Default Re: [EPL] Southampton 2 v 3 Manchester United

Southampton 2-3 Manchester United PLAYER RATINGS: David de Gea stars with series of crucial saves as Red Devils edge Saints to soar second in Premier League

* Manchester United edged Southampton 3-2 at St Mary's on Sunday
* Teenage striker Anthony Martial impressed with two well taken goals
* Goalkeeper David De Gea made a string of crucial saves for United
* Southampton forward Graziano Pelle caught the eye with his own brace
* Maya Yoshida and Jose Fonte struggled in the Saints defence

Southampton (4-2-3-1)

Maartan Stekelenburg 6

Little he could do about both Martial strikes who twice rolled the ball past him or the third when he was pulled to the left of goal to try to keep out Depay's shot which hit the post, allowing Mata an open net to finish.

Maya Yoshida 4.5

Unfortunate that his perfectly-time tackle on Mata rolled straight to Martial to then score, but the second was entirely his fault as a shocking back-pass went straight to the Manchester United forward to add a second.

Jose Fonte 5.5

Terrible defending to allow Schneiderlin's header to run into the box which allowed Mata in on goal and led to Manchester United's opener. Unfortunate his near-post header in the second-half did not earn an equaliser. Booked for a foul on Martial.

Virgil van Dijk 5.5

Embarrassed by Martial as he was completely fooled by the Manchester United forward's turn before he fired in the equaliser. Booked for hauling Martial down as he broke away.

Matt Targett 6

Appeared to pick up an injury right at the end of the first-half and was substituted at the break. Kept Mata quiet when he started out on the right.

Oriol Romeu 6

Managed to avoid picking up a booking, which is quite unlike Romeu since he signed from Chelsea. Substituted early in the second-half with Southampton needing to take a more attacking approach.

Victor Wanyama 6

Was controlling the centre of midfield for Southampton for the first half-hour, until United scored their surprise equaliser, and almost scored at the death with a rasper from the edge of the box.

James Ward-Prowse 6

His deliveries into the box from right and centre caused United difficulties at the back. Could perhaps have got more into the game.

Dusan Tadic 6

Tricky on the left flank, getting into spaces and getting crosses into the box. However, he went quiet in the second-half when Southampton needed him to get them back into the match.

Sadio Mane 6

His volley, latching on to Ward-Prowse's cross, set up the first goal when it was saved by De Gea, allowing Pelle to place at the second attempt.

Graziano Pelle 7.5

Great follow-up to score the opener on the rebound, then hit the post moments later after a lovely 180 degree turn on the edge of the box. His second goal from a header to make it 3-2 gave Southampton hope at the end.

Substitutes

Cuco Martina 6 (on for Targett 46)

It looked like the change was enforced due to an injury to Targett late in the first-half.

Steve Davis 6 (on for Romeu 56)

On the pitch to provide more of an attacking edge, but failed to turn the tide agains this side.

Shane Long 6 (on for Ward-Prowse 76)

Put in a usual bustling, nippy display as the game headed towards its climax, but was on too late to make a difference.

Subs not used: K Davis, Cédric, Rodriguez, Juanmi

Manager: Ronald Koeman 5

Seemed to have got this so right as his side dominated the first 30 minutes, but they fell apart when United levelled against the run of play.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

David de Gea 8

Incredible save at point-blank range to deny Mane the first, but was powerless to stop Pelle putting in the rebound.

Then made another, even better, to keep out Fonte's header, which would've levelled, and a third to keep out Wanyama's effort in stoppage time was up there too. Earned his side all three points.

United goalkeeper David de Gea made a series of crucial saves late on to help his side to a narrow victory

Matteo Darmian 5.5

Given one of the tougher tests of the bright start to his Manchester United career by the skilful Tadic and hooked at half-time.

Chris Smalling 6.5

The main calming influence on a particularly erratic first-half United defence.

Daley Blind 5

Identified as a weak link by Koeman before the match and proved as much. Too easily bossed by Pelle, too slow to deal with Mane.

Marcos Rojo 6

First start since Copa America final, and his lack of first-team football this season did not show. Taken off for the remaining 20 minutes, lacking match fitness.

Michael Carrick 6

Did not, perhaps, have as big an influence on the game as he would've wished, given the chance to start in United's central midfield which Louis Van Gaal likes to rotate.

Morgan Schneiderlin 6

The Southampton fans gave no reaction whatsoever to his return to St Mary's for the first time and he barely put a foot wrong. His long header into the box started the move for their first goal.

Juan Mata 7.5

Ineffectual starting out wide right, but as soon as he was moved into a central position made a difference. Helped make United's first and got the third with a rebound.

Wayne Rooney 6

Looked off-the-pace in the first-half and lacking match sharpness, after time out injured. His passing was better int he second 45.

Memphis Depay 7.5

Outshone out on the left by fellow new signing Martial, but a constant outlet for his side and his turn before hitting the post, for Mata to score the third, was world class.

Anthony Martial 8.5

Demonstrated calm and composure to turn van Dijk before slotting in the leveller for a goal out of nowhere. The 19-year-old is showing no signs of struggling with his huge price-tag.

Martial scores United's first goal to draw them level at 1-1 with Southampton on Sunday

Substitutes

Antonio Valencia 6 (on for Darmian 46)

Better performance than the man he replaced, added a dimension over-lapping on the wing to help United finish the match off.

Bastian Schweinsteiger 6 (on for Carrick 60)

Provided a screen for the final 30 minutes with United starting to command the midfield.

Paddy McNair 6 (on for Rojo 69)

Possibly better going forward when he came on than he was in defence, a surging run down the flank to win a corner a particular highlight.

Subs not used: Romero, Young, Herrera, Fellaini

Manager: Louis van Gaal 7.5

Changed things around tactically when they were not working at the start and the full might of his expensively-assembled side did the job.
