Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United 4-0 West Ham United

Manchester United 4-0 West Ham - PLAYER RATINGS: Romelu Lukaku dazzles on debut as Javier Hernandez endures tough Old Trafford return

* Romelu Lukaku scored two debut goals and came close to getting a hat-trick
* Paul Pogba capped a good display with a goal, while Anthony Martial also netted
* Nemanja Matic was solid and helped Manchester United dominate in midfield
* New £16million striker Javier Hernandez had a tough time on his West Ham bow

Romelu Lukaku marked his Premier League debut for Manchester United with two goals to help fire his new team to a 4-0 win over West Ham on Sunday.

The £75million summer signing from Everton found the net either side of half time - first with his left foot and then via a header, before Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba completed the rout.

Sportsmail's CHRIS WHEELER was at Old Trafford to assess the players on both sides, as well as the referee in the middle...

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

DAVID DE GEA 6.5 – The Spaniard was alert to deny Andre Ayew on the stroke of half-time after having almost nothing to do up to that point. Remained a virtual spectator in the second half as United bossed the game.

ANTONIO VALENCIA 6.5 – The United skipper played right-back as Jose Mourinho reverted to a back-four and hardly put a foot wrong, other than a late challenge on Marko Arnautovic that earned him a booking.

PHIL JONES 7 – Preferred to Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof which shows what Mourinho thinks of Jones if he can just stay fit. Highlight of an assured display was a crunching tackle to stop Arnautovic in his tracks in the first half.

ERIC BAILLY 7 – The combative Ivorian was brought straight back after missing the UEFA Super Cup through suspension and showed why. Dominant in defence and a threat at set-pieces. Booked for a foul on Javier Hernandez.

DALEY BLIND 6 – Solid on the left and provided a steady supply of set-pieces. Went close to a goal towards the end but his volley into the ground bounced just over the bar.

NEMANJA MATIC 8 – He has brought a whole new dimension to United since his £40m move from Chelsea. Anchors the team superbly and gets forward effectively – including one run past four West Ham players in the first half here. Outstanding.

Midfielder Nemanja Matic, another summer signing, also enjoyed a good Red Devils debut

PAUL POGBA 8 – United hope that Matic’s arrival will release Pogba and there are certainly signs of that working. The powerful Frenchman bullied West Ham at time and his excellent build-up play deserved more from his teammates. Capped a commanding performance with a well-taken goal late on.

MARCUS RASHFORD 7.5 – Slipped an exquisite pass into Lukaku’s path for the first goal as their partnership continues to blossom. Should have scored himself as well but steered a shot wide when clean through in the second half before hitting the foot of the post with an excellent effort.

JUAN MATA 6 – Got behind the West Ham defence twice early but couldn’t provide the finish. Faded a little after that and was the first United player to be replaced 15 minutes from time.

HENRIKH MKHITARYAN 7 – Another enterprising performance from the Armenian who provided the cross, a free kick clipped nicely to the edge of the six-yard box, for Lukaku to head the second goal and the pass for Martial to score the third.

ROMELU LUKAKU 8.5 – Hard to fault a two-goal Premier League debut. Lukaku was signed for £75m to kill off the likes of West Ham and he delivered on his first appearance at Old Trafford. That’s 11 in 12 games against the Hammers. His powerful running caused them all sorts of problems and he provided two clinical finishes.

Romelu Lukaku was in fine form at Old Trafford, scoring twice for new side Manchester United. Lukaku scored his first goal with his left foot, before doubling his tally with a towering header

Subs: Martial (for Rashford 80), Smalling, Lingard (for Mkhitaryan 87), Romero, Herrera, Fellaini (for Mata 75, 6), Darmian.

Scorers: Lukaku 33, 52, Martial 87, Pogba 90

Booked: Bailly, Valencia

Referee: Martin Atkinson 7

Star man: Romelu Lukaku

Attendance: 74,928
