The FA will write to Manchester City after blue flares were set alight and thrown by home fans during last weekend’s defeat by Manchester United at the Etihad.

It’s unlikely that City will be punished over the incident, but the FA are keen to work with the club and Greater Manchester Police to identify the culprits who face a ban and criminal prosecution.

FA will write to Man City after flares were set alight and thrown by fans during Man United loss. City have escaped action over allegations that a coin was aimed at Jose Mourinho during game

Meanwhile, City have escaped action over allegations that a coin was aimed at Jose Mourinho towards the end of United’s 3-2 win.

Referee Martin Atkinson did not report it, meaning the FA won’t pursue the matter. United were reluctant to take it further because Mourinho was not hit, and even handed the coin to a ball boy afterwards.

City have already received an automatic £25,000 fine after having six players booked in the game that saw United fight back from two goals down to prevent their rivals from clinching the Premier League title.
