On the Bench ... With Ravel Morrison, Man United's Latest Hot Prospect

24/11/2010 6:35 AM GMT By Neil Johnston

There are numerous Manchester United players who enjoy 15 minutes of fame at Old Trafford before leaving never to be heard of again.

But Ravel Morrison is hoping his 30 seconds in the spotlight is just the start of a blossoming career that will eventually establish him as a household name.

Morrison did not know whether to laugh or cry when he made his debut for holders United during the recent Carling Cup tie with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Sir Alex Ferguson rewarded the 17-year-old attacking midfielder for a string of eye-catching performances in the reserves by handing Morrison his debut as a substitute in the fourth round tie at Old Trafford.

The trouble for Morrison was that there was just half a minute of injury time remaining, and his all-too-brief first-team experience ended without him touching the ball.

Yet it has left the Manchester-born talent, who has been likened to Everton's Jack Rodwell and Arsenal's Jack Wilshere, wanting more.

And judging by his rapidly expanding fan club, which includes Wes Brown, Morrison appears to have a terrific career ahead of him as long as he continues to work hard.

"Ravel's a great player," enthused United defender Brown after the 3-2 win over Wolves. "He's been training with us, on and off, since the start of the season.

"I think the gaffer really likes him, he's very talented and he'll obviously be delighted to have come on, even if it was for just a couple of minutes and he didn't touch the ball.

"He's a good lad and hopefully he can keep on progressing."

A powerful young footballer who can also play on the left wing and off the main striker, young Morrison shot to prominence as a schoolboy two years ago and scored in United's FA Youth Cup defeat to Chelsea in November 2008.

He signed professional forms with United on his 17th birthday and, after comfortably making the step up to the reserves, he was rewarded with a senior squad number (49) in October.

Ferguson has supplied England with a string of players in the past and there are many who believe that Morrison is a potential gem for the 2014 World Cup.

Some of the 40,000-odd United fans present inside Old Trafford for the Wolves tie expressed disappointment that Ferguson did not give Morrison a longer run out.

Every second counts, yet 30 seconds is no time to make a judgement.

But make no mistake, United fans will get see much more of Morrison in the future.
