Under-18s: Blackburn 1 United 4
Oliver Rathbone helped himself to a hat-trick as United’s Under-18s stormed to an impressive victory at sun-drenched Brockhall on Saturday.
The Reds took a while to get into their stride for most of the first half but eventually brushed aside a lively Rovers’ team, coached by former United defender Brian Carey.
With the first 45 minutes almost over, the Reds grabbed the lead when Rathbone unleashed a 25-yarder which found the net despite Rovers’ keeper Andrew Fisher getting his hands to the ball.
The goal certainly seemed to give United a boost and the Reds opened the second half with a more positive approach. Their plans, however received a jolt in the 63rd minute when Rovers’ substitute Lewis Mansell hooked home the equaliser after some sloppy play from the Reds.
Two minutes later and United were back in front and it was Rathbone celebrating again after tapping home from close-range. The Reds had claimed the upper ground and four minutes later they increased their lead when Ruairi Croskery beat the Rovers’ defence to Joe Riley’s corner to head United’s third goal.
Victory looked assured from this point, but icing was applied to the cake three minutes later when Rathbone latched onto Callum Gribbin’s through ball to complete his hat-trick against the club his father, Mick, served as a full-back in the 1980s.
Blackburn defender Matthew Platt did well trying to rally his side in the closing stages with a couple of terrific strikes that brought the best out of United keeper Dean Henderson.
UNITED: Henderson; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Dearnley (Whelan 77), Riley, Redmond, Rathbone; Gribbin, Croskery. Subs: Byrne, Makela, Thompson L., Gomes.
