Default Re: Man United U-21 Matches 2015/16

Manchester United U21 3-2 Liverpool U21: Marouane Fellaini nets in win for Red Devils

* Marouane Fellaini scored for Manchester United's youth side
* Andreas Pereira and Sergio Romero were also in action
* Liverpool side included Jose Enrique and Jordan Rossiter

Marouane Fellaini scored for Manchester United's Under 21 side as they beat Liverpool 3-2 in a dramatic Barclays Under 21 Premier League clash on Monday night.

The Belgian midfielder has struggled for game time in Louis van Gaal's first team this season, so would have been delighted to get on the scoresheet before playing a key role as Nick Powell doubled United's lead with 11 minutes to go.

Liverpool then pulled two goals back with strikes from Jerome Sinclair and Madger Gomes to seemingly claim a point, the latter coming after a poor error from goalkeeper Sergio Romero, but Sean Goss struck in the closing minutes to secure the victory for United.

Fellaini and Co dominated the first half for United, with the likes of Andreas Pereira, Romero and Powell also handed starts, while Jordan Rossiter played an hour for Liverpool as he continued his return from injury.

Undoubtedly the biggest name in the Liverpool side, though, was Jose Enrique, the Spanish left-back targeting a first-team return under Jurgen Klopp after being frozen out towards the end of Brendan Rodgers' tenure.

But while trying to make a good impression, Enrique instead made a poor error which nearly led to an opener for United after 26 minutes, when he passed it straight into the path of Powell. The United forward then slipped the ball into Pereira, whose effort was brilliantly tipped over by Liverpool goalkeeper Ryan Fulton.

Six minutes later, however, United were in front through Fellaini. The midfielder hasn't started a first-team game since United's Capital One Cup defeat by Middlesbrough last month, but looked sharp as he netted from Josh Harrop's cross.

MATCH FACTS

Manchester United: Romero, Varela, Tuanzebe, Borthwick-Jackson, Riley, Weir, Goss, Pereira, Fellaini, Harrop (Redmond 76'), Powell (Rashford 81')

Goals: Fellaini 32' Powell 79' Goss 89'

Liverpool: Fulton, Maguire, Smith (Hart 46'), Cleary, Enrique, Rossiter (Gomes 61'), Wilson, Chirivella (Virtue 87'), Sinclair, Brannagan, O'Hanlon

Goals: Sinclair 83' Gomes 85'
United threatened again early after the break, as Guillermo Varela whipped a ball from the right-hand side onto the head of Powell, who should have done better than nod wide from inside the area.

United continued to dominate but Liverpool had the ball in the back of the net midway through the second half when substitute Gomes, on for Rossiter, fired low past Romero.

But it was chalked off, perhaps wrongly, for offside by the officials.

To add to Liverpool's woes several minutes later, United doubled their lead and it was Fellaini at the heart of it again.

He played a one-two on the edge of the area before his fierce drive was saved by Fulton, but the Liverpool keeper could only divert it into the path of Powell for the simplest of tap-ins as United moved into a seemingly unassailable lead with just over 10 minutes on the clock.

But Liverpool didn't give up and pulled one back four minutes later through Sinclair as he netted from close range, then drew level soon afterwards when Romero's poor attempt at a punch landed straight at the feet of Gomes, who buried it into the bottom corner.

The game was seemingly heading for a draw, but United eventually claimed the victory in the 89th minute as Goss got onto the end of a pass from Fellaini on the edge of the area before curling one brilliantly into the top corner.
