Ron Davies passes away
Manchester United is saddened to learn former player Ron Davies has died. He was 70 years old.
The news was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon by Southampton FC, where he spent the largest part of his career, prior to joining the Reds for a brief spell in the mid 1970's.
Davies made 281 appearances and scored 153 goals for the Saints, with one of the highlights being a game against the famous United team of Best, Law and Charlton on 16 August 1969. He headed in all four of Southampton's goals that afternoon at Old Trafford as the Reds were routed 4-1, a performance which apparently led Sir Matt Busby to describe Davies as "the best number nine in Europe."
It was Tommy Docherty who eventually signed Davies for the Reds, in November 1974, but he only deployed the Welsh international as a substitute on 10 occasions, eight of them in the club's promotion-winning campaign from the Second Division (now the Championship).
Davies later played for Millwall, adding the London club to a CV also featuring Chester City, Luton Town, Norwich City and Portsmouth, as well as Wales for whom he won 29 caps and scored 9 goals between 1964 and 1974.
During his short stay at Old Trafford, Davies was a team-mate of players including Brian Greenhoff, who passed away last week at the age of 60.
