Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero set for MLS move after hopes of joining Everton were crushed... which forced an angry outburst from his wife on social media

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is lining up a move to Major League Soccer after his hopes of joining Everton on deadline day were dashed.

Romero, who has been at home in Argentina while his future is resolved, wants to make a fresh start in America where the transfer window is open until October 29.

The 33-year-old thought he was moving to Goodison Park on loan as competition for Jordan Pickford, but the deal fell through when United demanded a fee and Everton signed Robin Olsen from Roma instead.

Romero, who has dropped to third choice at Old Trafford after Dean Henderson's return as No 2 to David de Gea, is said to be unhappy at United's stance and his wife Eliana Guercio took to social media on Monday to vent her feelings.

'Sergio Romero worked hard for his club. Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him,' she wrote. 'He helped the team reach 4 finals/semi-finals and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all. It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. Respect for once!'

Meanwhile, United are exploring the possibility of shortening Edinson Cavani's quarantine period so their new signing can make his debut at Newcastle a week on Saturday.

Cavani is self-isolating for 14 days after arriving in the UK from France on Sunday, but United want to make him available sooner.

As it stands, the 33-year-old Uruguay striker cannot train at Carrington or play against Newcastle.

He is likely to have only one training session with his new team-mates before United fly to France on October 19 for their Champions League group opener against Paris Saint-Germain the following night.

Cavani, who has not played a competitive game since appearing in PSG's win over Borussia Dortmund in March, is said to be desperate to face his former club.

The situation again raises the question why United waited until late on deadline day to sign a free agent who has been available since June.
