U18s: United 1 Spurs 0

Manchester United’s Under-18 side ended a run of five games without a win a hard-fought victory over Tottenham on Saturday.

Paul McGuinness made seven changes to the team that had lost at Reading a week earlier, and his decision was rewarded with a battling performance against a Spurs side that leads the U18 southern group by six points.

The Londoners had the better of the early stages at the Aon Training Complex, but United gradually asserted themselves and Demitri Mitchell forced the Spurs keeper to save with his foot in injury time for the Reds’ best chance of the first half.

United finally underlined their improvement on 58 minutes when Mitchell and Joe Riley combined on the right flank to allow Ashley Fletcher to tap in from close range for his 12th goal of the season.

Mitchell had a chance cleared off the line, and Joel Pereira made a brilliant finger-tip save with five minutes left to deny Harrison to help claim the win and only the young Reds’ second clean sheet of the season.

United: Pereira, Riley, McConnell, Ioannou, Barber, Goss, Willock, Mitchell (Rashford 87), Croskery (Evans 64) Thompson (Borthwick Jackson 87), Fletcher.

Unused subs: Henderson, Kehinde.
