Quote:
U18s: United 6 Wolves 1

Manchester United's Under-18s scored three times in each half to register a convincing 6-1 defeat of Wolves at the Aon Training Complex.

The only League One club in the Academy division provided a sterner test than the scoreline suggests and enjoyed a good period just before half-time but were unable to contain a side featuring Josh Harrop's invention in midfield and James Wilson's blistering pace and intelligence in attack.

Some sloppy defending allowed two-goal Ashley Fletcher to win possession and tee up Harrop for an early opener and only the woodwork denied Wilson moments later after the skipper rounded goalkeeper Scott Dutton and a goal seemed certain. Wilson and Harrop were always at the forefront of things, firing wide and shaving the bar respectively, although Dan Murray offered a shot wide in retaliation for the visitors.

Wilson scooped a lob over the bar following some persistent play by Nicholas Ioannou but the second goal arrived from an unlikely source as full-back Callum Evans played a one-two with Harrop and smashed past Dutton at his near post. Dutton fared better with a deflected Wilson effort, saving superbly, but was beaten again when a neat run by Harrop allowed Fletcher to get on the scoresheet.

Sean Goss' shot caused Dutton problems but Wolves made a fight of things when Kieran O'Hara could only push a Peter Smith drive onto a post and into the net. With their tails up, Cieron Keane then forced an important touch from O'Hara to divert the ball for a corner.

Any hopes of a comeback were soon extinguished after the interval when Harrop's centre was met by Fletcher's aggressive close-range header. Jesse Devers worked O'Hara before both sides almost put through their own net, Dutton punching a Goss corner towards the goal and Ioannou sending a Tom Hill cross against a post.

Harrop continued to impress by making a goalline clearance and was too high with a free-kick attempt after Fletcher was fouled. Two goals inside a minute extended the lead with substitute Ruairi Croskery supplying a precise finish after Evans' crunching tackle allowed Goss to advance forward. Seconds later, Wilson claimed the goal his performance deserved with a powerful solo run that preceded a clever shot past the exposed Dutton.

Wilson hit the woodwork for a second time with a thunderous drive and, after Croskery went close to his second, the United captain utilised his searing pace again to tee up Devonte Redmond but the No.11 was unable to hit the target from an inviting position.
