal back through Zak Dearnley, whose low shot was well saved.

Liverpool were a constant threat on the counter attack as United went in search of a consolation, and they scored a fourth goal on 77 minutes, as Canos went through and unselfishly squared the ball for Kent to tap into an empty net.

Despite encouraging play late on,*United will be disappointed by the defeat, with the next opportunity to make amends coming on 13 September when Stoke visit the Aon Training Complex.*

United: Henderson; Riley, Tuanzebe, Williams, Warren; Redmond, Borthwick-Jackson, Rathbone, McTominay, Dearnley; Mitchell. Subs not used: Dorrington, Johnson.
