Default Re: Ferguson: 21 Best Signings

Daripada buat trit baru mending angkat trit lama yak, kali ini kita bahas pemain2 utama SAF 30 tahun yang lalu saat dia baru melatih United

Quote:
WHO WAS IN SIR ALEX'S FIRST UNITED TEAM?

Alex Ferguson, pre-knighthood, oversaw his maiden match as Manchester United manager 30 years ago on 8 November 1986. The result is reasonably well known - an inauspicious start, losing 2-0 away to Oxford United just two days after his appointment. But who was in that first line-up and how long did they remain at the club?

CHRIS TURNER
The shot-stopper kept clean sheets in the next two matches under Sir Alex but his appearances dwindled after the new boss gave youngster Gary Walsh his senior debut in mid-December. When Jim Leighton arrived in 1988, Turner ceased competing for United's no.1 shirt and signed for Sheffield Wednesday.

MIKE DUXBURY
The long-serving defender was one of only two players in the Oxford match who was still at United when Sir Alex won his first trophy, the FA Cup in May 1990. However, Duxbury was largely an onlooker by then, hampered by knee injuries, and he was freed for a move to Blackburn Rovers that summer.

ARTHUR ALBISTON
The Scot set the example that Denis Irwin would eventually follow, as a dependable left-back who was practically immovable from United's team over numerous seasons. But after his tally of starts plunged to just five in his 14th campaign at the club, 1987/88, he was allowed to join West Bromwich Albion.

KEVIN MORAN
The solid Irish centre-back was a popular figure under Ron Atkinson and he remained a regular until Sir Alex made one of his landmark early signings, acquiring future captain Steve Bruce from Norwich City in December 1987. Moran stayed until his summer departure to Sporting Gijon in Spain.

PAUL McGRATH
Regarded as one of the finest defenders of his generation, McGrath might have stayed for much longer under Sir Alex's disciplinarian management had it not been for knee injuries and off-the-pitch difficulties. Instead, he was sold in 1989 to Aston Villa where he earned the PFA Player of the Year award in 1993.

GRAEME HOGG
Like Turner, Moran and Albiston, the Aberdeen-born defender found his United career was over at the end of Sir Alex's first full season in charge, 1987/88. With Bruce and McGrath now the preferred partnership at the heart of the Reds' back four, Hogg moved on to Portsmouth where he made 100 appearances.

CLAYTON BLACKMORE
The versatile Welshman proved to be the player from the Oxford line-up who outlasted all his team-mates, remaining at United for another eight years and helping the club collect several trophies including the inaugural Premier League title in 1992/93. He joined Bryan Robson at Middlesbrough in 1994.

REMI MOSES
The combative midfielder signed by Ron Atkinson in 1981 was in and mostly out of the team after Sir Alex's arrival due to persistent injury problems. He was sadly forced to retire prematurely, when aged only 27, in May 1988.

PETER BARNES
Some fans of the 1970s Manchester City legend may not realise he played a bit part in United's history as a member of Sir Alex Ferguson's first team. The winger made his 25th and final appearance for the Reds three weeks later, in a loss at Wimbledon, and rejoined the Blues in January for a short second spell.

FRANK STAPLETON
The Republic of Ireland international only missed eight of United's 42 league matches in 1986/87 but the striker was increasingly used as a substitute after Sir Alex replaced Ron Atkinson in early November. He was allowed to leave in July 1987 and he tried his luck unsuccessfully overseas with Ajax in Holland.

PETER DAVENPORT
The boyhood United fan finished 1986/87 with a respectable 16 strikes, including the winner against Liverpool at Old Trafford in April. However, Davenport's goals dried up in the next season and he moved to Middlesbrough in November 1988, six months after Sir Alex brought Mark Hughes back to the club.

JESPER OLSEN (SUBSTITUTE)
The Danish winger sat alongside the new boss in the cramped away-team dugout at Oxford and although he eventually went on as a substitute, he couldn't help the Reds avoid defeat. He stayed at United for two years under Sir Alex before leaving English football for good, beginning with a move to Bordeaux.
