Default Re: [pre Season] 1st Match vs Club America || ManUtd Tour at USA - ICC

The opposition Club America play their football in Liga MX, Mexico’s premier football division. Formed in 1916, the team from Mexico City have established themselves as the country’s no.1 side and now boast more titles than any other club on those shores. Las Águilas (the Eagles), as they are nicknamed, play their home games at the colossal Azteca Stadium, a ground that can house up to 95,000 passionate America fans.

Previous meetings United have faced Club America on only one previous occasion, that being a 3-1 win during the Reds' tour of the States in 2003. On that occasion, a Diego Forlan brace, allied to a solitary strike from Ruud van Nistelrooy, proved enough to see off the Mexican side.

Head coach Gustavo Matosas took charge of the Eagles following the surprising departure of Antonio Mohamed in December 2014. Mohamed had only just led the club to their 16th league crown when it was announced that he would be moving on, leaving Matosas to continue the club’s legacy of exciting, successful football.

Star man As a skilful attacking-midfielder or winger, Rubens Sambueza poses one of Club America’s biggest threats. The Argentinian has become a key part of the side since signing from Estudiantes Tecos in 2012 and will be keen to test his ability against the Reds.

This season The Mexican championship is split into two, with America winning the first part - the Apertura - and finishing second in the overall table. At the end of April they celebrated beating the Montreal Impact to win the CONCACAF Champions League which booked them a place in the Club World Cup in Japan.

Did you know? America's home, the Aztec Stadium, was where Diego Maradona scored his famous two goals against England - the controversial 'Hand of God' effort and his incredible solo run - during the 1986 World Cup.
