Manchester United have reimbursed all 700 supporters who were planning to attend the club's Europa League clash with LASK after it was announced that the game will be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus.

United will pay £350 to each fan to cover their travel and hotels as well as refunding their match ticket for Thursday night's game.

The Red Devils' good-will gesture will set the club back £245,000 with the deadly virus continuing to wreak havoc across the world.

Manchester United have paid £350 to all supporters who were travelling to LASK on Thursday

Fans were notified by text message which thanked them for their continued support on away days.

The text message read: 'We appreciate the lengths to which supporters go to follow the team wherever we are playing in Europe. We understand that, for many fans, the cost of travel and accommodation for the LASK game will have been non-refundable.

'Given this unique occasion, we have chosen to pay a fixed sum of £350 to all supporters who were due to attend tonight's game having purchased tickets through the club.

'This is in addition to the match ticket refund which has now been processed and should be credited to your account within 3 working day.

'The £350 will also be credited to your account within 5 working days and appear as a separate payment. Thanks.'

Manchester City's clash with Arsenal on Wednesday evening was the first Premier League to be called off due to the coronavirus, with many more top-flight games expected to follow suit.

United sent a text message to each fan to tell them that they had been reimbursed

The government response to the coronavirus outbreak is expected to shift to the 'delay' phase on Thursday - reportedly meaning that a crisis plan concerning football could shortly be unveiled.

All matches are expected to be played behind closed doors under new plans to combat the spread of the virus.

LaLiga became the next top division to suspend games after the Real Madrid squad were put into quarantine after one of the club's basketball players contracted the disease.
