Default Re: Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson 'could be loaned out in January in the hope of ousting Jordan Pickford as England No 1' as Manchester United block Sergio Romero from leaving as a back-up

* Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson could be loaned out in January
* David de Gea has nailed down the No.1 spot under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Henderson is hoping for a place in the England team at the Euros next summer
* But he will need regular football to be considered by manager Gareth Southgate
* United blocked Sergio Romero from leaving as they weigh up Henderson's future

Manchester United could allow goalkeeper Dean Henderson to leave on loan in January as he bids for the England No.1 jersey, reports claim.

David de Gea has kept his place as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first choice man between the sticks, leaving Henderson to contend with a role on the bench despite excelling during a temporary switch at Sheffield United last season.

Henderson will be keen on staking a claim to be Gareth Southgate's pick at next summer's Euros over Jordan Pickford, but he will need regular football - which could force United to sanction a loan deal, according to ESPN.

Dean Henderson could be allowed to leave Man United on loan in January, reports claim. Sergio Romero also wants to leave but United will wait until Henderson's future is clearer

Fellow keeper Sergio Romero is also keen on leaving in January after being left out of Solskjaer's squads, but the club have blocked a move and will put any departure on ice until they have finalised a plan for Henderson, the report adds.

The veteran Argentine came close to a move to David Beckham's MLS franchise Inter Miami, but the deal fell through and was also left frustrated when a transfer to Everton failed to materialise.

The £100,000 a week keeper was upset with how he was treated by the club and is said to be training alone, but he could be forced to stay until the summer should Henderson depart - with Solskjaer keen to have more options, ESPN says.

Many fans and pundits had tipped Henderson to become No.1 goalkeeper for both Manchester United and England after catching the eye on loan at Bramall Lane last season. Chris Wilder's side would be the leading favourites to secure him once again after sinking to the foot of the Premier League table.

With no goalkeeper cementing their position as England's No.1, Henderson will be confident of claiming the place should he gain regular minutes - especially after criticism of Pickford for Everton this season.

The Toffees star has been Southgate's preferred choice and impressed at the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the Three Lions reached the semi-finals, but he has been guilty of some glaring mistakes and will face pressure for his position from both Henderson and Burnley's Nick Pope.

Henderson is hoping to challenge Jordan Pickford for the England No.1 spot at the Euros. But Henderson, who excelled on loan at Sheffield United last season, needs more minutes

Carlo Ancelotti opted to drop Pickford for their 2-1 loss at Newcastle, calling upon Robin Olsen instead, before recalling him for the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United.

But Southgate insisted he would stay as his first choice for the time being in the absence of a 'serious challenge' from his rivals.

'His performances have been excellent for us and so that has not been a difficult decision for me,' he said.

'We have some competition for places but I would have to say that there is nobody who I think is challenging seriously at the moment to push him out of that position.'
