Hughton linked with West Ham job
ESPNsoccernet - December 12, 2010

Sacked Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton could make a swift return to the Premier League at struggling West Ham United, according to the Sunday Express.

The Hammers are rooted to the foot of the table and following a 3-1 home defeat to Manchester City on Saturday the pressure has increased on boss Avram Grant.

The financial implications of relegation would be disastrous for West Ham, who are heavily in debt, and with almost half of the season gone co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan could be forced to make a change.

Hughton, who was surprisingly sacked by Newcastle despite guiding them to mid-table after winning promotion to the Premier League, is reportedly top of the list to replace Grant.

The former Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager has a reputation as a players' man and is seen by the West Ham owners as someone who can galvanise a struggling squad.

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton dedicated his man-of the match award after a 3-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday to the departed manager.

Former Ajax boss Martin Jol, the man he assisted at Tottenham, will be his major rival for the post - if the Hammers lose patience with Grant.
