Default Re: [FA Cup - replay] West Ham United vs Manchester United

Manchester United defender Phil Jones believes FA Cup quarter-final clash with West Ham will make-or-break season

* Manchester United set for FA Cup quarter-final replay with West Ham
* Phil Jones believes the clash will define season for the Red Devils
* Louis van Gaal's future at Old Trafford continues to look bleak

Phil Jones reckons Wednesday's clash with West Ham will define Manchester United's season, urging his side to all 'pull in the same direction'.

Louis van Gaal faces a potentially flat end to the campaign if they are dumped out of the FA Cup at Upton Park.

United still have four points to recover over rivals Manchester City if they are to finish in the top four after being left stunned during Sunday's galling 3-0 defeat at Tottenham.

A failure to qualify for the Champions League, coupled with a lack of silverware, would surely spell the end for Van Gaal at Old Trafford.

'West Ham's another massive game,' Jones said. 'It’s probably a defining moment in our season so we need to make sure we win that game and that we’re at Wembley.

Phil Jones has spoken about the importance of Manchester United's FA Cup clash with West Ham

'It’s been a difficult season. For the 60 minutes against Spurs I thought we looked comfortable but then they score three quick goals and we’re out of the game. We have got to win.'

Van Gaal was heavily criticised for his substitutions at White Hart Lane but hopes to have captain Wayne Rooney available for a place on the bench.

Jones is on the road back from a persistent ankle injury, still hopeful of a European Championship spot, and revealed the extent to which United are smarting after a season lurching from one crisis to another.

'Trust me, there is no-one more disappointed than the dressing room,' he added. 'We know we have to excite the fans, play attractive football and win games. We all want the same thing.

'We all need to pull in the right direction, starting on Wednesday.

'Fighting wise, I don’t think we can look at anyone in the dressing room and say "you didn’t give 100 per cent". Everyone gives their absolute maximum for this club and the fans and the manager.

'At times it has not worked but we are positive. We have to be. I keep saying it but Wednesday is such a huge game now. Every game is huge but this is even bigger.

'The lads will be gutted with the result [at Tottenham] and the way we conceded so quickly. Again, Wednesday is the defining moment of our season.'
