Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United vs Watford

Preview: Manchester United v Watford

Scene-setter:
Manchester United are suddenly high on confidence following a run of three consecutive wins over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, FC Midtjylland in the Europa League and Arsenal on Sunday. That last result has fuelled belief within the squad that a top-four finish is still possible and the players are determined to maintain that winning feeling against Watford.

Form guide: United have won the last 10 competitive matches against Watford and have not lost to the Hornets since a slender 1-0 defeat at Vicarage Road in September 1986. Louis van Gaal's men triumphed at that same stadium earlier this season, on 11 November, when Troy Deeney’s own goal in added time clinched a dramatic 2-1 success. Of course, when discussing current form, we must mention young striker Marcus Rashford and the two braces he scored against Midtjylland and Arsenal. That, of course, gives the Academy graduate an impressive strike rate of 2.00 goals per game.

Latest team news: Marcos Rojo was substituted during the second half of Sunday’s match with Arsenal after taking a kick from Danny Welbeck, although the manager did not believe it was serious when talking to MUTV afterwards. Chris Smalling missed that game through injury and it remains unclear when he will return. Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Will Keane are all expected to miss out. Watford will only be without Jose Manuel Jurado and Joel Ekstrand.

View from the dressing room: “Today was just a question of fighting, playing for the fans and playing for the badge because the results aren’t what we expected over the last few months even if we had a lot of injuries. Now in four days, it may be the turning point of the season. We need to continue like that, not to get carried away. We need to make sure that we recover for Wednesday and continue with the same mentality.” - Morgan Schneiderlin after beating Arsenal.

Opposition manager: Kiko Sanchez Flores was appointed in the summer, shortly after Watford won promotion to the Barclays Premier League, yet the Spaniard has earned praise for his work this season with his side on course to retain top-flight status by playing attack-minded football in the 4-4-2 formation. Ander Herrera recently spoke to MUTV about the Hornets boss: “He was a great player and now he’s doing very well in Watford. It’s not so easy when you’re promoted and they are already safe. They are fighting even for a European place so he is doing very well. He also did very well in Atletico Madrid and Getafe so I have to congratulate him. Hopefully, we can beat them though.”

Danger man: Odion Ighalo is Watford’s top scorer with 15 goals, but his strike partner Troy Deeney is arguably their most influential player – both on and off the pitch. The Hornets captain features in Wednesday’s official match programme and he’s pleased with how the season is going. “We're catching you, actually! It's been a very productive season. We had a lot of doubters on the outside at the start of it, but on the inside we’ve always been confident about what we can achieve.”

Sub-plots: Wednesday’s fixture is United’s fourth outing in just nine days and van Gaal may be tempted to rotate his team if he has the personnel to do it. Morgan Schneiderlin, Guillermo Varela, Daley Blind and Memphis Depay have all played in every single minute of those three fixtures.

Rivals watch: Leicester City face West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night as Chelsea travel to Norwich City. On Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur visit West Ham, Arsenal host Swansea City and Liverpool take on Manchester City.

Referee: Mike Jones will be the man in charge. It will be his third United match this season after the home games against Sunderland (3-0) and Southampton (0-1) and away clash with Crystal Palace (0-0).
