Default Re: [FAC] Semifinal : Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur

UNITED'S FIVE FA CUP WINS OVER SPURS

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will meet in the Emirates FA Cup for the 16th time on Saturday (kick-off 17:15 BST).

United have won five, drawn five and lost five of the previous 15 clashes against the north London club in English football's biggest domestic cup competition.

The Reds have a promising recent record against Spurs in the FA Cup, having won the last three meetings, with the most recent being a 2-1 victory in the fourth round at Old Trafford in 2009.

Saturday's crucial last-four tie will be the first time that United and Tottenham meet at Wembley in the competition, with the majority of the previous meetings coming at either side’s home grounds, although there was one tie played at a neutral venue - the 1962 semi-final, which was staged at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground.

Here, we take a closer look at the five previous times the Reds have got the better of Spurs in the FA Cup...

3 February 1926, United 2-0 Tottenham, fourth-round replay

United sealed a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win at Old Trafford, after a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane in the initial game. Joe Spence, the Reds' eighth top goalscorer of all-time, netted in both games, including the first in this particular tie. Spence, who spent 14 years at the club, scored 168 goals in 510 appearances in total.

14 March 1979, United 2-0 Tottenham, quarter-final replay

United and Spurs have played out five replays during their clashes in the FA Cup - and it was Dave Sexton’s side that were victorious on this occasion. Sammy McIlroy, who played more games against Tottenham Hotspur (19) than any other side for United, opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Joe Jordan, who was United’s top goalscorer in the 1979/80 season and later went on to become an assistant manager at Spurs under Harry Redknapp, added the second on the hour mark.

5 January 1997, United 2-0 Tottenham, third round

Two of the most successful sides in FA Cup history met again in the competition for the first time in 18 years as Sir Alex Ferguson's men recorded another two-goal win. Paul Scholes broke the deadlock in the 51st minute before a trademark David Beckham free-kick beat Spurs goalkeeper Ian Walker to seal United’s place in round four.

27 January 2008, United 3-1 Tottenham, fourth round

Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo saw the Reds come from behind to win at Old Trafford and reach the fifth round of the competition. United fell behind to a Robbie Keane goal in the 24th minute before a Carlos Tevez strike levelled proceedings just before half-time. Ronaldo scored from the spot, after Spurs defender Michael Dawson was sent off for a handball, before firing in a low shot which squirmed underneath Tottenham keeper Radek Cerny to seal the victory.

24 January 2009, United 2-1 Tottenham, fourth round

United proved to be the comeback kings once again against Spurs at the same stage of the competition, producing another turnaround to knock the Lilywhites out of the FA Cup at Old Trafford for the second successive season. Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko headed Harry Redknapp’s side in front after just five minutes before a trademark Paul Scholes drive levelled proceedings. But Dimitar Berbatov had the final say against his former club in the 36th minute, rifling home after latching on to a defence-splitting pass from another ex-Spurs man, Michael Carrick.

UNITED'S RECORD AGAINST TOTTENHAM IN THE FA CUP:
Played: 15
Won: 5
Drawn: 5
Lost: 5
Goals scored: 22
Goals conceded: 23
