Default Re: Man United U-18 Matches 2015/16

Manchester United's Under 18s lose 11th straight game - the root and branch overhaul Ed Woodward ordered is urgent

* Manchester United Under 18s were beaten 2-0 Manchester City
* It is United's 11th straight defeat and the gap between the rivals is growing
* Ed Woodward has ordered an overhaul of United's youth system

The cracks in Manchester United’s famed academy were apparent again on Wednesday as the Under 18s suffered their 11th league defeat in a row.

The fact that it came at the hands of neighbours Manchester City only served to highlight once more the increasing gap between the youth systems of these two rivals.

The ‘root and branch’ overhaul of United’s academy ordered by Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward cannot come soon enough for a club that once prided itself on youth development.

Manchester United's Under 18s lost its 11th league match in a row against Manchester City on Wednesday

It’s not only the Under-18s who are under-achieving, even though their current slump has caused alarm around Carrington. The 2-0 defeat to City followed a 5-1 FA Youth Cup thrashing at the hands of Chelsea.

Paul McGuinness’s side were handicapped by the early sending-off of defender Charlie Scott, but City could have won far more emphatically.

The shift in power has been evident in other age-groups for some time too. Only last September, United’s Under-14s were hammered 9-0 by their neighbours.

The last bastion of Old Trafford supremacy is the Under-21s, led by Warren Joyce. The 51-year-old has been in sole charge since December 2010 when co-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left to take over at Molde in Norway, and has won the Under-21Premier League title in two of the last three seasons.

Just as importantly for United fans stupefied by the football being served up by Louis van Gaal’s first-team, Joyce has got the reserves playing the kind of attacking football that has been so sorely missed at Old Trafford this season.

The Under-21s have hit 20 goals in winning their last six games against Sunderland, Southampton, Reading, Tottenham, Leicester and Liverpool since suffering their only defeat of the season at Norwich in November.

United are in second place in the table, three points behind leaders Sunderland, but have three games in hand and are favourites to retain their title. The only other club with a realistic chance of stopping them are City, with the two clubs due to meet home and away in February.

Joyce has been responsible for maintaining a steady flow of young talent during his eight years at United, including current first-teamers Jesse Lingard, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Paddy McNair. It has not gone unnoticed by the club’s hierarchy, and the former Hull City and Royal Antwerp boss can be assured of a place in the new set-up.

Nicky Butt will head up the academy once he signs a new contract but almost every other position is open to change, from head of recruitment Derek Langley to age-group coaches like McGuinness.

Almost every position is open to change, including that of Under 18s manager McGuinness

United will also consider appointing a director of football strategy whose role would be to forge closer links between the senior squad and academy.

Oxford United manager Michael Appleton has been linked with a return to the club where he started his career, potentially in a role working with the Under-21s, but United know they cannot alienate Joyce.

As Woodward tries to make up lost ground on City, he will need all the good help he can get.
