Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United vs Crystal Palace

PREVIEW: UNITED V CRYSTAL PALACE

What's the team news? In his pre-match press conference on Friday, Jose Mourinho confirmed that injuries have ruled Michael Carrick and Phil Jones out of contention for Saturday's clash. However, the boss is hopeful that Antonio Valencia, who did not travel to Moscow in midweek, could be available. Mourinho provided no further update on Marouane Fellaini, and, of course, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Paul Pogba also remain on the sidelines as they continue their recoveries from injury. Palace have lost Christian Benteke, James Tomkins and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to injury, while Tim Fosu-Mensah is obviously ineligible as he is on loan from the Reds. A former United forward, Wilfried Zaha, is likely to still be sidelined for the Eagles, though powerful striker Freddie Ladapo is in contention to feature, according to Hodgson.

How are Palace doing? Well, as mentioned above, the Eagles haven't enjoyed a positive start to the 2017/18 campaign. Palace are yet to score in the Premier League and remain rooted to the foot of the table, already four points adrift from safety. After defeats against Liverpool, Burnley and Manchester City on the road, they will be hoping for a change in fortunes at Old Trafford this weekend as they cross the city having been thrashed 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday. One positive for Palace has been the form of Fosu-Mensah, who has caught the eye with some impressive performances at the back.

What happened in our last meeting? Our most recent clash with Crystal Palace was a memorable one, particularly for the club's Academy. United welcomed the Eagles to Manchester on the final day of the league season in May, with Mourinho naming our youngest side in Premier League history for the match, including debutants Demi Mitchell and Josh Harrop. Current Preston midfielder Harrop marked his senior bow with a superb goal, and Angel Gomes came off the bench, as the Reds ran out 2-0 winners on an exciting day at Old Trafford.

Who is in charge of the Londoners now? Palace have a familiar face at the helm in Roy Hodgson, who is now managing his sixth English club after taking over from Frank De Boer earlier this month. The former England boss came up through the ranks at Selhurst Park as a player, and will undoubtedly relish the opportunity to steer the capital club to safety in the Premier League. At club level, he was previously in charge of West Brom, where he guided the Baggies to consecutive mid-table finishes.

Did you know? When replacing Wayne Rooney during last season's encounter, Gomes became the youngest player since Duncan Edwards to feature for the club. David Gaskell was younger when making his Reds debut in the Charity Shield in 1956, and Arthur Rowley younger still, at 15, although his wartime appearance does not count in United's official records. "Obviously, it's a dream come true," Gomes told MUTV after the game.

Who is the referee? Mike Dean will take charge of his first United match of the season on Saturday. The experienced whistler, from the Wirral, will oversee his fifth Premier League game of the campaign. He will be assisted by Simon Long and Matthew Wilkes, with Stuart Attwell on fourth official duties.
