Default Re: Manchester United under Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho will return Manchester United to glory days, says Old Trafford legend Gary Pallister

* They take on Leicester City at Wembley in traditional curtain-raiser
* Old Trafford legend Gary Pallister believes Mourinho will restore glory
* United have won just one trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013

Manchester United legend Gary Pallister believes Jose Mourinho will succeed where David Moyes and Louis van Gaal failed and restore the club to the pinnacle of the English and European game.

Mourinho took over at Old Trafford over the summer and United fans are optimistic that the 'Special One' can bring back the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson's time in charge.

Pallister, the defender who made 437 appearances for United between 1989 and 1998, agrees, saying Mourinho will 'drag the club into a new era.'

Jose Mourinho will restore the glory days to Manchester United, according to Gary Pallister

He told the Sunday Mirror: 'He won't be overawed by the size of United. When you have lived in the goldfish bowl that is Real Madrid, then constant pressure and big expectations are a way of life.

'He seems like a man who thrives on the biggest challenges - and, let's be honest, getting Manchester United back where they belong is the biggest challenge in the Premier League.

'It's been three years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and they haven't qualified for the Champions League in two of the three seasons. That isn't good enough.

'United have to be playing in the biggest tournament, they have to be challenging for the title and winning trophies, like the Barcelonas, the Real Madrids and the Bayern Munichs.'

Pallister was certainly used to success during his time at United, winning three Premiership titles, three FA Cups, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

But since Ferguson retired in 2013, they have won just one trophy - the FA Cup under Van Gaal last season.

And after a fifth place finish in the Premier League, it means Mourinho's maiden season will involve playing in the UEFA Europa League.

After a hectic pre-season, the Mourinho era at Old Trafford officially gets started when their face Leicester City in the FA Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
