Van Gaal ready and waiting for United talks

Louis van Gaal is ready and waiting in Portugal to discuss the prospect of becoming David Moyes’ successor. The Holland coach remains the favourite to take charge at Old Trafford after Moyes was sacked this week.

United ’s owners, the Glazers, are due to fly in to the UK to resolve the managerial vacancy.

They are aware that Van Gaal is currently on holiday in the Portuguese resort of Vale do Lobo and will be available for talks.

Live: Manchester United - the hunt for new manager

The 62-year-old is understood to be keen on the prospect of trying to revive the fortunes of the fallen Premier League champions when he becomes a free agent at the end of this summer’s World Cup.

Roy Keane has emerged as a potential assistant should he be appointed, though it remains to be seen how that would sit with Sir Alex Ferguson following the Irishman’s acrimonious departure from United in 2005.

There have been barbed comments between the two since then, with Ferguson critical of his former captain in his recent autobiography.

But Van Gaal would be given freedom to assemble his own backroom – even if there is a preference within Old Trafford to maintain continuity by providing a role for Ryan Giggs.

The 40-year-old has been appointed interim and is very much seen as manager-in-waiting.

But it is accepted it is too soon for him to take the reins on a permanent basis this summer with United instead drawing up a stellar shortlist to return them to their former glories.

As revealed in MEN Sport today executive vice chairman Ed Woodward will not rule out moves for even the biggest names in the sport.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have already ruled themselves out, but United will not be put off making an approach.

Carlo Ancelotti is also highly admired, as is Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone.

But Van Gaal has emerged as the clear favourite and is available to discuss the role before the World Cup.
